3 Welcome Dear Honored Guest: On behalf of the University of California, Berkeley s Pre-Pharmacy Informational Learning and Leadership Society (PILLS), it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 8th Annual Northern California Pre-Pharmacy Symposium (NCPPS). For the past eight years, NCPPS has been committed to providing a forum for the exchange of information and resources through a day of workshops, networking, and camaraderie. We aim to spread awareness of the growing field of pharmacy and to explore the pharmacist s expanding role in healthcare, the community, and public health. This year s program features a variety of informational workshops led by distinguished speakers as well as panels of pharmacy students and pharmacists of diverse specialties. Representatives of some of the top pharmacy schools in the nation are also here to provide insight into their programs and requirements through information sessions. A luncheon and school fair supplement the workshops, allowing time to network with fellow peers, professors, pharmacists, current pharmacy students, and recruiters from pharmacy schools across the country. The field of pharmacy is being redefined as technological advances have accelerated in conjunction with reform that has been implemented. With an increase in the number of patients seeking treatment, pharmacists are filling the void for patients needing care by having an expanded clinical role. We hope that NCPPS highlights how pharmacists are integral members of the healthcare system that is focused on improving patient outcomes and population health. We also hope that after today, you are able to envision the bright future of the pharmacy field and see past the stereotype of pharmacists simply counting and dispensing pills. Once again, welcome to the 8th Annual NCPPS. We are honored to have you here with us today. Sincerely, PILLS Executive Board

7 SESSION 1 Compounding Pharmacy This workshop will introduce the audience to the specialized area of compounding pharmacy by discussing the training needed to practice as a compounding pharmacist and the unique duties of a compounding pharmacist. By customizing medications based on individual needs, compounding pharmacists help fill the void that is created by mass-produced drugs. Elliot Kwok, PharmD Pharmacist-In-Charge Abbotts Compounding Pharmacy, Inc. After graduating from the University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy in 1976, Elliot Kwok began his career with Kaiser Permanente in the Intensive Care Nursery with pediatricians treating premature infants. A few years later, he became the In-Patient Manager and implemented programs of unit dosing, IV additives, and discharge medication counseling at the patient s bedside. After completing a business administration course at St. Mary s College in 1987, Dr. Kwok was promoted to Chief Pharmacist and Manager of the Oakland Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. Besides dealing with operating budget and pharmacy personnel issues, he managed to open five more outpatient pharmacies and negotiated for clinical pharmacist positions. However, being a manager, Dr. Kwok drifted away from the clinical aspect of pharmacy that he loves. So during the time he was with Kaiser, he taught a pharmacology class at a California State University. After retiring from Kaiser, Dr. Kwok joined Abbotts Compounding Pharmacy, Inc., where he currently works today. He works with many different health practitioners to help patients with unique problems. For example, Abbotts compounds flavored liquids for children, transdermal pain medications for hospice patients, and suppositories for elephants with TB in addition to specializing in patient consultation in hormone replacement and pain management. Dr. Kwok believes that compounding medication is a challenging specialty pharmacy profession. It involves knowledge in biochemistry, clinical pharmacology, innovation, communication, and most importantly, caring for patients who require unique forms of medication. 5

30 SESSION 4 Research and Development Dysregulated metabolism contributes to the pathophysiology of a large number of complex human diseases, including cancer, pain, inflammation, neurodegenerative disease, atherosclerosis, obesity, and diabetes. These changes not only include fundamental rewiring of cell metabolism, but also impact the levels of metabolites and activities of enzymes that regulate them. My lab utilizes advanced functional chemoproteomic and metabolomic approaches to globally and comprehensively map altered biochemical pathways that underlie disease progression towards identifying, characterizing, and developing next-generation therapeutic strategies for combatting human disease. This workshop will focus on my research program as well as how to succeed in an academic career. Daniel Nomura, PharmD, PhD Assistant Professor UC Berkeley Dan Nomura is an assistant professor in the Metabolic Biology Program in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his PhD in Molecular Toxicology at UC Berkeley and was a postdoctoral fellow in chemical physiology at the Scripps Research Institute before returning to Berkeley as a faculty member in Research in his lab focuses on discovering and characterizing dysregulated metabolic networks in disease by using chemoproteomic and metabolomic platforms to identify enzymes that represent nodal points of control for pharmacological intervention and therapy. 28

32 SESSION 4 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SCHOOL OF PHARMACY Joel Gonzales Director of Admissions Joel Gonzales has been the Director of Admissions at University of California San Francisco s School of Pharmacy (UCSF) since Born and raised in California s Central Valley, Joel attended the University of San Diego where he majored in Speech Communication and Leadership Studies. He then relocated to the greatest city in the world to pursue graduate studies of Organization & Leadership in Higher Education at the University of San Francisco. Mr. Gonzales has been with the UCSF School of Pharmacy since Mr. Gonzales invites you to visit his admissions blog at edu that provides valuable insight into the admissions process at UCSF, in addition to helpful tips for the admissions process, and other useful information. The University of California, San Francisco is a graduate-level only campus devoted solely to the health sciences and is one of the top medical centers in the nation. Founded in 1872, its School of Pharmacy was the first pharmacy school in the West. A few decades later, UCSF became the first to integrate a clinical pharmacy program into its curriculum and standardized the integration of pharmacists into a holistic healthcare team to work directly with patients. Today, the school continues to be one of the top pharmacy schools in the nation, offering a wide variety of academic programs and dual degrees and receiving more research funding from National Institutes of Health than any of its peers. UCSF also prides itself in being a rich and diverse campus that fosters only the most innovative leaders in research, healthcare policy, and the community. Location: San Francisco, CA Programs: PharmD (4), PharmD/MSCR (6), PharmD/PhD (8) In-state/Out-of-state tuition: $35,375/$47,620 Class size: 122 Requires PCAT: No Website: 30
33 SESSION 4 Oncology Pharmacy Oncology pharmacy involves both in-patient and outpatient areas. This workshop will discuss chemotherapy orders and protocols, oncology patient consultations, and oncology pharmacists integral part in oncology patient care. Julie Schwenka, PharmD Clinical Adult Heme/BMT Pharmacist UCSF Medical Center Julie Schwenka, originally from Southern California, received her PharmD from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy and decided to stay in the area due to her love of San Francisco. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Riverside. Her pharmacy career started in the US Navy where she specialized in pharmacy and was a hospital corpsman. After being discharged from the military, she worked as a pharmacy technician for 12 years at a county hospital before going to pharmacy school. As a pharmacist, she has worked at Kaiser South San Francisco, Alameda County Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, and UCSF. Dr. Schwenka became interested in oncology after she got to know some oncology patients while she was a pharmacy technician and fell in love with their compassion and gratitude. She loves her job because it is always changing and evolving--there is always research to be done on new drugs and drug classes. 31
34 SESSION 4 HIV Pharmacy This workshop will discuss the HIV patient population, the typical role and importance of HIV specialty pharmacists in a community setting, and the challenges community HIV pharmacists encounter. Philip Kong, PharmD HIV Pharmacist Los Portales Pharmacy Philip Kong is currently a pharmacist at Los Portales Specialty Pharmacy in San Francisco. He is also the Community Service Co-Chair for the Golden Gate Society of Health System Pharmacists. Dr. Kong earned his Bachelor of Arts in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley and his PharmD from the University of Michigan. His clinical interests include infectious diseases and pain management.
