Since 1993 I have been working in tertiary education as an academic developer in Centres for Teaching and Learning, and in Human Resources. I presently work part time as an academic developer at the Division of Biology, University of Zurich. In addition I have my own one-woman company called alean-academics. As a freelance trainer, I give courses in transferable skills (e.g. project management, oral and poster presentations, career development, mentoring, supervision of students, university teaching and learning) for researchers and teachers at institutions of higher education throughout Switzerland and in neighbouring Germany. I completed my Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of California, Berkeley whereupon I embarked on an academic career as a professor at UCLA, UC Berkeley and McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After my return to Switzerland, I became professor of management psychology and director of the Chair of Higher Education at the EPFL in Lausanne.
