3 Bellerbys College London, Statement of Boarding Principles and Practice The College s aim is to enable every individual to make the most of their abilities and to fulfil their potential, and it is accepted that much of what is valuable in education takes place outside of the classroom. The college therefore aims to provide a very full educational experience in the context of full boarding, including homestay. Such a programme can often make great demands on the pupils and staff involved so the College is committed to the highest levels of pastoral care. The Management of Boarding The Director of Student Services is a member of The Senior Management Team and has overall responsibility for the welfare of pupils and reports directly to the Principal. The Director of Student Services is the Designated Senior Person for safeguarding and child protection in the College and all staff receive child protection training every three years. All new staff receive the required level of safeguarding training as part of their induction. The deputy to Senior Person is the Welfare Officer. All students in homestay or residence are able to discuss any issues with the Accommodation and Welfare team, or the Residential Supervisors. The College also provides an Independent Listener for any matters a student may wish to speak about to someone outside of the college. Details are available on notice boards and in welcome booklets. All students will receive an induction to the student residence by the Residential staff upon arrival in the Residence and a welcome booklet will be issued at induction at the start of each course. Students who have behaviour issues will be spoken with by the Residential staff in the first instance and this will be passed on to college staff if needed. The College Nurse will manage all areas of medical requirements in the College, with reference to the College Policies. Residential staff are on shift from until 09.00, seven days a week in each of the under 18 residences and are available during these hours. There is one Residential Supervisor for each under 18 year old Block. In addition to this, there are Residential staff who work from to and Weekend Supervisors who are available from to on Saturdays and Sundays. Reception is manned 24 hours a day and all students are able to speak directly with, or contact by telephone, the reception staff and speak with Security. 4 J,K and L Residences These are residential houses for 14 to 17 year olds. Each house is entered via a security door with access control. Male and female students are separated by floors. There are two flats on each floor and each flat contains six single bedrooms with individual en-suite facilities. All bedrooms have internet access. Whilst cooking is not permitted in the student bedrooms in J K and L residences there is one kitchenette with TV and seating area available for student use per floor which includes a fridge,, kettle, microwave and toaster. A lockable cupboard is allocated to each student to store their individual provisions. No additional cooking appliances may be used in under 18 residences. There is CCTV in the residences and Security Staff are available 24 hours a day. There is a launderette on site and students are given instruction on how to use the washing machines and dryers. Students who feel unwell at any time can speak to the on-site College Nurse, who visits rooms if the student is very unwell. Residential staff and the Welfare Officer can also give advice outside the Nurse s hours and will follow policies to ensure students are taken care of appropriately. Upon arrival for the first time in residence, the student will be greeted by Residential staff, or a member of the Security team. They will be welcomed to the school and shown to their bedroom. They will be issued with a key and an information pack. The Residential staff will orientate the student into the residence by showing them the facilities and explaining the relevant procedures. The Residential staff will ensure the student knows where to meet for the induction on the first day. G and H Residences These are residential houses for students aged 18 years and over. Twin rooms, single rooms and rooms suitable for wheel chair users are available with en-suite facilities and a small kitchen area. The kitchen area consists of a fridge with freezer section, two cooking rings and a microwave. Security staff patrol the corridors regularly, 24 hours a day. Male and female students are integrated on each floor. Students have use of an onsite launderette. Students who feel unwell can see the on-site College Nurse or outside the College Nurse's hours, students can speak to Security Staff who are all first aid trained and available 24 hours each day. Homestay Bellerbys College, London provides homestay accommodation for students over 16 years old. Twin and single rooms are available within a private home with a local family. Students have breakfast and evening meals provided by the homestay and have internet connection and laundry facilities. (Some homestays charge for use of internet facilities) Students share bathroom and kitchen facilities with the homestay. Upon arrival for the first time in a homestay the student will be given a front door key and shown their bedroom and the facilities by the homestay. 5 the student how to travel to the college and may accompany them on the first day. Students are encouraged to get involved with their homestay family life and experience British culture. As part of this students are expected to communicate regularly with their homestay. Homestays are visited annually by college staff and the host will have contact with the college regularly to report any issues. In the case of students under 18 years of age, the Welfare Officer has regular contact with the homestay and speaks to students reported to have any behavioural, welfare or pastoral issues. If the student becomes unwell during school hours they should see the College Nurse and if they are unwell at the weekend or evenings, the homestay will take the student to their GP or alternative out-of-hours services and/or hospital as appropriate. College Overview The College provides for students from various countries and cultures and for students with linguistic or specific learning needs. The College promotes all aspects of equal opportunity and diversity. The College's policy is to promote a healthy lifestyle and to give guidance on all aspects of personal and social development, including alcohol, tobacco, personal relationships and drugs. The College prides itself with the quality of food provided for boarders. There is always plenty of choice and provision is made for special dietary needs. Our cafeteria serves breakfast, lunch, evening meals and snacks, seven days a week. The College site is managed by Campus Living Villages. Students from Greenwich University and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance are also accommodated in the over -18 residence.. The cafeteria and the library have Wi-Fi internet connection. A high priority is placed on maintaining students' safety and the college has also provided additional protection for College buildings by the use of a card swipe system on the doors of the houses, CCTV cameras and constant monitoring and patrols by Security Personnel. Students are provided with a safe in which to keep their valued possessions. The College is committed to Child Protection and suspected cases of child abuse would be referred to the Social Services Division in accordance with the latest government guidance Safeguarding Children, Keeping Children Safe in Education, April Statement of Boarding Principles and
