Profile of the study programme Management Profile Management The dual study programme Management offers practically oriented Business Administration studies with a special focus on the logistics sector, combined with simultaneous systematic in-company training. It provides not only the fundamentals of Business Administration, but also selected contents from the specific logistics angle, adding modules such as Supply Chain Management, Transport Planning, and Production & Warehousing. The cooperation partners are mostly logistics companies. International components The Management study programme is taught in English with most of the modules covering international aspects. Students may spend one semester at one of HSBA s partner universities or attend a summer school. Some internationally operating companies offer an internship abroad. Start date and duration The course starts each year on 1 October. The duration of the programme is three years. It combines theory blocks at the university (20 weeks per year on average) with practical blocks in the company (32 weeks per year on average). Course fees and funding The course fees for students beginning in the academic year 2014 amount to EUR 580 per month. Up-to-date information on course fees is published at Academic degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) with 180 ECTS. The study programme is accredited by the FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation). Commercial vocational training qualification In agreement with the company, students may also obtain a commercial vocational training qualification during the degree (e.g. Schifffahrtskaufmann/-frau ). The companies generally pay most of the course fees, at least if the student remains with the company after finishing his/her degree. It is not unusual for the agreement to contain a clause that specifies that the student must stay on in the company for a certain period of time. In addition, students receive traineeship remuneration, the amount of which depends on the respective industry and company. Students may also apply for student loans or public funding (BAföG). 4 Studying at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics Dual approach HSBA s academic approach follows the basic principle of duality, which combines a challenging theoretical study programme with systematic practical professional experience. Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the lectures and apply these in practice. Based on the experiences obtained at the company, the knowledge acquired is then discussed, reflected upon and continuously expanded on in the seminars. In order to ensure the consistent transfer of scientific theory to company practice, we attach a great deal of importance to the interplay of academic excellence and many years of professional experience in well-known companies when selecting our teaching staff. Employability approach HSBA s study programmes are geared to the needs of practice and open up excellent career opportunities. Our graduates have a solid basis in business administration with an industry or function-specific focus and are quickly in a position to take on responsibility in the company. Value approach Excellence Commitment Fairness: These are the overarching values on which all activities at HSBA are based. In our mission statement, which is adhered to by all university members and our partner companies, we have agreed to observe the values of the honourable merchant. Issues concerning (international) business ethics and sustainability are incorporated in all study programmes as an overlapping topic, and form a focal point of the academic gearing. International approach Internationality is an essential component of a state-of-theart study programme, particularly in Hamburg, a city that sees itself as the gateway to the world. HSBA thus attaches great importance to the international nature of the course contents, offers a wide range of modules and events in English and encourages studying abroad. Network approach HSBA maintains close connections with a large number of institutions in Hamburg and around the world. Our more than 220 partner companies are at the core of our strong corporate network, flanked by the Association of Friends and Supporters of HSBA, the VEEK (Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns zu Hamburg e.v., The Hounorable Society of Hamburg Merchants), the HSBA Alumni Association and our international partner universities. Service approach Students receive academic support from the teaching staff and support in all other issues from the management (including Programme Management, International Office). Companies can discuss their questions and suggestions with the responsible academic and administrative staff. 6 7

References Management The specific logistics modules and the high proportion of quantitative methods makes the Management course particularly suitable for students who want to work in an international industry and are interested in business administration issues and complex planning operations. Prof. Dr. Jan Ninnemann, Head of Management Programme What s special about HSBA is that the students themselves can help to shape the university. There is a committee for community projects, a debating club, a trade fair team, a hockey team, a rowing team and much more. Also, the students can independently organise events under the auspices of HSBA, such as the annual Symposium or the HSBA Finance Conference. Tjorven Rohwer Student spokesperson Otto (GmbH & Co. KG) I am fascinated by planning to get the various goods to the right place at the right time in the right quantity. That is why the Management course is exactly right for me. Alexandra Rattay, HSBA student, Geodis Wilson Germany GmbH & Co. KG The logistics management course at HSBA provides an excellent combination of theory and practical training; the students are able to build up a comprehensive basic knowledge of business administration. Therefore they are optimally prepared for incompany training as well as flexible and versatile. Andrea Bauer, Human Resource Manager Buss Group As a Management graduate, I don t have to worry about my future career opportunities. There is so much demand for young people with qualifications in this area, because companies are operating globally today, and need specialist logistics know-how. 7 The dual studies system Win-win situation for students and companies The dual studies system Win-win situation for students and companies The dual system The dual principle involves students learning at two locations, namely at the university and at the company. This principle has been in use in Germany for decades, particularly as part of dual professional training, and is one of the reasons for the success of the German economy. Dual university degrees have existed since the 1970s, with more than 60,000 students currently registered at higher education institutions using the dual system. Organisation of the study programme at HSBA In accordance with their dual nature, practical and theoretical blocks alternate during the three years of study. Each semester 1 to 5 consists of 11 weeks of theory at HSBA and 15 weeks of practical training in the company. Semester 6 runs for only 5 weeks. Holidays and vacations have to be taken during the blocks at the company. Study programmes at HSBA may start with a theory block (Track A) or a practical block (Track B). This breaks down as follows: Discuss and understand Learn theory and methods Reflect theory Apply in company Academic benefits At HSBA a challenging theoretical study programme is combined with systematic practical professional experience, i.e. students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the lectures and apply these in practice. For instance, a student may attend the module Marketing 1 at HSBA in Semester 3, go back to the company to work in the Marketing department and in Semester 4 follow the module Marketing 2 to discuss his or her experiences with the application of theory at the company. Consequently, the knowledge acquired is discussed based on the experiences at the company, reflected upon and continuously expanded on in the seminars. This creates a cycle that supports the students theoretical understanding while enhancing their motivation and interest. Track A Track B Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Theory at HSBA In-company training Semester 1/3/5 Semester 2/4/(6) In-company training Theory at HSBA Theory at HSBA In-company training In-company training Theory at HSBA The role of the company In university education that uses the dual system, the partner companies have a key role to play. Not only are they responsible for the students training, they also pay a large portion of the course fees as well as a monthly salary. In 2014 Management will start with a practical block (Track B). Win-win situation for students and companies Dual courses of study provide a win-win situation for students and companies alike. The students receive an excellent education and can more or less pay their own way while studying. In the best case scenario, the company they train at will offer them a permanent position after they finish their degree. The companies in turn can recruit motivated and high-performing young people at an early stage, and can train them for practice and thus secure the company s medium-term need for new skilled staff and junior managers. Prospective students apply to the company and not to HSBA. Students in the dual programmes at HSBA have to sign a contract with a company for the entire 3 years. By offering dual bachelor s study places, HSBA s partner companies can attract high-performing junior managers and win them for their companies from an early stage. Employability and career prospects More than 90% of our graduates are offered a qualified position after finishing their studies. In addition, our alumni surveys show that almost all of our alumni consider their career prospects to be good or very good
Benefits for students Study at a great place to be! Recognised quality of HSBA and the programmes As a university, HSBA has a national institutional accreditation from the German Council of Science and Humanities. All of HSBA s study programmes are state-recognised and have received excellent ratings in current national rankings. The programmes are officially accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). The B.Sc. study programmes comprise 180 European Credits (ECTS) and correspond to a workload of 4,500 hours. This guarantees the same academic quality as a full-time course of studies at a traditional third-level institution. Additionally, more than 95% of companies rate the dual study programmes as good or very good in terms of the specialist knowledge learned and the methods used, while more than 90% of students receive offers to be kept on at the company for their next professional step immediately after finishing their studies. Almost 95% of graduates are satisfied with the study programme on the whole. Student life and involvement The students at HSBA organise leisure activities, a Symposium and a Finance Conference, perform in the HSBA band, write for the HSBA magazine, represent their university at trade fairs or face sporting challenges with the hockey and rowing teams. Our International Committee looks after international students. HSBA is dedicated to encouraging student life and involvement, as these initiatives are of central importance both for forming one s personality and for developing social and methodological skills. Excellent study conditions The bright and friendly atmosphere of our campus provides students with the best possible conditions for learning. Our small study groups facilitate productive discussions and work. All of the literature, databases and journals relevant to the courses are available in the HSBA library. Students benefit from a campus located in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the city hall and the Chamber of Commerce. Studying in Germany The positive employment prospects in Germany as an economic location means that it is attracting more and more young people who wish to get a sound education and who can also benefit from the contacts they make in Germany in their later professional life. Another factor is the affordable cost of studying in Germany. Studying in Hamburg As a seaport, Hamburg is an important location for logistics and foreign trade as well as a leading financial centre in Germany. It is also home to many advertising and multimedia agencies, media companies and cultural institutions. In addition, Hamburg is synonymous with aircraft and vehicle construction, is an important location for the health sector and has well-developed basic industry. This mix of economic potential and a good quality of life makes Hamburg one of Europe s most dynamic business regions. With the Inner Alster lake in the centre of the city, countless parks and green spaces, its proximity to two oceans, a large range of diverse leisure activities and excellent shopping, Hamburg is one of the top ten city destinations in Europe and a popular place to live and study. The high quality of life is also due to the fact that Hamburg is one of the safest cities in the world
How to apply Management Personal fitting Applicants should bear in mind that studying a dual programme is very demanding and sometimes stressful compared to traditional forms of studying. Additionally, applicants should be ready to high-perform at the company. The programme is ambitious, but, however, HSBA s students prove again and again that there still is time left for leisure or for getting involved in one of the many student committees at HSBA. Application procedure Prospective students should first find a company for the incompany part of the programme. From them they will get a so called study contract. The company will send all relevant documents to HSBA. Matriculation is possible if the applicant fulfils our admission requirements. Admission requirements Applicants need: A study contract with a company where the professional part of the course is carried out Proof of a qualification to study at a university (generally Abitur or Fachhochschulreife or a foreign equivalent) Good knowledge of Mathematics and English, proven, e.g., by advanced grade certificates or the completion of HSBA admission tests in Maths and English or, in the case of English, comparable tests (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS, minimum level: B2 of the European Framework of Reference) A template of the study contract and additional information on the minimum requirements is given on our website www. hsba.de. Foreign applicants are invited to contact HSBA if there are any doubts regarding the admission requirements. How to find a company There are several possibilities to find a company: On HSBA s online marketplace for study places (www. hsba.de/boerse) information and contact data of companies offering study places can be found. Applicants are also invited to contact a company that has not yet cooperated with HSBA. This may be a Germany based company or a foreign one. HSBA is happy to provide support when targeting new companies, especially when it comes to foreign companies. Other offerings such as applicant coaching and business speed-dating help in finding a study place (dates at The application should contain all of the customary documents such as a CV and certificates proving that the applicant fulfils the admission requirements. These documents together with the study contract are then sent to HSBA by the company. When to start with the application? When is the application deadline? There is no formal application deadline, but study places at HSBA are limited. In general, if HSBA receives all application documents before 31 May the student will be accepted for study programmes starting 1 October. Please contact HSBA, if you have not been able to match this date. The most time consuming part of the application is to find a company. Due to the high demand for a dual study place at HSBA, prospective students should generally start searching for a placement company very early (12 months in advance), especially if the applicant wants to start with a specific company. Is it possible to work for a foreign company or abroad? Yes, it is possible to stay in Hamburg for the theoretical blocks at HSBA and to work, e.g., in Paris or Dubai for the practical blocks of the programme. HSBA will help with advice on accommodation and other relevant issues. Special information for non EU-students Non-EU students may have to apply for a visa. They do not need a work permit as their status will be that of a student. For more information please consult our websites
For companies Benefits, responsibilities, how to... Our partners Managementrtner companies of HSBA on the Management degree (selection): Benefits for partner companies Winning the best junior managers: The companies can attract school-leavers who are especially motivated and able to perform under pressure and keep them in their companies from an early stage. Tailored student qualifications: Companies can train their upcoming managers in a practice-based manner. The com panies can influence the academic part of the programme by proposing the topics for the in-company project work, the bachelor s thesis or the specialisation. Immediate benefit: responsible workforce in the company. HSBA students are generally high performers, very motivated and dedicated. The students are quick to take on responsibility in the company. Partner companies in Management (more than 220 partner companies in total) Responsibilities of partner companies The companies act as partners to HSBA in training the students; as such they agree to teach certain (practice-based) content in the company and to give the student a broad insight into the company s structures. HSBA provides support to new partners in particular in the form of workshops, guidelines and assistance in preparing a suitable training plan. Costs: The students receive a payment toward their living expenses which is generally in the region of EUR 750 per month. The companies also usually pay most of the course fees (which currently amount to EUR 580 per month), at least if the student remains with the company after finishing his or her degree. It is not unusual to include a clause that specifies that the student must stay on in the company for a certain period. How to become a partner? It s easy! Companies should contact our relationship management at an early stage. Afterwards we will put your offerings on our online marketplace. Most probably you will receive very good applications before long. Additionally, our colleagues will be happy to help you if you encounter any problems. Current study places offered at
