1 Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., M.B.A. Office of the Surgeon General of the United States Tower Building Plaza Level 1, Room Wootton Parkway Rockville MD September 10, 2015 Dear Dr. Murthy, On behalf of the undersigned organizations and the millions of Americans we represent, we would like to applaud your recent release of Step it Up!, the Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities. The leadership you have shown by issuing this document is important in making sure every American has safe and accessible walking opportunities. As a group of multi-sector organizations that work to expand walking and walkable communities in America, we see first-hand the benefits to individuals, cities and businesses that come when safe, accessible, and convenient walkable places are made readily available. These benefits promote not only the physical health and well-being of every person, but create healthy and robust neighborhoods with improved infrastructure, booming economies and cleaner environments. We also see the significant health benefits that accrue when more people walk more often. This freedom of access to safe mobility, whether walking, wheelchair rolling or biking, is, unfortunately, not currently available to all. Walking is an ideal way to reduce the disparity gap regarding Americans who get enough physical activity for health, but that means we must make typically underserved communities more walkable. Those who rely heavily on walking as means to access services and goods, travel to work and school or enjoy time with family are most often those who do not have access to safe conditions. We understand the value of the Surgeon General s Call to Action to provide leadership, and motivation for governments, businesses and organizations to address the numerous barriers to safe, active mobility and promote the multiple health benefits of walking. We, the partners of the Every Body Walk! Collaborative, will be building on this Call to Action to continue to promote walking and creating safe, walkable places for everyone. This decisive and historic document continues the tradition of Surgeons General s Calls to Action to focus attention and resources on specific threats to the public s health. A nation that does not protect and promote walking as a viable transportation alternative is a
2 nation that is not adequately addressing the needs of its citizens. We commend your leadership on recognizing the importance of walking and walkable communities to the nation and look forward to working with you to make a walkable America for all a reality.
