While there, the national ELNEC team met Joyce Marete, a nurse who was working at Kenyatta Hospice and also doing research on wound care, thanks to a grant from the Princess Diana Fund. Joyce shared with the ELNEC team that her goal was to go back to her village, Nanyuki, Kenya, and begin a palliative care program. However, Joyce needed funding to begin this work. The national ELNEC Project Team shared this need with trainers and you responded in such a way that Joyce was able to begin working as a palliative care nurse in a part of the world, where such care was unknown. Below, is an update from Joyce, sharing the reality of her vital work. Greetings from Laikipia Palliative Care Centre (LPCC). This is to let you know that we started offering palliative care services at Nanyuki. It is going well, a bit of a challenge, as is expected in all new beginnings. I will always remember my first home visit. It was a bright day and the sun was scorching hot. It was a 3 km walk. My first challenge was on the way to the home visit, my right shoe got torn and separated from its sole. I resolved to continue walking bare foot the rest of the journey and finally got to the patient s home. He was blind and in a lot of pain. I provided the necessary pain medication and offered psychological support. I managed to leave the patient and his relatives a bit more comfortable and as I left I resolved to think of more ways to relieve pain and suffering to the patients here. This experience was an eye opener for us at LPCC as we get ready for the challenges ahead. We appreciate your continued support. If you would like to help Joyce continue this important work, go to for further information.
