1 Butler University Named Annual Scholarships
2 Named Annual Scholarships The following named scholarships are supported by annual gifts from donors who have consistently supported the academic endeavors of Butler students; some have provided scholarship support for as long as 50 years. Albertsons/Osco Scholars Award Recipients of the Albertsons/Osco Scholars award are selected jointly by the dean or academic affairs committee from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid and a representative from Albertsons/Osco. Recipients are to be entering P1 or P2 students in COPHS in good standing with the University who are willing to work at Albertsons/Osco during the summer of their entering P1 or P2 year. Carl S. Allegretti Scholarship Fund Established in 1996, this scholarship is awarded to an accounting major with preference given to student-athletes. Carl, a 1983 graduate of Butler s College of Business Administration, serves on the CBA Board of Visitors. His father Joe Allegretti has also established an annual scholarship. Joseph N. Allegretti Scholarships These scholarships were established by Joseph N. Allegretti, class of 1959, to be awarded in both the College of Business Administration and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The CBA scholarship is awarded to a junior accounting major from Lake or Porter County, Indiana. The pharmacy scholarship is awarded to a fourth-year pharmacy student who is a resident of Lake or Porter County, Indiana.
3 D.J. Angus Scientech Educational Foundation This scholarship is for a pharmacy and/or science student in his or her sophomore or junior year and is intended to serve both as an award and as an impetus for continued excellence. The recipient shall have shown the greatest improvement in grade average from one year/semester to the next, and the student shall have displayed a good citizenship record. Francis A. Britt, Sr. Memorial Scholarship This scholarship, established in the 1960s, is given to two students from the Evansville area (Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick, Spencer, Gibson or Davies counties). Originally known as the Southwestern Indiana Pharmaceutical Association Award, the name was changed in 1981 to the Francis A Britt, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor the 1916 graduate of the Indiana College of Pharmacy (now Butler s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences). The Butler Way This scholarship honors the Butler University men s basketball team and coaching staff, acknowledging their tremendous skill and teamwork in advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2003 NCAA competition. It further honors the legions of fans who taught millions of people that The Butler Way is defined by skill, integrity and determination. CVS Charitable Trust Scholarship This scholarship, presented by the CVS Charitable Trust, is for students who are in good academic standing and are interested in a career in community pharmacy practice. Recipients should be selected regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or national origin. Jonathan & Kathryn Evans Award This is a merit award for students enrolled in the College of Business Administration who plan to enter the field of financial investments and have a minimum cumulative GPA of The Evanses are both graduates of Butler s College of Business, Jonathan in the class of 1992 and Kathryn, class of Jonathan serves on the Board of Visitors for CBA. Thomas W. Genrich Scholarship A 1978 alumnus of Butler s College of Business Administration and longtime donor, Thomas Genrich established this annual award to benefit business students enrolled full time in Butler s College of Business Administration. Genrich is a retired partner from PricewaterhouseCoopers.
4 Rosie Green Annual Scholarship Rosie Green, employed in Butler University s registration and records department, established this annual award to go to a student with a learning disability as identified through Butler University s Learning Resource Center. James E. Hughes Scholarship Dr. James E. Hughes received his college degree from Indiana University Medical School in 1906, and his internship followed at Indianapolis City (or General) Hospital. His wife Lora Mae (Bond) Hughes attended Butler from 1906 to This scholarship was created through a trust established in 1926 by the estate of James E. Hughes and is for worthy men and women whose financial conditions might preclude a college education. Students should be from high schools in Indiana. Dr. Hughes died in 1949; Lora Mae, in Fred & Jane Hurt Annual Scholarship The Fred & Jane Hurt Annual Scholarships are given to two deserving students each year. Recipients are Butler students who are interested in marketing with preference given to those who show strong leadership ability and achievement and promise in marketing studies.
5 Rhoda Israelov Annual Scholarship Award Rhoda Israelov, an Indianapolis financial planner, provides the funding for this scholarship for a female finance major who is a senior in the College of Business Administration. Selection is based on merit, and the recipient must have a permanent address in Marion, Hendricks, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby, Hancock, Hamilton or Boone counties. Ms. Israelov is currently an executive in residence with Butler s College of Business Administration. Kiwanis/Lawrence E. East and Maysel D. East Scholarship Lawrence E. and Maysel D. East, longtime friends of Kiwanis, left a bequest to that organization and specified that scholarships should be granted to university students in Indiana. Through the generosity and continuing interest in Butler by the Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis, Butler was specifically designated as a university to receive the award (along with the University of Indianapolis). The scholarship is awarded, in memory of Lawrence E. East and Maysel D. East, to a student selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership and citizenship. McDonald Group/UBS Paine Webber Scholarship Established by Larry McDonald, a friend of Butler University, this scholarship is for an average student in the College of Business Administration. Lance E. Middlekauff Annual Fifth Year Senior Football Scholarship Established in 2000 by Butler alumnus Lance Middlekauff, class of 1962, this scholarship is for a past member of Butler s football team who is a fifthyear senior returning to complete his degree. The recipient, who must be in good academic standing, will be selected in accordance with normal procedures and guidelines by the football coach or members of the athletic staff consulting with the athletic director. Lance E. Middlekauff Annual Golf Scholarship Award Created in 1999 by Butler alumnus Lance E. Middlekauff, class of 1962, this scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the men s golf team who is in good academic standing. Recipients are selected by the men s golf coach or members of the athletic staff in consultation with the athletic director. NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Partners Scholarship Established in 1977 by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, this scholarship is awarded to a pharmacy student in his or her third or fourth professional year who has expressed an interest in community pharmacy.
6 Amos Nordman Foundation Charitable Trust Scholarship Amos Nordman attended Butler from 1923 to 1925 and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He then moved to Michigan, where he combined insurance and real estate into a successful business career. In 1975, through the Amos Nordman Foundation Charitable Trust, he created the Amos Nordman Scholarship at Butler to assist deserving male students with a high academic standing who are in need of financial assistance. Presser Foundation Scholarship This prestigious award is given solely on the basis of merit to an outstanding music major at or near the end of the student s junior year. The Presser Foundation Scholarship, awarded at Butler since the late 1950s, has been made possible by grants from the Presser Foundation, established by the late Theodore Presser of Pennsylvania. James W. Pyles Pharmacy Scholarship James W. Pyles, a 1961 pharmacy graduate of Butler, was vice president of his pharmacy class and received Butler s Alumni Achievement Award in This annual scholarship is given to a minority student (preferably African American) studying pharmacy who is in need of or deserving assistance. Norman P. Reeves Scholarship Norman Pennington Reeves graduated from Indianapolis College of Pharmacy in 1936 and received an honorary degree from Butler University in In 1982, the Hook Drug Foundation established this scholarship in honor of the former CEO of Hook Drugs, Inc. Eligible Butler students must have completed the two-year pre-pharmacy program. Furthermore, recipients should strive to uphold the principles of pharmacy as exemplified by Mr. Reeves: maintenance of the highest standards of quality, integrity, ethics and excellence of the pharmacy profession, service to the public and continuing community involvement.
7 Mary Frances Newhouse Roush Scholarship Mary Frances Newhouse Roush, born Jan. 19, 1916, received her bachelor of music degree from the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music in 1939 (where she was one of the top 10 students in her class) and her master of science degree at Butler in Mrs. Roush was elected to membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Sigma Nu and Phi Beta, for which she served as treasurer for many years. She also was active in local organizations such as Matinee Musicale, the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs and the Heart Disease Research Foundation. She taught in private and public elementary schools, spending most of her 18-year teaching career in the Indianapolis public school system. Mrs. Roush also was an active member in the Third Christian Church of Indianapolis and the Central United Methodist Church of South Bend; she shared her talents and love of music with both congregations, as well as other churches in her community. She performed with the Jordan Conservatory Orchestra as a student and for many years was an active member, along with her husband, of the Butler Symphony Orchestra. In 1976, Mrs. Roush received the Wilking Distinguished Music Award for her contributions to Indiana as a musician, pianist and educator. The Mary Frances Newhouse Roush Scholarship was established by Robert L. Roush in 1988 in memory of his wife. The scholarship is awarded annually to a violin student in the Jordan College of Fine Arts.
8 Dean Herbert F. Schwomeyer Scholarship Herbert F. Schwomeyer has had such extensive experience with Indiana high school basketball that he has been often referred to as a Hoosier hysteria historian. He published Hoosier Hysteria, a History of Indiana High School Basketball. Schwomeyer graduated from Indianapolis Manual High School and received a bachelor s and master s degree from Butler University and his doctorate from Indiana University. Schwomeyer played basketball himself at both Manual and Butler and coached at Carmel and Warren Central High Schools before joining the faculty at Butler in In his 38-year career at Butler, he served as a teacher, coach, admissions counselor, dean of men and director of athletic promotion. He worked as a basketball official for the Indiana High School Athletic Association for 12 years and was selected to officiate the State Finals in 1955 and For 21 years, from 1957 through 1977, Schwomeyer worked with Indianapolis TV station WRTV-6 during the month the Indiana state high school basketball tournament was in progress. WRTV televised the tournament from 1951 through In 1994, Schwomeyer was inducted into the Butler University Athletic Hall of Fame. The Dean Herbert F. Schwomeyer Scholarship was established by Dr. Stephen Hardin to honor Schwomeyer. The scholarship is presented annually to a deserving student-athlete. Hardin, of Martinsville, Ind. received his B.S. in chemistry from Butler in 1969 and has supported this scholarship every year since 1979.
9 Section 12 Athletics Annual Award The holders of Section 12, Row E in Hinkle Fieldhouse established this annual award to benefit a student-athlete. The recipient will be a full-time student who is a member of a Butler athletic team and who is in good academic standing with the University. Thomas & Cecilia Slusser Business Scholarship This annual award is for a deserving young man or woman enrolled in the College of Business Administration who shows an interest in bettering him or herself and who participates in activities that assist others. The donors ask that it go to a man or woman who has values, ethics and shows an interest in bettering themselves and does something for other people. Thomas and Cecilia Slusser established this fund in 1996, and their daughter, Laura Slusser Yurs, Butler class of 1998, also contributes to the scholarship. The Nick Smyrnis Annual Scholarship This scholarship was created in 1981 by the James Whitcomb Riley Chapter No. 232 of the Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) in honor of Nick Smyrnis, Butler University class of 1947, supreme president, Order of AHEPA, The Smyrnis Scholarship encourages the study of the humanities. UPS Scholarship This yearly scholarship, established by the UPS Foundation in 1999, is given to students based on need or merit. Recipients selected by Butler will be recognized in UPS company newsletter. John H. Wells Fund Mrs. Elizabeth Wells established this special fund in 2001 to assist the Office of Student Disability Services in supporting the language-based learning disabilities program. On a limited basis the fund provides a financial award to a current dyslexic Butler student or students with learning disabilities who need financial assistance. The fund provides direct support to such students through the following: additional staff support; purchase of materials, technology additions and upgrades for use by dyslexic Butler students; guest speakers; informational materials about dyslexia and learning disabilities; funding for conference expenses; and diagnostic evaluations of current students.
10 Woman s Department Club Music Merit Award This scholarship, supported by the Woman s Department Club of Indianapolis, honors the memory of that organization s founder, Mrs. Luella McWhirter. Scholarships are for students in the Jordan College of Fine Arts. Yeager Award in Pharmacy The Yeager Award, supported by Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Yeager and Sarah Yeager McKee, is a merit scholarship for a deserving student in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. It was established in 1994.
