1 UCSD Master of Advanced Studies in the Leadership of Healthcare Organizations The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in the Leadership of Healthcare Organizations is the first graduate degree of its kind within the University of California system that provides depth and focus on management for healthcare professionals with an emphasis on clinical process improvement. The (UCSD), confers the MAS degree and the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine in the UCSD School of Medicine is responsible for the academic management of the program. UCSD Extension administers the program and provides student advising and career consulting services. This new graduate program is designed to provide the advanced knowledge and skills essential for healthcare professionals to manage escalating challenges, to improve the outcomes and safety of the systems of care, and cope with the competitive business environment that characterizes today s healthcare field. Its goal is to prepare healthcare professionals to participate more effectively in the business decisions that affect the quality of patient care, not to convert clinicians into business executives. - Audiences Served The UCSD Master s Degree in the Leadership of Healthcare Organizations is designed for physicians, nurses, healthcare executives, allied health professionals, and medical students as they assume more active roles in healthcare leadership and management teams. It crosses all healthcare fields and healthcare-related clinical and administrative professions, including medicine, nursing, mental health, dentistry, pharmacy and other professions. The program offers a unique curriculum for experienced healthcare professionals who want to enhance their contribution to management decisions in their healthcare organizations, while in many cases maintaining their clinical schedules. - The Need Currently, training programs for physicians, nurses and other health professionals include little preparation for management roles in large healthcare organizations. Yet, in a 1999 survey of medical practitioners, 88% agreed that clinical professionals who hope to positively influence their work environment must understand the principles of business and leadership. Programs designed to fill this training gap, which are offered at business or public health schools across the country, have only minimal application to the clinician s ideal role within healthcare organizations. As medicine focuses on quality, error prevention and systems of care, the emerging leadership role involves integrating clinical and management skills. 2 UCSD Master of Advanced Studies in the Leadership of Heathcare Organizations - Curriculum With an underlying theme of clinical process improvement, the MAS program is designed to provide participants with the critical tools to ensure optimal quality and outcomes in today s healthcare setting. The innovative curriculum integrates a focus on critical healthcare issues with foundation business knowledge such as finance, law and technology as well as leadership topics including inspiring team performance and implementing organizational change. Each of the courses is designed or taught by academic faculty and clinical practitioners with attention to the subjects unique to the contributions of clinically oriented managers to the delivery of healthcare. Through a highly interactive, seminar-style classroom environment with peers and faculty, participants directly apply recently learned business knowledge and insights to current healthcare situations and challenges. A student may take both courses concurrently with the core courses in the MAS program or prior to being admitted to the degree program. The courses are open to the public as well as matriculated master s degree students. The courses are referred to as the Healthcare Executive Leadership Program, Modules I and II for non-mas degree students (see page 1). 10
3 -Course Format Coursework for the master s degree program can be completed in one, two or three years, depending upon a participant s time to devote to the program. Classes are typically held in the late afternoons, evenings or weekends to meet the demands of working professionals. All regularly scheduled classes are held on campus at the UCSD School of Medicine. Courses are offered in the fall, winter and spring quarters. - Fees The cost of the master s degree program is approximately $25,000. Program costs do not include books, parking and incidentals.
