1 JOB DESCRIPTION POST: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Psychology (2 posts) DATE: Sept 2015 FACULTY: Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences POST NO: HSS- J26/J27 STARTING DATE: Jan 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter SALARY RANGE: Lecturer Senior Lecturer Grade 7: 33,242 to 37,394 per annum pro rata Grade 8: 38,511 to 45,954 per annum pro rata INDEFINITE/FIED TERM: Indefinite HOURS: Full time 1.0FTE REPORTING TO: Head of Department THE POST: The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint talented and enthusiastic Lecturers or Senior Lecturers in Psychology to join the expanding team of academic staff in the Department of Psychology. This is an exciting time to be joining the department as we build on our successful student recruitment and growing research presence. The post holder will participate fully in the department s range of teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities. The department currently offers an established portfolio of British Psychological Society accredited undergraduate programmes and an MSc in Forensic Psychology. The successful candidate must be able to contribute specialist knowledge relevant to Psychology that complements the current research interests and teaching in the department. The post is open to candidates in any area of Psychology, but applications from candidates with expertise in areas that have an applied or practitioner focus and/or could contribute to future REF impact case studies would be particularly welcome. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To undertake teaching, module leadership and supervision duties across the range of Psychology programmes. To offer specialist expertise in any area of Psychology, but applications candidates with expertise in areas that have an applied or practitioner focus and could contribute to future REF impact case studies would be particularly welcome.
2 To be actively engaged in research and knowledge exchange, publishing in appropriate peer-reviewed academic journals and other outlets, presenting at appropriate conferences, and participating in the research culture of the department and Faculty. To be active in pursuing external funding through grant applications or/and consultancy work. To undertake administrative duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant departmental and Faculty committees and activities. To participate in external activity, related to the discipline, learning and teaching and research. To contribute to the promotion of the programmes to both current and prospective students. The person appointed will be required to undertake such other duties, such as participation in departmental, Faculty and University meetings, as may from time to time be allocated by the Vice Chancellor, Dean of Faculty or relevant Head of Department. OTHER DUTIES The successful candidate will normally be required to act as Personal Tutor to a small group of students. This will entail being concerned not only for the students academic achievements, but also for their personal welfare. All full time staff are expected to contribute to University administration, course planning, curriculum development, the recruitment of students, engage in research and knowledge transfer and scholarly activities. Additionally, staff are required to participate in relevant staff development activities. Some of the department s activities take place in evenings and weekends and staff are expected to be available for a limited number of duties taking place outside the nine-to-five working week. The person appointed will be required to undertake such other duties as may from time to time be allocated by the Head of Department/Dean of Faculty/Vice Chancellor. General Information It is anticipated that this job description will change over time in accordance with the needs of the role. The role holder will be fully consulted on any proposed amendments. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The appointment will be made at the level of Lecturer Grade 7: 33,242 to 37,394 per annum, or Senior Lecturer - Grade 8: 38,511 to 45,954 per annum. Exact placement on the salary scale will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Salary is paid monthly in arrears by direct credit transfer on the last working day of each month
3 Your normal centre of duty will be the King Alfred Campus. However, you may be required to work in any part or department of the University and in any Campus of the University or as otherwise required for the due performance of your duties and responsibilities. The annual leave year runs from 1 August to 31 July. Holiday entitlement is 35 days per year plus statutory Bank Holidays and local discretionary days. A proportion of this entitlement is allowed pro rata for part-time staff. Other terms and conditions of employment appropriate to this post and grade apply in addition to those referred to in this statement. The list of benefits includes Pension Scheme, Sick Pay Scheme, Maternity and Paternity leave and pay (subject to eligibility). Facilities Staff catering facilities are available. West Downs Day Nursery - is situated within the grounds of The University of Winchester. The nursery offers care for children from the age of six weeks to five years in a stimulating and homely environment. The nursery provides 62 places each day from 7.30am to 6.15pm on a full time or sessional basis. The opening times are designed to accommodate the working parent who may wish to continue their career. Further details are available from the Human Resources Department. Sports facilities are available, e.g. gym, squash, badminton, cricket, indoor soccer, tennis, etc and staff organise their own sporting activities. 8 Research in Psychology Research in Psychology Dr Maria Uther (Academic Head of Department) T: +44 (0) E: In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, 80 per cent of the research outputs submitted by the Department of Psychology were deemed of a quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour. Research in Psychology encompasses two research groups: the Human Perception and Performance Group (led by Dr Charlie Frowd) and the Society and Communication Group (led by Dr Debra Gray). A wide range of topics are investigated and have a mix of theoretical and applied research. Members of the Research Centre belong to various national and international professional associations and have involvement with external consultancy and/or forensic practice. Allied to the Society and Communication Group are two University multidisciplinary Centres: the Centre for Gender Studies and the Centre for Research in Language. We have a good range of collaborations with local and national institutions, and have secured funding from research councils, charities, the NHS, and commercial organisations. The Department of Psychology hosts a popular series of research seminars which staff, MSc, MPhil and PhD students attend. Postgraduate students become active members of one of the research groups. The Department has excellent psychology research and laboratory facilities including six experimental cubicles, all equipped with Superlab and E-Prime for computer-based experimentation, many with touchscreens and response pads. The developmental research laboratory is equipped with a one-way mirror and an experimental area with touchscreen PCs. The Eye-tracker laboratory has EyeLink 1,000 tower and remote systems. In addition there is a well-equipped colour laboratory; a social observation laboratory with integrated video and audio capacity, suitable for observational and small group work; and a face perception laboratory containing an interview suite and dedicated forensic software. The Department maintains a well-stocked psychometric test library and a range of other equipment, most notably BIOPAC systems, as well as laptops, video and digital cameras and recording equipment. There is also a BioSemi 64-channel EEG system, housed in its own laboratory. The Department has a successful track record of supervision of research degrees to PhD level, and enquiries are welcome for any topics which fall within the remit of our research interests.
