3 OVERVIEW Overview Telecommunications has become an integral part of every growing business. It is now performing in more and more ways as companies and people increasingly connect and share information. And depending on their needs, businesses choose between two technologies as their telephony backbone the long established traditional phone system (Plain Old Telephone System, or POTS) or the modern VOIP phone system (Voice over Internet Protocol). Traditional Phones or POTS rely on circuits switched by PBX (Private Branch Exchange) equipment and phone lines connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). VOIP Phone Systems bypasses the traditional phone lines transmitting and receiving voice over the Internet. It converts voice into data packets and allows phone calls to be made through an Internet Protocol (IP) on a standard broadband connection. It can also access the PSTN network for phone calls to land lines, just as a POTS would. Depending on their priorities, VOIP customers then have two routes to take: 1. To purchase and install an IP PBX system themselves or have a Value Added Reseller (VAR) install it for them. These are commonly known as Self -Managed or On-Premise Phone systems. 2. To sign up for a cloud based Communication as a Service (CaaS) where the provider offers full voice infrastructure on their data network. 4 CAPITAL COST SAVINGS Unlike on-premise IP PBX systems, CaaS systems do not require hardware or software maintenance contracts, or an IT team to monitor the system. For a low monthly fee the hosted provider will take all responsibilities for the company s phone management needs. Large organizations have been using VOIP for many years.
