3 You have been assessed as being suitable to have your eye surgery performed as a day patient and we look forward to welcoming you to the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. Your eye surgery will be performed under topical anaesthetic eye drops. If a local anaesthetic is required, the doctor will have discussed this with you at your pre-assessment appointment. You should be able to return home on the same day. The hospital staff wish to make your experience in the hospital as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Please read the following information carefully. If you require District nurses to instil your eye drops after your surgery, please contact the outpatients department and ask to speak to the eye nurse. Tell her the date of your surgery and she will arrange the district nurse. If you take Warfarin you will need to get your blood tested two to three days before your surgery. Please phone the outpatients department and ask to speak to the eye nurse, if your blood result is fine, they will ask you to bring the result in your yellow book on the day of surgery. If the result is high the nurse will advice you what to do. Pre operative eye instructions 3

4 You should not stop your Warfarin unless adviced by the Consultant to do so. Before you come Please take all your usual medications at the prescribed time and have a light breakfast before you come to hospital. You do not need to fast. Please bring all your medications with you in their original container. Please remove all make-up and nail polish before you arrive. If hospital transport has not been arranged for you, please arrange for a responsible adult to escort you home. Under no circumstances should you drive yourself home. You will not need to undress to go to theatre. Please wear loose clean clothes (preferably something with front fastening). Please notify us if you have any symptoms (such as fever, rash, breathing difficulties or chest pain) before your procedure or if there have been any changes in your medical condition since pre-operative assessment. 4 Pre operative eye instructions

5 When to come You should arrive at the hospital at the time and date given on your letter. Where to come When you arrive at your scheduled appointment time, please proceed to the Hospital Reception where you will be directed to the eye suite. What to bring This information leaflet and the accompanying letter. All your current medications. An emergency contact number / adult escort. What not to bring Toiletries, dressing gown or slippers. Any valuables or jewellery (except wedding rings). Your car unless your escort is driving you home. Pre operative eye instructions 5

6 When you arrive at the eye suite The receptionist will ask you to complete a registration form and your escort will be given an approximate time to collect you. You will then be admitted by a nurse and possibly be seen by the surgeon, who may ask you to sign a consent form. The nurse will then begin to put eye drops in. This will make your pupil enlarge and allow the surgeon to perform surgery. This will take approximately 45 minutes. If you have a morning appointment, please be prepared to spend the whole morning at the hospital and likewise if your appointment is in the afternoon. After the procedure You will be given something to eat & drink and the nurse will re-check your blood pressure. Before you go home, you will be given a followup appointment and an information booklet. The nurse will give you eye drops which the surgeon will prescribe and give you any relevant instructions. When the nurse is satisfied that you are fit, she will let you go home. Please check with your Optician before driving. 6 Pre operative eye instructions
