3 Introduction What is? References stands for Integrated Services Digital Network, which provides end-to-end digital connectivity between computers over telephone lines. Unlike the analog method used by the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), sends and receives data digitally, similar to how a bus in a personal computer operates. The benefits of using lines are: fast connection times between computers a very fast communications rate (as high as 128,000 bps) Note: Metasys supports a communications rate of up to 57,600 bps. lower transmission error rate (almost zero) lines carry data and/or voice at the same time. They are ordered with a specific number of B channels along with a D channel. The Basic Rate Interface (BRI) specification consists of two B channels and one D channel, hence the term 2B + D. Each B channel has a bandwidth of 64K bps, and the D channel provides out-of-band signaling and allows 16K bps for packet switched data only. Metasys can also use 1B + D. (Refer to Figure 1 for examples.) phone lines require compatible modems or terminal adapters. These modems, one required at each side of the dial-up connection, perform the necessary signal conversions. ADTRAN offers a modem that works with lines called the ISU Express. Note: lines are not available everywhere and costs will vary, often dramatically. Once becomes more popular, availability will increase and costs will decrease. To find out if lines are available in your area, contact your local telephone service provider. Their number is most often found in front of the city white pages. Some of the technical information on was obtained from the following resource: ADTRAN ISU Express 128 kbps User Manual. App. Notes: Network Communications Phone Lines with Metasys 3

4 Support for Metasys Metasys at Release 8.0 or above supports OWS dial-up in addition to the conventional phone line support that currently exists. This capability is provided by the Dial-up I/O feature to allow the Metasys Operator Workstation to communicate with Network Control Modules (s) via phone lines. One improvement is the connection time, which is five seconds or less. The actual connect time depends on the number of nodes defined on the network and the type of dial-up Operator Workstation being used. Note: is supported on the 200 and the 300 Series. The 101, 102, and 401 do not support. In order for lines to work with Metasys, you need an modem and various phone wires. The modem provides an RS-232 interface and supports the standard AT command set. Each of these components is outlined under Hardware Requirements. The only modem that Metasys supports is the ADTRAN ISU Express. It supports AT&T 5ESS, Northern Telecom DMS-100, and National -1 central office switches. If your service provider uses any of these standards, the application should work for your job. The ISU Express can provide a data transfer rate as high as 128,000 bps; however, the RS-232 ports on the Operator Workstation and the can only support up to 19,200 bps unless you are using an 300 Series and you are connected to Port 5 or Port 6. If you are using a 300 Series and you are connected to Port 5 or Port 6 with lines, you can communicate with a baud rate up to 57,600. Note: The serial card in Port 5 or Port 6 must be a 16 character FIFO (First-In, First-Out) serial card. The serial card will use a 16550AF UART or equivalent. An example of a 16550AF serial card is the BOCA I/O AT55. The two B channels on an line can use three different data call types: Circuit Switched Voice (CSV), Circuit Switched Data (CSD), or Packet Switched Data (PSD). With Metasys, you must use only CSV and CSD. PSD is not supported. Data calls to the system adapter are routed to the RS-232 port. Voice calls to the modem are routed to the built-in RJ-11 phone jack. Note: communication can occur between the Operator Workstation and an. is not supported for a dial-up Operator Terminal, Network Terminal Emulator, remote printer from the, or remote N2 Bus. 4 App. Notes: Network Communications Phone Lines with Metasys

5 Application Details Configuration Examples Figure 1 shows three different configurations: conventional POTS, only, and POTS with. Metasys can support all of these configurations. Example of POTS Configuration: OWS POTS Phone Service POTS POTS Example of Configuration: OWS * 1B+D Phone Service 1B+D * 1B+D * Example of POTS/ Configuration: OWS * 2B+D Phone Service 1B+D * POTS OWS - Operator Workstation POTS - Plain Old Telephone Service - Integrated Services Digital Network * Use ADTRAN ISU Express Figure 1: Configurations Supported by Metasys App. Notes: Network Communications Phone Lines with Metasys 5
