2 The City Newcastle is a fantastic city to live and study in - one that fully deserves its reputation as a great place for students. Newcastle had a long history as a grimy industrial powerhouse, but it has been transformed into one of the most lively and cosmopolitan cities in the country. It is the largest city between Leeds and Edinburgh, and serves as the regional capital for well over three million people. As a result Newcastle has a selection of first-class social, cultural, media and commercial services and facilities to offer. It's a place of swish shops, café-bars and energetic enterprise, but it hasn't forgotten its roots. Newcastle is exciting, friendly and vibrant, with great nightlife, sport and culture. Student Life The Union Society, which is the students' Union at Newcastle, is a hive of activity. It provides a social centre and great services for students. The Union represents the students to the University, NUS ( National Union of Students) and other outside bodies. All registered students are automatically members of the Union Society, and all revenues made from the commercial services in the Union, such as bars and catering, comes directly back to students through the welfare and support services offered. Sports Newcastle can rightly claim to be one of the Top 10 Universities for sport in the country, both in terms of performance and facilities. The Athletic Union and the Centre for physical Recreation and sport jointly promote an extensive programme of competitive and recreational and sporting activities ranging form rugby and netball to sub aqua and parachuting. Library The University Library service consists of three libraries - the main Robinson Library; tje Walton Library, which serves both the Medical and Dental Schools; and the Law Library. It's the first university Library to receive the government's Charter Mark in 1995 for the quality of its customer service, and this has been awarded again in 1998 and The Robinson Library is centrally located and provides excellent study facilities with seating for over 2000 people and 200 networked computers. The library is well stocked with over one million books, 5,500 periodical titles and an increasing number of electronic journals and books. The divisional librararies in Medicine and Law provide similar services. Computing Facilities Information Systems and Services (ISS) provides: Location ::: Over 1,300 PCs in more than 40 clusters, running Windows XP Internet services, including personal University addresses and web pages An extensive range of software An outstanding campus network with exceptionally good connections to the Internet (we are the primary regional site for the national academic JANET network) Laptop docking facilities and wireless LANs The framework and support for almost all IT activities at the University. Newcastle has excellent links with other major cities throughout the UK as well as abroad. ROAD - From Carlisle the A69, From the South the A1. Check with the AA for journey times and routes from your location. RAIL - Newcastle is on the GNER London to Edinburgh line, making London only two and a half hours away. AIR - The Airport is located a few miles North of the city and is easily accessible by road (A696) and train (metro link directly to heart of city.) Bus services and taxis also travel frequently between the city and the airport. WATER - Approximately seven miles to the East of the city is a ferry port. Overnight car ferry links to Germany, Holland and Norway.
