You have 110 minutes for the exam. Please bring an ID and a green scantron sheet as well as a pencil. Course Description: Human Anatomy and Physiology is a two-semester course, intended for Allied Health and science majors. Course I (BSC1085) introduces anatomy and physiology of the human body. This course includes cell structure and function and basic concepts of A&P. The focus of this course (A&P I) is on the basic concepts, the cellular level, the integument, as well as muscle physiology, neurophysiology and functional organization of the brain. Remark: This course together with BSC 1086 provides the foundation for an understanding of the human body. The vast majority of students taking this course plan a career in healthcare. To anyone planning to work in the health field this class will provide the background to a deeper understanding about yourself and your patients. A patient s life or health may depend on whether you know what you are doing. Additionally, this class will provide the necessary background for other professional courses that rely on anatomy and physiology. Therefore, learn as much as you can in this class. You will benefit from it. Also, I will maintain a high standard for this class, considering the above. Do not expect to pass unless you show proficiency. Course Outcomes: Students will be able to 1. recognize and understand anatomical and physiological terminology 2. apply the concept of homeostasis to human physiological activity. 3. Know major organic and inorganic chemicals as they relate to the human body. 4. describe cellular structure and cellular activity. 5. discuss anatomical and physiological features of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and sensory systems. 6. evaluate select pathological conditions as they relate to normal functioning of the above-named systems. 4 7. prepare for the subsequent course (BSC 1086) by paying particular emphasis to general features of biochemical and cellular physiology, as well as neuronal integration of various body processes. Pre- and Co-Requirements for this course: College level reading and writing! Current enrollment in or completion of BSC 1085L (the laboratory part of this course). Note that lab and lecture complement each other. Computer literacy, which means you must be comfortable working on the internet; watching streaming downloads, using and working in a learning management system like Blackboard. Required materials: 1. Hardware and software: Computer access and internet connection! A web-browser (the following version do definitely work: IE8 and IE9; Firefox 3.6; Safari.) JAVA (careful with updates. Check Blackboard for version compatibility) 2. You need to register in Mastering A&P. 3. Everyone needs an A&P textbook or access to the electronic textbook. Specifics see below. During your registration in Mastering A&P, use MAPGERMROTH26394 as the course ID when prompted to enter the course ID. You will use Mastering A&P to complete GetReady for A&P, complete the IP practice assignments and to do all the chapter practice assignments. Furthermore, Mastering A&P links to a work area that offers plenty of study material and help. OPTIONS: see below Buy the Marieb package at HCC and you have: FREE access to all required online material The package = Textbook, and access code for Mastering A&P. 5 Expected work-sequence for each chapter: Note: not all five activities are expected in each chapter. 1. Watch the narrated Power Point lectures or slides that are posted in your weekly folders at MyHCC. 2. Then study every chapter topic in the textbook in the proper manner. Focus only on topic areas covered in the lecture or slide show. Refer to Get Ready for A&P- How to read a textbook if you are not clear what to study means. 3. For muscle physiology and neurophysiology also use Interactive Physiology and work on all interactive exercises that are offered for muscle physiology and neurophysiology. (Access via work area tab in Mastering A&P) 4. Read extra materials in the respective folder and watch suggested extra videos. 5. For credit complete: a. All assigned tests on time (in MyHCC) b. All chapter practice assignments (in Mastering A&P) c. The IP practice assignments (in Mastering A&P) d. The Get-Ready for A&P post tests (in Mastering A&P) e. Commentary on podcasts in the discussion area (in MyHCC). Pay attention to quality of content and grammar since this is also your Gordon-Rule assignment. Gordon Rule Assignment: Your special writing requirement will be fulfilled by contributing thoughtful comments to the podcasts. Since this counts as your Gordon- Rule requirement I will check spelling and grammar as well as thoughtfulness and logic of content. Deadline is Your written work will be evaluated by content and by writing skills (grammatical correctness, correct use of terms, logical sentence construction, proper use of paragraphs etc.) The evaluation for these assignments is, due to the very nature of assessing use of language, to some degree subjective. You will receive a pass or fail grade. Note: This class (BSC1085) cannot be passed without submitting a satisfactory Gordon Rule assignment. The comments must be submitted before the deadline or the requirement is counted as failed. Any work that is not the genuine product of the student submitting it (for example a plagiarized comment) will receive a failing grade and lead to further disciplinary action. Gordon- Rule Paper evaluation rubric: Passed Mostly standard grammar and spelling. Overall well organized with minor flaws. Ideas and opinions are communicated in a comprehensible way and the arguments can be logically followed. Failed Mostly poor grammar and frequent misspellings Confusing organization, failure to separate arguments or to have no arguments. 6 Commentary is at least beyond the obvious and demonstrates an understanding of topic s implications. Commentary banal, generic or demonstrates failure to grasp topic s implications. Grade Determination: The comprehensive final exam must be taken on the Dale Mabry campus in person. (see time plan on page 3 of this syllabus). Missing the final exam due to the flu or other grave circumstances: If you miss the final exam and can produce documentation attesting to sickness or other extenuating circumstances beyond your personal responsibility you may be granted an alternate date/time or location. I will determine whether the provided excuse warrants an exception. These are the items used for assessing your progress, knowledge, and level of comprehension (= your earned credit): 1. Online tests (11 total). 2. Chapter practice (11 total) 3. Podcast discussions and responses (3 total). 4. Interactive Physiology assignments (2 total) 5. Get Ready for A&P post tests (6 total) 6. A comprehensive final exam, which consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Grading: The grade will be calculated from: Multiple choice tests = 50% Chapter practice assignments = 15% IP assignments = 05% Get Ready for A&P post tests = 05 % the final exam = 25% Grade determination will be out of 100 percent! (Podcast responses provide a 5% bonus! ) A=90-100%; B=80-89%; C=79-65%; D=60-65%; F= less than 60%. Your score and calculated grade will be updated weekly and shown in the Mastering A&P grades section. Your final percentage and final grade will also be entered in the MyHCC coursesite.
