1 Welcome to the 13th Conferment of Academic Degrees at the Faculty of Social Sciences! Thank you for registering to this spring's Conferment festivities. This letter will give you detailed information on the events and schedules of the Conferment as well as instructions on how to prepare for the festivities. The theme of the Conferment of Academic Degrees in 2011 is "Unlimited Society - Common Responsibility". Each day of the Conferment represent one part of the theme. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS On Schedules es The times that are given in the program are the times when the events begin. It is recommended to arrive to the locations of the events early, at least 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to begin. This gives you good time to prepare for the festivities and you will avoid traffic at the cloakroom. On the morning of the Conferment Act, the promovendi and their escorts must arrive already at Photography During the Conferment Act, photography is forbidden. There is a professional photographer taking pictures at the events, and these pictures will be published at the Conferment Publication, which all promovendi will receive. During the Conferment Ball, the promovendi can also have their pictures taken with their escorts. Other Things to Remember Please go through the dress code of each event carefully. Detailed dress code instructions have been sent to the promovendi. The dress codes of the friends and family who come to see the Conferment Act should also be checked from the instructions. Remember also that in most events, women cannot carry purses. Any questions you have during the events can be asked from the marshals. They can be identified by the student cap and a wide marshal's band. A small energy snack is recommended especially for the Conferment Act day. Children and the Conferment Conferment is a celebration meant for adults, and therefore it is not take children along to the festivities. However, children less than 1-year-old can be brought along to the Flora s day lunch and the Conferment sailing trip under the following conditions: a) no prams b) parents acknowledge that the facilities on board and at the lunch venue are limited

3 3 SCHEDULE FOR THE DANCE REHEARSALS The Conferment Ball will be held at the Old Student House on Saturday 4 June. During May, there will be dance rehearsals in preparation for the Ball. If you wish to join the rehearsals, now's the time to sign up for them! During the Ball, the Master's will dance a quadrille, and the Doctors will dance a polonaise. Rehearsals for the Masters' Quadrille 2 May 26 May every Monday and Thursday at 19:30 21 in the gym of Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3, downstairs from the lobby). General dance rehearsals 17 May at 18 20:30 at Alina-sali (New Studenthouse, 3rd floor, Mannerheimintie 5 B) and 1 June at 18 20:30 at the Hall of ESO and VSO (New Studenthouse, 4th floor, Mannerheimintie 5 B). The latter will be held in English, unless all participants are Finnish speakers. The dress rehearsal for the Ball will be held on 30 May, a day before the last general dance rehearsal, at The invited guests will rehearse their polonaise at To sign up for the quadrille rehearsals, please sign up by ing the address franseesi2011@gmail.com. State the name of the promovendi and the possible dance partner on 30 April at the latest. You can sign up even if you don't have a partner. The dance instructors will find a partner for you during the first rehearsal. You can only miss one rehearsal, and even then your partner must attend the rehearsal. The other dances are rehearsed during the quadrille rehearsal, so it in not necessary to participate in the general dance rehearsals. The polonaise for the Doctors and invited guests will be rehearsed during the dress rehearsals.

4 FLORA'S DAY theme: common The first event of the Conferment if Flora's Day on 13 May. In the morning, the Conferment Committee will hold a meeting in Latin, in which the Committee elects a Ceremonial Garland-weaver for the Conferment Ceremony. The General Garland-Weaver will arrive to Kumtähti field at c in a procession. The program at Kumtähti field (organised together with the Student Union of the University of Helsinki) will begin at and end c. 13:30. After this, the participants of the Conferment will leave towards Arcada as a procession. At the restaurant, a buffet lunch will be served. Schedule: 12:00 celebrations for the spring at Kumtähti field. Speeches, music performances and sparkling wine. 14:00 Celebratory lunch at Arcada. Buffet lunch, speeches, music performances. For women a jacket suit, dress or a combination outfit GARLAND-WEAVING AND SWORD-WHETTING WHETTING DAY theme: responsibility The garland-weaving and Sword-whetting day includes preparations for the Act day. The dinner will start off the Conferment celebrations. Garland-weaving at 14:00, the Unicafé at the University Main Building Master promovendi, garland-weavers At the Garland-weaving, the escorts of the Master Promovendi, or the Garland-weavers, will prepare the laurel wreaths for their Master escorts. In addition, there will be the speech of the Ultimus Master and some light snacks. The Garland-weavers should bring with them a normal-sized needle with a large eye, black or dark green thread and a thimble. The Conferment Committee has prepared the carcasses for the wreaths in advance based on the circumference of the Promovendi. These will be handed out to the Garland-weavers before the event begins. If the Promovendi has no escort, or two Promovendi are each other's escorts, the Conferment Committee will prepare the wreaths for the Promovendi.

5 5 Conferment Act Rehearsal at 14:30, the Great Hall of the University Main Building Honorary Doctors, Jubilee Masters and Doctors, Master and Doctor Promovendi The Master of Ceremonies, Professor Anne Haila will direct the Conferment Act rehearsal at the Great Hall of the University Main Building. The course of the whole Act will be covered. After the rehearsal there is a possibility for questions. Doctors should arrive at 15:00. Sword-whetting whetting at 16:00, Helsinki University Museum Arppeanum Honorary Doctors, Jubilee Doctors, Doctor Promovendi, Sword-whetters After their rehearsal, the Doctor Promovendi will proceed to the Sword-whetting, where the Swordwhetters help the Doctors to whet their swords. The Primus Doctor will hold his speech. During the evening, there will be speeches, music performances, and at the end, also dancing in the spirit of the 1961 Conferment Ceremony. After the previous events end, there will be bus transportation to the dinner from the Senate Square. Due to the schedule of the day, the dress code of the dinner applies to the day events as well. For men a dress coat and a white waistcoat. For women an evening gown, the main colour of which shouldn't be pure white or black. The Doctors will bring their swords and hats to the Act rehearsal. At the end of the day, the swords will be collected for the next day. The hat will also be left at the Main Building for safekeeping.

6 DAY OF THE CONFERMENT ACT: theme society During the Day of the Conferment Act, the Master and Doctor Promovendi are conferred by giving them the insignia of their degrees: for the Masters, a ring and a laurel wreath, and for the Doctors, a hat and a sword. Also the Jubilee Masters and Doctors as well as the Honorary Doctors will be conferred during the Act. Conferment Act at 10:00, the Great Hall at the University Main Building In addition to the escort, a Promovendi can have two guests at the Act. Please regidter the names of the guests bu 8 May with this electronic form: For friends and family, the dress code is dark suit for men and black or dark long dress for women. Photography in the Act is forbidden. The Master Promovendi and their Garland-weavers arrive to the Act as a procession, whereas the Sword-whetters will already be seated. All Promovendi should have a sturdy breakfast, because during the Act, one must stand still for long periods of time. The Promovendi and their escorts should arrive at 9.00 lates. The doors to the Great Hall close at 9.45, so friends and family should arrive before this. The Conferment Act ends at c :30 The Master and Doctor Promovendi and the Garland-weavers go to the locations specified during the Act rehearsal and form the processions. The Promovendi and their escorts should arrive at 9.00 lates 10:00 The Conferment Act begins, the processions enter the Great Hall. The last people to leave the Great Hall are the guests as well as friends and family. By the church steps, the procession will divide into two, the participants of the church service and the participants of the nonreligious service. From the services, the participants will walk back to the University Main Building in processions. There will be umbrellas in case of rain.

7 7 Laying of Wreath at 16:00, Hietaniemi cemetary Gathering by the New Chapel of Hietaniemi, the participants will move as a procession to the memorial of the deceased war heroes as well. Participation is voluntary, and there is no separate transportation to the event. Conferment Dinner at 19:00 (doors open 18:30),, Restaurant Bank During the dinner there will be speeches as well as the first performance of the Conferment poem. Women can participate in the dinner in the outfit they wear in the Act. Women; Masters and Garland-weavers Pure white, full-lenght evening gown that is not décolleté and has long sleeves. White gloves and white shoes. Bring with you a small safety pin or suit pin that can be used to attach the laurel wreath to the front of the gown before the Act. The Master's ring or any other golden ring will be worn on top of the gloves on the left index finger. The wreath will be worn during the dinner. Women; Doctors s and a Sword-whetters whetters Black, full-lenght evening gown that is not décolleté and has long sleeves. Black gloves and black shoes. Female Doctors need to be able to attach the sword to their waist for example with the help of a belt or a button. Young Doctors wear their hats during the dinner and carry their swords with them. Men; Masters and Garland-weavers During the Act, a dress coat, black waistcoat, white gloves and black shoes. For the dinner, the waistcoat must be changed into a white one. Bring with you a small safety pin or suit pin that can be used to attach the laurel wreath to the front of the dress coat before the Act. The Master's ring or any other golden ring will be worn on top of the gloves on the left index finger. The wreath will be worn during the dinner. Men; Doctors and Sword-whetters whetters During the Act, a dress coat, black waistcoat, white gloves and black shoes. For the dinner, the waistcoat must be changed into a white one. Young Doctors wear their hats during the dinner and carry their swords with them SAILING TRIP AND CONFERMENT BALL theme: unlimited Conferment sailing at 9:00 The sailing trip is the most informal of all the festivities. The boarding starts at Please be at Halkolaituri on time, because the first vessel will leave at Sparkling wine and a small, nautical breakfast will be served on board. Sea sickess is rare on the traditional sailing vessels. After the sailing lunch will be served in a nearby island restaurant. There is a short walk from the vessels to the restaurant. The return trip will be around 14.30, and we will arrive to Kauppatori at Conferment Ball at 18:00 For the Conferment Bal, the Old Studenthouse opens at The Photography point opens at 18.00, and the programme begins at During the event, there will be dancing, a buffet dinner and speeches. The celebrations will go on until the nocturnal procession begins. During the evening there is a chargeable possibility to get your photograph taken by Ylioppilaskamerat ry (Student Cameras) starting at The ball ends at 1.00, and at 1.30 the nocturnal procession will leave from the Olf Studenthouse. There will be speeches by statues and lots of sparkling wine. The after party will take place at Nylands Nation. Women can have a purse at the ball, but it should not be carried during dancing.
