8 Learner Stories Everyone who starts one of our courses is achieving their own personal success by learning something new. Here are just a few of our success stories. Learner of the Year 2009/10 Lincolnshire and Rutland Skills for Life Awards take place in June each year. Nominations are received from employers, tutors, family and friends; of adults who have overcome considerable barriers to return and succeed in their learning programmes. Tom Spencer Tom Spencer, a learner from Riseholme College won the 2010 event. Tom had overcome many barriers to his learning and progressed the furthest. Tom was presented with a laptop, sponsored by Lincolnshire County Council. Don t just take our word for it! We can tell you how great our courses are and how it can change the lives of individuals, but we think our learners say it best. Deborah Debbie first joined Family Learning in 2007 with her eldest child to gain more insight into numeracy to help him at school. Debbie had very poor memories of her time at school, but was determined to put her children first and conquer her fear. Debbie initially struggled to integrate into the Family Learning group because of a lack of self-confidence. However, through perseverance, Debbie found herself enjoying numeracy and has since achieved her maths level 1 qualification. Learner Feedback My mobility had been decreasing over the past months and I had decided to get a computer to facilitate my grocery shopping. The course was tailored to me and I was guided through each project with remarkable patience s, attachments, Wikipedia, You Tube, Radio 3, Word Processing much more than just shopping! Laurie Lee walked out one morning and only reached Southern Spain. I sat in one winter s afternoon and found a new world
9 Learner Stories Moya Charlotte Moya has this to say about her computing course delivered by Newlink providing home-training. This course has given me the confidence to have a go at new things, knowing that now I have the ability to get back on track if I make a mistake, at least, I m not afraid to have a go. This new found confidence has had an enormous impact on my quality of life, because I can now use the Internet and with confidence, as well as pursuing my writing interests. In fact, I now spend part of every day on my computer, whereas before I very rarely used it. If I hadn t been lucky enough to get on this course, I would never have gone to a centre to learn these skills, because I now have Parkinson s and I would have been too self conscious. As a consequence, I would still be going round and round not daring to venture on to new territory, and therefore not furthering my knowledge of computers, the internet, and all the social networking sites such as YouTube and Facebook. Charlotte was filled with dread when she first got involved in Family Learning, but she felt isolated at home and thought it would be good to be with her children and other adults. Fortunately, Charlotte s nerves didn t last. She was so inspired by her experience in the classroom, that she decided to study for an Open University degree in literature. Because of her progress and achievements, Charlotte was nominated by her Tutor for the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) Learner of the Year award. I was shocked to be nominated, said Charlotte. It s a wonderful feeling to know your work has been recognised by others. What I have learned has opened up a whole new world for me, and I would urge anyone who gets the chance of a place on this course to seize the opportunity with both hands. I recommend it safe in the knowledge that no-one who completes the course will finish it disappointed. Our home-based training scheme provides up to 24 training hours in computer skills and use of the Internet for people who are either unable to attend a course outside their home or find it very difficult to do so, e.g. those with restricted mobility, carers who cannot leave their charges, the visually impaired and those for whom transport to a Learning Centre is very difficult. There is a 5.00 charge to help with administration but no other fees to pay provided that you are resident in Lincolnshire, aged 19+, and you are in genuine need of being trained in your own home. The home-based scheme works in the following way. A NewLink tutor will visit you in your own home for between one and two hours at a time. During these sessions, they will help you to acquire skills and knowledge which will enable you to understand and make better use of your computer and the Internet. Before leaving, they will agree a series of computer related exercises with you for you to complete before their next visit. These exercises will revise and extend the topics covered during their two-hour visit. If you don t have a computer, NewLink may freely lend you one for the duration of your training. You would, however, be expected to insure NewLink s computer against fire and theft. Also, at the conclusion of your training, NewLink would retrieve the computer so that it could help another learner.
