3 Psychology at Goldsmiths As a department we re interested in cross-disciplinary research that relates psychological theory from the lab to life. So if you study here you ll get to grips with the investigative side of the subject and see how you can apply your theories to a whole range of public settings, from advertising to schools to government policy. Why choose Psychology at Goldsmiths? We re hands-on and on hand. You ll train in psychology s core research methods, design your own studies, carry out statistical analyses and learn how to promote your knowledge in public, but you ll also get support across all these areas through one-to-one mentoring, small group and lab sessions. We re equipped to support you. You will have support from our in-house technical support staff in using a whole suite of specialist equipment and software. Our on-site facilities include a Visual Perception and Attention Laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art eye-tracking systems and neuroscience labs, including EEG and brain stimulation. And our research units (see box, right) boast the latest facilities for you to carry out research and lab work. We re out in the world. From how sound sells brands to bullying in schools, we investigate and conduct research in a range of sectors and industries, so you ll see how psychological research informs and influences the world outside whether it s an advertising agency, a bank or the BBC. And from the first term you ll be thinking about how to apply your skills in practice. By joining us you will be part of a researchrich department. Find out about our main areas of investigation on page 7. Specialist research units Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit (APRU): established by Professor Chris French to provide a focus for research activity in Anomalistic Psychology. 5 Our degrees MSc in Cognitive & Clinical Neuroscience msc-cognitive-clinical-neuroscience This exciting MSc reflects our broad-ranging and strong neuroscience research profile, equipping you with a rigorous grounding in the theory and applications of cognitive, clinical and developmental neuroscience. We are now offering two pathways on this Masters: a Cognitive Neuropsychology pathway and a Methods and Techniques pathway. The Cognitive Neuropsychology pathway has been developed in partnership with the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre & Neurodisability Service. The emphasis will be on research and clinical aspects of cognitive neuroscience. The emphasis of the Methods and Techniques pathway will be on practical hands-on training in methods and techniques used in cognitive neuroscience research. MSc in Foundations in Clinical Psychology & Health Services msc-clinical-psychology-health-services Giving you a strong knowledge and experience base for progressing to health service careers, this MSc is also ideal if you are wanting to be a clinical psychologist or clinical psychology researcher. It will equip you with an up-to-date knowledge of relevant theory and practical issues in UK mental health services, and you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake research and development in healthcare settings, including service evaluations, clinical audits and intervention evaluations. The flexibility of the degree means you can follow up a particular interest with option courses including: addictive behaviours, organisational behaviour and health, neuro-developmental disorders, behaviour genetics, and psychopathology. MSc in Music, Mind & Brain This unique MSc combines music psychology with neuroscience, focusing on both the biological and cognitive aspects of musical behaviour. The degree is highly interdisciplinary and draws on expertise from leading figures in related fields: in cognitive neuroscience, music cognition, computational modelling, music education and music therapy. You will learn about music psychology (from perception to cognition) and the cognitive neuroscience of music, and will acquire all the necessary skills to pursue your own high quality research. All the teaching staff on the degree have international profiles within the fields of music psychology and/or the neuroscience of music. The programme benefits from good links with institutions such as the Institute of Education, the Royal College of Music, and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. MSc in the Science of Psychology, Genetics & Education msc-psychology-genetics-education This MSc aims to equip you with a thorough understanding of cutting-edge cross-cultural research linking genetics with psychology and education. Why do people differ in their ability to learn different subjects? What role do genes play in ability and achievement, and how do educational methods interact with them? The answers to these and more fascinating questions are explored. Taught by the leading academics in the field, you will use interdisciplinary methods and integrate the latest knowledge about genetic, brain, and cognitive mechanisms into educationally relevant research. You will be introduced to different methods and explore their application to educationally relevant investigations, with the ultimate goal of improving learning. 6 Our degrees continued MRes in Research Methods in Psychology mres-research-methods-psychology This programme trains you in the fundamental aspects of quantitative and qualitative research, including research design, data collection and data analysis. It provides you with practical, hands-on experience, as well as a seminar series on topical and controversial issues within psychology. It will enable you to correctly apply advanced statistical and computing techniques, and present and evaluate effective research studies. The MRes will appeal to you if you would like to develop your career in experimental research, or to enhance your ability to apply research skills in either the public or private sector. For more than 10 years, the MRes has been recognised by the ESRC as providing the generic and specific research training required by students in receipt of ESRC studentship awards. MPhil and PhD in Psychology 3-4 years full-time or 4-6 years part-time We re committed to developing postgraduates into skilled researchers who can conduct rigorous research using a variety of methodologies and methods. Supervision can be offered in any of the areas of departmental activity, as reflected in the research interests of our staff (see opposite). During your first year you may take a range of taught courses including research design and analysis, methodology, theoretical issues and statistics. You will attend and contribute to research seminars, and through departmental and Goldsmiths-wide courses you are also encouraged to develop practical skills such as public speaking, scientific writing, and how to deal with the media. You will meet regularly with your supervisor, and develop a structured approach to designing, executing, analysing and writing up your research. Student insight Kathy, MSc in the Science of Psychology, Genetics & Education Everyone on the course is helpful and friendly we have worked together as a group supporting each other through every aspect of the MSc. The lecturers are enthusiastic and encouraging. This programme has given me the opportunity not only to learn new research methods and to apply them to specific research questions, but also to learn about best ways to disseminate scientific research to different audiences. 6
7 Our research The Department of Psychology is a flourishing centre of research, with one in five of our students a postgraduate. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (2008) we were ranked 24th among UK psychology departments, a result that reflected our academics excellent publications, and our strong research environment. The Department s research is structured around four main clusters: The Applied Psychology cluster This group includes forensic psychology, occupational psychology (including staff in the recently opened Institute of Management Studies at Goldsmiths), media and music psychology, and applied social psychology. Research in this cluster is particularly impactful, and engaged with end-user groups while being grounded in rigorous research approaches. The Brain and Cognition cluster Carries out research in visual and spatial attention, working memory, integration across sensory modalities, reinforcement learning, problem-solving, eye-witness identification, musical cognition, and cross-cultural psychology. Research in this cluster involves behavioural, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging methods including electroencephalography (EEG), trans-cranial magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical brain stimulation (tdcs/tacs) as well as neurofeedback research, eye-tracking, computational modelling, motion capture technology, electromyography (EMG), and galvanic skin response (GSR). The Individual Differences, Social Processes and Psychopathology cluster This group is one of the largest in the UK researching personality, intelligence and clinical conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as social processes. A recent emphasis has been on behavioural genetics and gene-behaviour association studies, as well as prejudice and discrimination. The Typical and Atypical Development cluster Carries out cutting-edge studies on typical development and atypical development, including conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, emotional behaviour disorders and developmental coordination disorder. The group s research focuses on a wide range of topics, including executive functions, savant skills, music perception and cognition, colour perception and categorisation, social learning and autobiographical memory, the development of multisensory integration and processes involved in ageing. Visit to find out more about the specifc research interests our staff. i2 media research Goldsmiths Department of Psychology has a strong reputation in digital consumer research, and has formed a spin-off company, i2 media, which aims to understand the digital media experiences and needs of consumers.
