4 SESSION DESCRIPTIONS Leadership: Lessons in Ethics and Values Dana C. McWay, JD, RHIA This session focuses is on educating health-care professionals how to recognize the way ethics and values are embedded in leadership styles and how they can be applied in the workplace. Key areas addressed are; current crises in leadership, controlling what can be controlled, identifying individual ethical orientation and values, applying ethical orientation and values in the workplace, leader s role in supervision, and the role of Web 2.0 technologies in ethics. The program is interactive, both individually as participants and as a group. Use of Social Media in Healthcare Education Joy Burnard, RN, MSN Healthcare Education Consultant, ATI This session is designed to introduce healthcare educators to the world of social media, and to begin the dialogue of its presence and validity within healthcare education. Participants will gain an understanding of micro-sharing as a means to disseminate current healthcare trends and information, as well as a conduit for networking within the field of healthcare. Preparing Students for the NCLEX Exam Mary Ann Hogan, RN, MSN Clinical Assistant Professor, Director Traditional Undergraduate Track, School of Nursing, University of Massachusetts Amherst This session will provide suggestions on various strategies to help prepare students for the NCLEX exam. Ideas for integrating preparation across the curriculum and end of program strategies will be discussed. Innovations in Handheld Technology Tim Bristol, PhD, RN, CNE Owner, Nurse Tim, Inc This concurrent session will focus on the use of handhelds in the classroom, clinical, and lab environments. Emphasis will be placed on knowledge management, clinical decision support and student interaction. We will explore strategies to prepare students for using these tools as a means for success in school and on the job. Simulation Made Simple Melody Bethards, RN, MSN, CNE Simulation Clinical Liaison, DMACC Brenda Smith, RN, BSN Resource Lab Coordinator, DMACC Healthcare educators are often challenged to provide active learning experiences within budget constraints. The use of medium-fidelity simulation manikins along with quality simulation scenarios and simple moulage techniques can provide excellent learning experiences for students. Participants in this session will work as a group to develop a simulation scenario and program, and to moulage a medium-fidelity simulation manikin. Getting the Most from Standardized Testing Marguerite Stahley Ambrose, PhD, ACN BC Associate Professor, Immaculata University. Attend this session to find out more about standardized testing and establishing testing policies, setting benchmarks and consequences, increasing student remediation and evaluating your curriculum. The Disruptive Student, Incivility and Academic Misconduct: How to Handle These Issues in the Classroom Deb McKittrick Judicial Officer, DMACC This session will identify areas where students act out and the measures that can be taken to prevent or curb these behaviors. Participations are invited and encouraged to bring specific concerns and issue for discussion. Great Beginnings: Transitioning From Student to Staff Member Michelle Hofbauer, RN, MSN, CMSRN Clinical Resource Nurse, Mary Greeley Medical Center This session will explore the challenges facing new graduates as they transition from student to staff. We will discuss the expectations of new graduate vs. expectation of employer. We will talk about ways to fill in the gaps, improving the transition and creating an environment of mentoring to support all unit staff. Using Simulation in Nursing Education to Enhance Patient-Centered Care Carolyn Cason, RN, PhD Professor and Associate Dean for Research, University of Texas and Arlington School of Nursing This session will describe the process of using an undergraduate nursing curriculum to identify, select and sequence simulationbased learning experiences to enhance patient-centered care. Case examples will be used to illustrate the process, activities and outcomes. Virtual Presence & Other Strategies to Polish Your Online Courses Thelma Sword, Ed.D., MSN, RN Associate Professor of Nursing, Graceland College The continued growth of online teaching and learning brings new challenges to even the seasoned instructor. The literature clearly identifies online presence and the building of community as essential elements of successful online courses. This session will explore online presence with some suggestions for those new to online teaching. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences and tips as we discuss best practices in online teaching and learning. What Are We Doing to Stop the Cycle of the Syndrome Known as Nurses Eat their Young? Deb McKittrick, Judicial Officer, DMACC It has long been recognized that the hierarchical configurations at health care organizations help support and contribute to bullying, and to the lateral and horizontal violence that continues to occur. What are Nurse Educators doing to help new nurses deal with this issue? Humor and Healing from the Patient s Perspective Brenda Elsagher We ve all had tough experiences that may have been lightened by a funny moment. These moments can help us cope with immediate or chronic problems to give us needed relief at times. Brenda will share examples of how she used humor to cope with tough medical issues and how it benefited the health professionals as well.

5 speaker bios Dana McWay, JD, RHIA, is both a lawyer and a health information management professional. Ms. McWay has served on several committees for the American Health Information Management Association, most recently on the Professional Ethics Committee and the Missouri Health Information Management Association. She has many years of working with legal and ethical issues in healthcare Melody Bethards, RN, MSN, CNE is a faculty member at Des Moines Area Community College. Melody is the simulation liaison for the DMACC Nursing Program. She coordinates learning experiences using simulation for all the DMACC campuses Thelma Sword, EdD, MSN, is an associate professor of Nursing at Graceland University. For the past nine years she has taught nursing courses in an online format, first at the University of Phoenix and now at Graceland. She developed and holds the position of Online Teaching and Learning Coordinator with the School of Nursing, working with faculty new to online teaching and learning. Brenda Elsagher is a fulltime national keynote speaker, author, columnist and comic. She writes a quarterly humor column in a medical newsletter, has a blog and is an active volunteer with the United Ostomy Association and the Colorectal Cancer Coalition. Brenda will share examples of how she used humor to cope with tough medical issues and how it benefited the health professionals. She has won the Golden Mic award from the American Cancer Society along with the Advocacy to Action Award by the GYRIG, Get your Rear in Gear Association. Deb McKittrick is a Judicial Officer with Des Moines Area Community College. Deb received her Juris Doctorate from Drake Law School. Deb has many duties at DMACC, including design conflict resolution programs, trainings and workshops, mediation services for faculty-to-student and student-to-student conflict, and coaching for individuals to assist them in conflict resolution within all levels of the college community. Michelle Hofbauer, RN, MSN, CMSRN, is a Clinical Resource Nurse for Mary Greeley Medical Center. She is responsible for the orientation and education of nurses and patient care techs on the medical/surgical floor. Michelle is certified as a medical surgical nurse and has served as a nurse educator for Basic Life Support at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Mary Ann Hogan, RN,MSN, has been a nurse educator for more than 20 years, and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught in diploma, associate degree, and baccalaureate nursing programs. A former item writer for the CAT NCLEX-RN, she has been teaching NCLEX review programs for the past 14 years, with a particular interest in working with students who have English-as-a-second-language to prepare for exams. She has contributed to a number of publications in the area of NCLEX review, adult health, and fundamentals of nursing. Ms. Hogan is a member of the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International. Tim Bristol, PhD, RN, CNE, is a nurse educator and educational consultant. He has taught at all levels of nursing in both public and private institutions, and has consulted with the healthcare industry through public health, acute care, long-term care, and professional trade organizations. He also shares his work through a number of written works on e-learning and faculty development. Specializing in instructional design with an emphasis in curricular innovation, Dr. Bristol is owner of NurseTim, Inc. and a member of the faculty at Walden University Joy Burnard RN, MSN, received her BSN in nursing from Southern Nazarene University in 1982, and her Master s in Nursing Education from California State University Bakersfield in She has extensive experience in both patient and staff development, with an emphasis in Diabetes Education and curriculum development. Joy has teaching experience at both the BSN and ADN Levels, as adjunct faculty at CSU Bakersfield and Point Loma Nazarene University Bakersfield, and as associate professor at Bakersfield College. Prior to her role as Health Education Consultant with ATI, she was part of the ATI Live Review Team. Joy is passionate about student success and being creative in the classroom! Brenda Smith, RN, BSN is a Resource Lab Coordinator with Des Moines Area Community College. Brenda is currently finishing her Master of Science of Nursing degree at Walden University with a focus on Nursing Education. Prior to her work at DMACC, Brenda worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa Marguerite Stahley Ambrose, PhD, ACNS,BC, is an Associate Professor at Immaculata University. Marguerite s teaching interests include Teaching Strategies and Curriculum Delivery, Professional Nursing Issues, Legal Issues in Higher Education and Cultural Issues and Healthcare. Carolyn L. Cason, RN, PhD, is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research at The University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing. Carolyn has taught extensively in the area of theory and research. She has assisted with the publication of many books, articles and other media over many years.
