Increase their knowledge of the effect climate change has on severe weather. 2. Improve their understanding of severe weather impacts on health. 3. Enhance their ability to identify valuable health resources in patient communities and engage in conversations with their patients to protect patients' health.

2 Nursing Contact Hours This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Documented attendance at the entire program and the return of the completed pre and post tests and evaluation will yield 3.0 contact hours. 4 Program Sessions Climate Change & Weather Projections: The New Landscape Speaker: Richard Johnson, Franklin Institute In this session, attendees will understand how climate and weather have been changing, from historical observations to future projections, specifically for this region. Participants will be better able to understand the dynamics of climate change and how climate affects weather and thus the ecology of where we live. Climate Change as a Public Health Crisis Speaker: Marilyn Howarth, MD, FACOEM, University of Pennsylvania In this session, attendees will understand how warmer weather will increase the threat to the health of both the healthy and those with existing health challenges and anticipate changes to health practices. The speaker will review locally anticipated illnesses and diseases and their exacerbation in the Greater Philadelphia area due to warmer climate, and the effects on vulnerable populations. Participants will gain knowledge on the roles of health professionals in anticipating these changes. Emergency Planning: Prepping for Weather Risks & Disasters Speaker: Emily Alloy, MPH, City of Philadelphia In this session, attendees will understand that with climate change, weather-related disasters will increase and we can minimize risks and impacts through preparation at the local level. This session will focus on community resilience and ways health professionals can contribute to community preparedness. Assessing & Accessing Vital Resources: Community Tools & Mapping Speaker: Teresa Méndez-Quigley, MSW, LSW, Physicians for Social Responsibility Participants will be invited to identify critical resources for people living and working in neighborhoods and communities and will see a demonstration on mapping these resources to ensure access to them during severe weather events. Creating Leadership: Nurses Roles in the Community Speaker: Erin Johnson, MPH, MSN, RN, Drexel University Attendees will review the various ways nurses interact with patients in and outside the hospital setting. Using the tools, resources and knowledge nurses have, this session will engage participants in a group exercise with report back to the larger group on how to discuss emergency preparedness with patients to ensure their health and resilience. 4

6 Speaker Bios Richard Johnson: Richard serves as the Senior Project Manager for NSF-funded Climate Change Education Program (CCEP) and the Climate & Urban Systems Partnership at the Franklin Institute. He has participated in the Garrison Institute s Climate, Mind and Behavior Symposium and has presented at the North American Association for Environmental Education s Climate Change and Environmental Education: Framing Perspectives workshop. Marilyn Howarth, MD, FACOEM: Dr. Howarth is the director of Community Outreach and Engagement Core at the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a physician with specialty training and 25 years of experience in occupational and environmental medicine. Emily Alloy, MPH: Emily serves as the Recovery Planning Coordinator for the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management. In this capacity, she is responsible for developing plans addressing evacuations, severe weather, and utility disruptions, and for the coordination of public assistance programs following federal disaster declarations. Teresa Méndez-Quigley, MSW, LSW: Since 2012, Teresa has planned, implemented and evaluated environmental health programs - fracking, climate change and pharmaceuticals in drinking water - as director of environmental health at Physicians for Social Responsibility. She mentors interns and volunteers and has recruited, trained and mobilized health professionals to serve as spokespersons as PSR Champions for Health. She also educates senior citizens on climate preparedness and extreme weather. Erin Johnson, MPH, MSN, RN: From 2004 to 2012, Erin has planned and executed over 200 programs and events on sustainability and the environment, including climate change and disaster preparedness. She has been a member of the PA State Nurses Association s Environmental Health Committee. Currently, Erin is a Clinical Professor at Drexel University in the College of Nursing & Health Professions where she is teaching community health to nursing students (co-op and seconddegree undergraduate students). Physicians for Social Responsibility-Philadelphia (PSR) is a public health nonprofit organization of socially concerned Physicians, Nurses, and other Health Professionals. PSR, along with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in The Climate & Urban Systems Partnership (CUSP) is a group of informal science educators, climate scientists, and learning scientists in four Northeast U.S. cities (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York City, and Washington, DC.), funded by the National Science Foundation to explore innovative ways to engage city residents in climate change issues. CUSP is housed at the Franklin Institute, a non-profit educational museum in Philadelphia. CUSP granted a mini-grant for this program to the Physicians for Social Responsibility Philadelphia and Drexel University College of Nursing & Health Professions.
