1 High School + 13th Year Plan NAME: CAREER GOAL: PSSC PROGRAM: Household Startup Plan You are about to graduate from high school. You will now be entering the adult world and will become responsible for yourself and your significant others both financially and physically. One of the first steps toward those responsibilities is to understand something about the costs you will have as an independent adult. This assignment requires you to get information about the costs of living away from your parents in Step 1a and 1b and in Steps 2 and 3, to look at what you will be doing after you graduate from high school. In Step 4, you will continue to explore your Financial Fitness by completing work dealing with your future financial fitness. ASSIGNMENT COMPLETION: Step 1: Complete the Income & Household Setup Expenses questionnaire print and hand in to your instructor. Step 2: Complete Budgeting questionnaire print and hand in to your instructor. Step 3: Complete the Financial Fitness Quiz print and hand in to your instructor. Step 4: Complete the General Information section of the pathway sheet best describing what you will do after graduating from high school print and hand in to your instructor. This will be one of the following: Apprenticeships & Work Military Service Community-Technical college 4 year collegeuniversity Step 5: Complete the final section (the title varies based on the pathway) of the pathway sheet best describing what you will do after graduating from high school used in Step 4 print and hand in to your instructor.
2 STEP 1: Income & Household Setup Expenses Use your current job/salary to complete the rest of this plan. If you do not have a job, use minimum wage, $8.55/hr. (WA minimum wage), as your hourly pay. Assume you will be working 40 hours per week. Hourly rate of pay $ x 40 hours per week = $ per week x 52 weeks per year = $ dollars a year. This figure is your gross income, meaning the amount of money you earn before deductions for taxes, etc. To complete this plan, assume your net income (your take home) is 75% of your gross income. Did you know that a plumber who enters the trade after graduating from high school will attend at least two years of college before retiring and will earn the same life salary as a medical doctor when both are 55 years old? The plumber will be able to retire with nearly the same salary as he/she was earning before retirement and could retire at the age of 55. You have decided to attend a community or technical college as the next step of your plan toward your lifetime career goals. These schools are very focused on a liberal education similar to what you have experienced in the public school system or toward a specific career track such as training for a career in Culinary Arts. You may choose to use both components if you choose a community college. The instructors in these educational units are there because they enjoy teaching and typically prefer to work with a wide range of people. The classes are typically small, with only a few lecture classes that may have 50 students. The curriculum you choose may be for updating skills or preparing for entry in a Bachelor s or Master s program. You will typically find students in Running Start as young as 15 to senior citizens in their 80 s and 90 s. Anyone can enter at any time to take a single course or to take a full course culminating in an Associate s degree.
