3 Outline The aim of this project is to create four separate web based applications that will work on a web browser and be device agnostic. The choice of App will be made around the needs of students and staff, with this in mind we will do two for staff and two for students. The Apps will be centered around use in education and will be available for use 24/7 and will be tracked for use over a period of 6 months.this would then demonstrate if companies can deploy cloud based Apps to customers and staff regardless of the personal equipment they use ( iphone, Android, Windows, Apple Mac, mobile phone or Tablet ) After researching the flexibility and possible outcomes that could be achieved using virtual reality, it was decided that Web Apps would reach more people on more devices and have a far greater scope of use. With this in mind we wanted to reach any person on any type of device that was connected to the internet. We also looked in to the feasibility of using NFC (contactless communication to your phone or other device) to enable actions to be taken by mobile devices but have not proceeded due to the relatively low number of mobile or tablets that are fitted with this technology. Goals The aim is to discover if the Apps would be successfully used by staff and students of a wide age range inside and outside of college hours. We also want to discover if this added to people's productivity and overall user experience of cloud based applications. 3

4 Measure The Apps will be monitored on the Google Developer console. These results will be collated to form part of this report along with the final project statement. This project was developed initially for internal use this could be easily transferred to a place of work and its the concept that we are trying to develop. 10 Additional Information The web Apps were developed using Google Apps engine and HTML5. The hosting is completely free for educational and non profit organisations using Google domains. For further details click here.they can be placed in the Google chrome webstore for further distribution or for retail purposes. These Apps would require some modifications to be usable in other online App stores but could be distributed via or URL. Summary The web app development project has opened up a wide range of possibilities for the end user, with customisable and personalised ranges of apps available to staff and students. Unlike the Windows desktop versions (where they exist) these are also available outside the organisation and are available the vast majority of devices. Feedback on the apps within LCC has been extremely positive and has contributed to the rapid growth of the user base for Google Apps for Education. This kind of personalised interface was previously only available to students participating in the Chromebook project, but we now have a platform to deliver to all our students and staff. This model, based as it is on readily available and free technologies, is one that can be used in almost any organisation so is not limited to LCC. It would provide a low-cost way for SMEs to develop apps for their businesses which didn t depend on specific devices or technologies. 10
