About Founded in 1881, the university has grown to house 12 academic divisions: Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences; College of Business Administration; J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication; College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Health Sciences; College of Nursing; College of Professional Studies; Graduate School; Graduate School of Management; School of Dentistry; and Law School. As an institution committed to both teaching and research, Marquette offers undergraduate programs in 155 majors and minors, in addition to 60 master s and doctoral programs. Marquette is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which reaffirmed the university s accreditation in Marquette ranks 75th in the U.S. News & World Report 2014 edition of America's Best Colleges. Among its peers, Marquette is distinguished for its emphasis on connecting academic excellence and service to others, which is intrinsic to a Catholic, Jesuit education. In Marquette s 2013 senior survey, 87 percent of seniors said they participated in community service, devoting approximately 422,000 hours of their time each year. Marquette's commitment to connecting academic achievement and service to others has been recognized nationally in a variety of venues. In 2012 the Service Learning Program was named the Experiential Education Program of the Year by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE). Marquette also prides itself on maintaining a student retention rate eight percentage points higher than the national average for private, non-profit colleges and universities, with approximately 90 percent of students returning for their sophomore year. Marquette has a proud intercollegiate athletic tradition as a NCAA-Division I institution and competes in the Big East Conference. Marquette s strategic plan, Beyond Boundaries: Setting the Course for Marquette s Future, was developed through an inclusive process involving the entire Marquette community. It outlines the need for the Marquette community to embrace new and collaborative methods of teaching, learning, research and service so that students are prepared for lives as change agents and problem-solvers in a world of growing complexity. It also calls for a renewed commitment to helping all members of the community reach their unique potential intellectually, personally, and spiritually. Page 2 of 10

About President Michael R. Lovell, Ph.D. The next dean will have the opportunity to partner with an ambitious and enterprising new president. Immediately before assuming the Marquette presidency, President Lovell served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee from 2011 to As chancellor, he oversaw the UW Milwaukee Initiative the university s landmark $240 million capital construction and renovation program, including its 89-acre Innovation Campus in Wauwatosa; the expansion of its School of Freshwater Sciences; the first phase of the Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex; and the Northwest Quadrangle Redevelopment Plan. Also as chancellor, he helped establish the App Brewery and launch the Student Start-Up Challenge, leading to UWM being selected as one of only 12 institutions nationally for the prestigious National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance Pathways to Innovation Program. Additionally, he opened the Zilber School of Public Health s new academic and research facility and fostered a new sense of entrepreneurship and innovation on campus and in the greater Milwaukee community. At his inauguration this September, President Lovell stressed innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurship as he announced several initiatives that will likely set the tone for the future at Marquette. He discussed a multimillion-dollar Center for Advancement of the Humanities; a $5 million strategic innovation fund ; a seven-acre land purchase; and a planned presence at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Wauwatosa Innovation Campus. About the College of Business Administration Marquette s College of Business Administration is committed to educating socially responsible global leaders who will be the difference in their communities and organizations. Through innovative applied learning, research with relevance and impact, ethics and social responsibility, and global perspective, graduates are prepared to add value to their organizations from day one and excel in the competitive global environment. The college is organized into five academic departments: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing, and Management and an innovative International Business program. Marketing is the largest undergraduate major, followed by Finance and Accounting. The Graduate School of Management is part of COBA and is home to the MBA and Executive MBA, Master of Science degrees in Accounting, Applied Economics and Human Resources and several joint degree programs. The college has 69 fulltime faculty members; undergraduate students number over 1700, and there are over 500 graduate students. In recent years, COBA has had tremendous success recruiting new faculty. The next dean will have the opportunity to continue this trend with anticipated faculty retirements on the horizon. This contributes to a highly engaged and collegial atmosphere within COBA as new faculty bring ideas, energy, commitment, and research interests into an already highly engaged and productive community. COBA attracts high achieving students to interact with a world-class faculty in the classroom and apply their learnings in real life settings throughout their time at Marquette. Incoming freshmen have an average ACT composite of 26.7, far above the national average. In the academic year, of surveyed graduating seniors, nearly 87 percent reported participating in one or more internships during their time at COBA. Of note, the Business Administration Alumni Association organizes a one of a kind mentoring program partnering high level mentors in the business community with juniors for career and professional development.(see Appendix I for more information.) Six months after graduation, 90.3 percent of 2013 graduates reported employment, graduate school, military service, starting their own business, or not seeking employment, with 96.4 percent of this group reporting that their post graduate pursuit was related to their major. Page 3 of 10

A few years ago, COBA celebrated its 100 th anniversary and a century marked by change, innovation and growth. The college has maintained its accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, AACSB International, since 1928 when it became one of the first 15 business schools in the U.S. and the first business school at a Catholic institution to be accredited. The accounting program has been accredited since 1991 and one of only two accredited programs in the state of Wisconsin. Accounting majors are consistently in the top 25 in the country on the CPA exam for first-time test takers with three Elijah Watt Sells awards winners in the past seven years. Graduates of the Applied Investment Management program (AIM) typically have a pass rate on the CFA Level I exam of approximately 70 percent, nearly double the global average. U.S. News & World Report typically ranks three of COBA s undergraduate programs entrepreneurship, finance and supply chain management in the top 20 nationally. They also have ranked the Graduate School of Management s executive MBA program in the top 20 nationally and the part-time MBA program in the top 50 nationally. Members of COBA s worldclass faculty have been honored with six best article awards from major academic journals over the past 18 months. During its most recent AACSB accreditation in 2011, the College of Business Administration received commendations for the creation and utilization of its world class centers and applied learning programs. They include the Center for Real Estate, the Kohler Center for Entrepreneurship, the Center for Supply Chain Management, the Center for Global and Economic Studies, and the AIM program. (See Appendix I for more information.) The centers are student focused and bring the business community into partnership with the students and faculty. The AIM program was noted as one of the best in the country. The AIM program and the highly regarded Supply Chain Management Center are also recognized for their use of practicing professionals to provide expertise and leadership. The report also commented on the increase in class size as well as the need for additional resources and updated facilities. COBA will have its next accreditation review in 2016 and is already preparing for that visit. In 2013, the President s Commission on Business Education was charged with identifying and developing a plan to build upon the current strengths of the College of Business Administration to attain world-class distinction in graduate and undergraduate business education and research. The commission made recommendations to redesign the undergraduate curriculum to include a more integrated and experiential set of courses to prepare students for internships earlier in their academic careers. The commission also recommended strategic initiatives to establish a globally focused leadership program and career center; and to expand and enhance the excellent applied learning programs and centers. A facility statement was developed to highlight the need for a new building for COBA to provide a welcoming, student-centered, adaptable and sustainable professional work environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the larger Marquette community. In response to the commission s challenge, COBA faculty and staff, working in close coordination with the Dean s Council of Excellence and other alumni, have designed a vision called Day One. It is based on the principle that a Marquette Business education starts on Day One at and from that moment and in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition, COBA will teach business and build character in all students through three major initiatives: an innovative curriculum, a Center for Leadership and Career Development, and excellent applied programs. This transformative plan outlines the programs, people and place as well as the funding resources necessary to deliver a new type of business education. A business education steeped in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition and academic excellence ensures that every Marquette Business graduate is prepared to lead with expertise, character and self-awareness. The vision is that once these initiatives are implemented, Marquette Business will be regarded as one of the top 50 business schools in the nation. This plan has been met with great support and enthusiasm from alumni and the greater Milwaukee and Chicago business communities that are eager to reap the benefits. (See Appendix II for more information.) Page 4 of 10

In order to stay connected to the greater Milwaukee community as well as the larger international business world and to ensure that its programs continue to be excellent and relevant, COBA has both a Dean s Council of Excellence and a Business Leaders Forum. The Dean s Council consists of a prominent group of global business leaders who are committed to reaching out to their networks to help recruit the best students, expand internship and job opportunities, and raise funds to support COBA s ambitious goals. The forum, founded in 1999, provides a setting for nationally recognized business leaders to engage in discussions and interact with students, faculty, and local business leaders. The program enables Marquette to build practical knowledge into its rigorous business curriculum, exploring current trends, issues, and practices in business. Role of the James H. Keyes Dean of the College of Business Administration The James H. Keyes Dean of the College of Business Administration reports to the Provost and is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of COBA, which includes the Graduate School of Management. S/he will provide leadership and oversee the academics and operations of COBA including recruitment and development of faculty and staff, curriculum and program development, communications and marketing, and resource management. The dean oversees approximately 69 full-time faculty with 75 percent of those as tenured or tenure track over 35 part-time adjunct faculty, more than 20 staff members, and an operating budget of approximately $13M. Reporting to the dean are the chairs of the academic departments, Executive Associate Dean, Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Management, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs, Director of International Business Studies and Director of the Business Career Center. The dean is a member of the University Leadership Council, Provost s Deans Council, and works closely with the Dean s Council of Excellence and the Business Forum. The dean also plays an important external role through building strong connections in the broader Southeastern Wisconsin business and civic communities and creating and maintaining productive relationships with alumni, trustees, and donors to enhance visibility, raise money, and create opportunities for faculty and students. Key Opportunities and Challenges for the Dean of the College of Business Administration The next dean will fervently and strategically lead and support the college s outstanding programs; promote outstanding research, teaching, and service; represent the college effectively to internal and external stakeholders; collaborate with the deans of the other colleges and with administrative offices; and develop a robust approach to alumni relations and fundraising for the college. In this role, the dean will address key opportunities and challenges, which are presented in detail below: Realize the vision of the Day One plan The Day One plan outlines an ambitious agenda that will establish COBA as a destination for pioneering business education, a source of great leaders who are ready for both a career and life, and a top-ranked business school. The successful dean will embrace this vision for the College and further develop implementation plans to achieve it. The dean will work with faculty, staff, the administration and external constituents including donors, corporations, and alumni to secure the resources to execute the plan. The dean will lend his or her expertise in further refining the plan that includes curricular innovation, a career center and development of applied programs. The dean will also champion the Day One plan as a model for business school education to the external business community, AACSB, and the national community of business schools more broadly. Page 5 of 10

Build for the future through ambitious fundraising for facilities and other initiatives The capacity to increase revenue and raise funds is central to the COBA s vision of academic excellence, accreditation, implementation of Day One, and aspirations to be a highly visible business school. Fortunately, COBA and Marquette alumni are well placed in businesses in Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis, and across the country. Many of them are loyal alumni with a desire to give back to the university and COBA. The university is building an aggressive fundraising strategy working with the new President and the relatively new Vice President for Advancement. The next dean will need to establish him or herself as a major player in the fundraising efforts of the university and be able to articulate COBA s needs and how they advance the greater university plans. The dean will need to build and develop new relationships for the college as well as steward long-standing ones. As noted in the last AACSB accreditation report, upgraded facilities, most likely in the form of a new building, are critical to COBA s ability to provide the business education that students and employers demand. The dean will need to be able to articulate the need for facilities with the technology, infrastructure, and physical space to enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship; be a hub for creative partnerships with the business community; and serve as a showcase and destination for innovative business education. Extend the impact of COBA as a source of expertise and innovation for the business community Marquette and COBA hold a position of distinction in Milwaukee and the greater Wisconsin business community. Milwaukee serves as a hub for manufacturing, financial services, and healthcare in addition to housing a growing high-tech business community. Many COBA alumni are well-positioned within this community. Yet, when looking for answers to solve complex business problems or for partners to provide education to employees, it is not entirely clear that these businesses think about COBA first and foremost. The next dean has the opportunity to make sure they do. Building on the strength of the academic programs and on the college s world class centers of excellence, the dean will reposition COBA as a flagship for the university. The new dean will establish an effective network to link students and faculty with alumni and other key stakeholders in the business community and beyond. Through these relationships, the dean will create a mutual basis for support. On the one hand, community and corporate partners will benefit from the wealth of talent, research and teaching generated by the college. On the other hand, students and faculty will benefit from increased opportunities for applied research, learning, and career placement. Marquette s alumni are an essential element of this network, creating the bridge between the college and the larger business community. The successful candidate will tap into the important alumni base to connect with current students and ensure meaningful engagement for alumni to deepen their commitment and support of COBA. Foster academic excellence through the recruitment, development, support, and retention of exceptionally talented faculty The college has an accomplished and celebrated faculty known for scholarship in traditional and applied research and an innovative approach to teaching and learning. New hires in recent years have enhanced this community and added new depths and dimensions to it. The new dean must foster an environment that nurtures and supports this new talent and provides the resources to attract, recruit, and retain the next generation of innovative teacher-scholars. Recognizing the college s faculty as its greatest asset, the successful candidate will ensure a culture where each person is valued and recognized for his/her contributions and talents. The dean will tap into the energy and desire of the faculty to be more innovative and provide the moral and financial support for faculty retention, growth, and development. The dean will also ensure that workloads and class sizes continue to allow for excellence in both scholarship and Page 6 of 10

teaching for graduate and undergraduate business students as well as for students who want to minor in or take one or more courses from COBA s programs. Strengthen COBA s position as a leading source of innovation within Every dean must be an advocate for his or her own college. However, he or she is also a member of the broader university community. As the new President and Provost take the reins, the dean of COBA can be a valuable resource and model for change and innovation within the university more broadly. In particular, as the university seeks to create a new resource allocation plan, creates more inter-disciplinary programs that meet the demand of students and employers, and considers how to create more financial acumen in all undergraduate students, the dean can be a good partner and leader in how to best implement these initiatives. The dean will need to be an articulate and passionate spokesperson for COBA but also participate in the realization of the greater university goals. As a new resource allocation model is developed and there is greater transparency around how resources are developed and allocated, the dean must be able to understand and exploit the levers and position COBA to garner its fair share of those resources. Qualification and Characteristics The successful candidate will be an innovative and experienced leader with a high level of energy, vision, political savvy, drive, and an engaging personality necessary to implement an ambitious strategic plan and identify new goals for continued success. The university seeks a proven leader with a distinctive record of achievement. The successful candidate will also bring most, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, skills, experiences, and personal qualities: Administrative leadership, vision, innovation, and a record of increasing experience and responsibilities in an environment characterized by collegial management, mentorship, inclusive decision making, and effective communication skills; Commitment to the ideals and values inherent in Catholic, Jesuit education and an ability and willingness to be an advocate for them; For academic applicants, an established record of superior university teaching, scholarship, and distinguished university, professional, and community/public service sufficient to merit appointment as full professor with tenure; Capacity and demonstrated ability to fundraise in context of annual, capital, and comprehensive campaigns; Financial acumen and the ability to understand and act upon complex financial models and budgets; Ability to create and nurture a supportive environment that utilizes inclusive and transparent processes to foster intellectual vitality, creativity, student learning, and outstanding teaching, research, and service; A demonstrated commitment to and record of serving students emotional and academic needs and active participation in student activities and events that encourage social, professional, and intellectual growth and development; Commitment to affirmative action, diversity and inclusion in all of its forms; experience in supporting, promoting, and implementing the learning opportunities offered by a diverse community; Ability to establish a visible presence and to represent the COBA nationally in the greater business, nonprofit, and governmental communities and among stakeholders, alumni, and the general public; Page 7 of 10

Location Understanding of the changing market and the initiative to explore its implications for the structure of business education broadly; Ability to recruit and work with an engaged and active advisory board, alumni and donors; Ability to work effectively with the university constituents, including university leadership, deans, faculty and staff. 9 Appendix 1: COBA Centers and Programs The Center for Global and Economic Studies provides a focal point for addressing the increasing importance of global economic issues. It promotes understanding of global economic issues in the academic and business communities, especially at and in the southeast Wisconsin region. The Applied Global Business Learning program provides students with opportunities to apply their business skills in real-world settings in developing countries. The Center sponsors numerous activities at Marquette to expand awareness of global economic concerns. Events include the Distinguished Speaker Series in Economic Issues, the Marburg Memorial Lecture, public presentations on contemporary economic issues. The Kohler Center fosters new ventures, encourages innovation, and promotes entrepreneurship at. The Kohler Center for Entrepreneurship, established in 2001, has served business students and university students well with annual events such as the Business Plan Competition and entrepreneurship programs and classes designed for business students. The Golden Angels Network, led by the Director of the Kohler Center, was formed at in early 2003 to invest in new companies, primarily in Wisconsin and Illinois. Entrepreneurship at encompasses an undergraduate major and minor in the College of Business Administration, a program in social entrepreneurship, a graduate certificate in entrepreneurship, classes in the MBA and EMBA programs, student project experiences both locally and globally, and close ties to a strong network of alumni and Milwaukee-area startup experts who provide their experience and mentorship. The AIM program was the first undergraduate business program selected as a Program Partner by the CFA Institute. The partnership designation means that offers a degree program that covers at least 70 percent of the CFA Institute s Program Candidate Body of Knowledge, the CFA Institute Ethical and Professional Standards, and other requirements. The COBA and the Business Administration Alumni Association co-sponsor a unique Mentor Program. The Mentor Program started over 10 years ago and is offered to juniors with more than a third of the class choosing to participate. Mentors, typically alumni, are executives or senior managers in their corporations. Each mentor is matched with a student majoring in his or her area of expertise. They pair meets monthly to focus on professional and career development. More than 76 local and global corporations participate annually; most of the mentors return every year. The program has been so successful that alumni who were in the first years of the program as students have returned as executive mentors. Page 9 of 10

Appendix II: COBA Day One Plan A Marquette Business education starts on Day One. From that moment and in our Catholic, Jesuit tradition, we will teach business and build character in all students through three major initiatives: an innovative curriculum, a Center for Leadership and Career Development, and excellent applied programs. Our transformative plan outlines the programs, people and place as well as the funding resources necessary to deliver a new type of business education. A business education steeped in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition and academic excellence ensures that every Marquette Business graduate is prepared to lead with expertise, character and self-awareness. To that end, Marquette Business will be regarded as one of the top 50 business schools in the nation. Programmatic Initiatives: Innovative Curriculum A redesigned undergraduate curriculum highlighted by a first-year integrated experience that includes a foundational course on how businesses make money and provide value. With students exploring how business operates from Day One, they will already be prepared to take major courses and be internshipready as sophomores, giving them a decided advantage over their peers at other institutions, where students often aren t even admitted to business school until sophomore or junior year. This curriculum culminates with a capstone course in strategic management, where seniors are able to fully realize and apply their business expertise. Center for Leadership and Career Development Visible, active and groundbreaking in its mission, this integrated center will be the hallmark of a new Marquette College of Business. Led by an assistant dean and guided by non-tenured faculty from industry and executives-in-residence, the center will marry traditional career services with a required, globally focused leadership program around character and self-awareness that will from Day One permeate every Marquette Business student s experience, preparing them to be insightful and engaged leaders grounded in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition. Excellent Applied Programs Capitalizing on the success of the college s world-class applied programs, namely the Applied Investment Management program and the Center for Supply Chain Management, the college will codevelop with industry four new programs, such as Manufacturing Management, Private Equity, IT- Finance and Sales Management. Additionally, we will bolster existing programs, including AIM and Supply Chain, as well as the Center for Real Estate, Kohler Center for Entrepreneurship, and Center for Global and Economic Studies.
