Nursing Baccalaureate Course: Care of the Veteran In support of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Department of Veterans Affairs Joining Forces initiative, Angelo State University Department of Nursing (ASU) pledged to improve the care of our veterans, military service members, and their families by enriching nursing education at ASU to ensure current and future nurses are educated in the unique clinical challenges and best practices associated with caring for this important population. I developed The Care of the Veteran (NUR 4381 Special Topics) course and first taught it as an elective in the Fall semester of I am also currently teaching this course as an online elective (Fall 2014). Content of the course includes the following topics: Conflict related health care issues in specific eras (WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, OIF/OEF, etc.) Women veterans Military sexual trauma Traumatic brain injury Post-traumatic stress disorder Resources for the veteran Kristin Ramirez - 2
3 San Angelo Community Medical Center Anticoagulation Clinic Advance Practice Nurse, ACNS-BC August, 2011 to present Provide care to individuals who require anticoagulation management. Help patients safely manage their anticoagulation medications, including Warfarin sodium and Coumadin, and increase the amount of time their blood tests (INR) remain in the appropriate/therapeutic range. Through these interventions, will strive to reduce the need for unnecessary hospitalization, improve quality of life, reduce the severity of illness, reduce risk of cardiac disease, and improve outcomes for the target population. Primary teaching specialty: Biology-The Human Body: Structure and function of the principal systems of the human body Park University Online Primary teaching specialty: Biology-The Human Body: Structure and function of the principal systems of the human body West Texas Veterans Administration Health Care System April, August, 2010 Lead Coordinator-Care Coordination Home Tele-health RN Instructor for Diabetes Group Clinic Care Coordination Home Tele-health (CCHT) is a specialty primary care service developed to help veteran s manage the chronic diseases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF) through the use of a home based computerized health monitor and messaging device. This technology helps provide and support health care when distance separates the participants. Through the use of this device I was able to monitor the health status of the patient on a continuing basis for signs and symptoms of an Kristin Ramirez - 3
4 exacerbation of their disease. I helped implement this new program at the WTVAHCS and as the Lead coordinator I developed the standard operating procedures for the clinic, equipment handling and infection control policies, and was responsible for maintaining competencies of the CCHT staff. My responsibilities as an RN in CCHT were as follows: Assessment of patients who indicate a change in condition Intervention and/or change in treatment regimen per established protocols Collaboration/communication with physician and pharmacist Educate patients on signs and symptoms of exacerbation of condition Collaborates with patient for implementation and evaluation of the care coordination plan to ensure realistic outcomes Developing and initiating the care coordination plan and revising as necessary PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Green Zone Training October 24, 2013 Training is offered by the Angelo State University VETS (Veterans Educational and Transitional Services) Center in an effort to train ASU faculty and staff about issues important to student veterans. As our service members transition from active duty service to college student life, they are met with many challenges. It is the goal of the VETS Center to assist these students with this transition to ensure that they have a positive student experience. The ASU community can assist in this transition by learning about the issues that affect our student veterans, the strengths that student veterans bring to campus and the classroom, and understanding how they can help.
