3 About us HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration HSBA IS THE UNIVERSITY FOR BUSINESS in Hamburg. Founded in 2004 by Hamburg s Chamber of Commerce as a state-recognised third-level institution, it offers bachelor s and master s degrees in business as dual and part-time courses for more than 890 students. We are cooperating with more than 250 companies, which are actively involved in designing and developing our courses in order to ensure that they are constantly aligned with business needs. This means that HSBA graduates are perfectly prepared for the requirements of business and have excellent career opportunities. 4 Study course overview MBA Shipping THE MBA SHIPPING PROGRAMME is focused on business development in the Shipping industry and related sectors. The programme provides the students with the necessary knowledge, analytical skills and competences regarded as essential for extraordinary managerial performance in the maritime industry. The curriculum comprises thoughtprovoking lectures, state-of-the-art knowledge and discussions with business experts; this mix covers the needs of students aiming at a leading position in the industry. The full-time-week structure of the programme allows students to combine employment in locations worldwide with the MBA Shipping programme. Applicants without a university degree, yet with proven relevant experience in the industry (e.g. as Schifffahrtskaufmann), are welcome to apply. Our students This MBA course is geared towards executives with several years of professional experience with very diverse academic backgrounds but all working in the maritime sector. Due to the orga nisation of the programme, this MBA can be attended by students living or working abroad. Courses in Hamburg and abroad The marine and maritime industry is one of the most international industries in the world. Expecially in Shipping, it is crucial to have large and efficient networks. This is why HSBA decided to include visits to major shipping centres into the study programme. More specifically, the students will meet decision-makers not only in Hamburg but also in Athens/Piraeus, London and Dubai. Optional preparatory courses, company visits (port terminals and facilities, short sea voyages etc.) and general studies classes offered in other programmes are also available. Course organisation and duration On the regular track, the course lasts 24 months (six full-time lecture weeks per year). On the fast track, the programme can be studied intensively in 12 months (12 full-time lecture weeks per year). The course consists of 450 contact hours. Course fees and funding The course fees are EUR 17,500 for applications received prior to 31 May (otherwise EUR 20,000). The fees include lectures and exam fees, living and travel expenses are not covered. Tuition fees may be tax deductible. Scholarships are available. Number of student places per annum A maximum of 30 students are admitted per year. Necessary professional experience University graduates need at least two years of relevant professional experience after their graduation. Applicants without a university degree need at least six years of relevant professional experience to be admitted to the entrance exam. Language The course is taught and assessed in English. 5 Students on the MBA Shipping Class of 2015 weekly study workload of 10 to 15 hours. It is recommended that students talk with their employer about how to combine their study plans with their job before they commence their studies. Students with a German working contract can also take up to 15 days of further education leave during the course of the study programme. Qualification / degree Master of Business Administration with 60 ECTS. The study programme entitles students to proceed to doctoral studies. Accreditation The study programme is accredited by the FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation). And as a higher education institution, HSBA has been accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities. The structure of the curriculum ensures, that students gain in-depth insights into modern management theory and the specific characteristics of the maritime industry. The main focus of the MBA Shipping is the development of new business in a constantly changing environment. Growth and change management strategies are of special importance in the global shipping industry. To get acquainted with the leading shipping markets, courses take place in Hamburg, London, Athens/Piraeus and Dubai. 9 of 12 full-time weeks are taught in Hamburg, whereas 3 full-time weeks are taught abroad. Basic modules Module 1: Management & Finance In Management & Finance the theoretical economical principles are laid down and topics such as Strategy, Corporate Finance, Network Optimization and Game Theory are taught. Additionally, the students gain advanced knowledge in the fields of strategy, marketing, human resources and organization as well as in leadership. The focus lies primarily on understanding the basic concepts as well as on their application in real business. Module 2: Maritime Business In Maritime Business students will gain advanced knowledge in the fields of Maritime Business, Chartering and Global Trade. Special attention is given to the assessment of political and regulative frameworks especially with regard to the IMO regulatory framework. The module is taught in Hamburg. 6

7 Course contents MBA Shipping Module 3: Maritime Law & Insurance This module is offered with the kind assistance and active support of the legal firm L2C Luecke & Partner in Hamburg. The students shall gain advanced knowledge in the fields of Maritime Law and Insurance with a focus on Carriage of Goods by Sea, Charterparties and their implications, Marine Insurance and Protection Schemes as well as Claims and practical implications. Photo: Michael Zapf Advanced modules Module 4: International Business Clusters In the module International Business Clusters students gain international experiences and get to know London and Dubai as leading global business centres. The focus of the module lies on Financial Issues (London), Business in Asia, Logistics and Intercultural Management (Dubai). Module 5: Maritime Economics & Management The module Maritime Economics & Management concentrates on market segments, the Acquisition of Tonnage, Quality and topics in the Digitalisation of the Maritime Industry. It takes place in Athens/ Piraeus and Hamburg. Module 6: Ship Finance The module Ship Finance combines questions from Ship Financing, Valuation (Bank Loans, Equity, Derivatives, etc.) as well as many innovative Case Studies. Module 7: Development Strategies The course aims to offer the students an integrated approach to the business development issues in the maritime industry. The goal is to get students to combine knowledge gained in other modules, to interactively examine successful business cases and to learn about best practices. MBA Thesis During the four-month thesis, students examine a topic in-depth in a piece of academic work. The topic can be from the student s professional experience. Duality approach HSBA s academic approach follows the fundamental principle of duality: combining a challenging theoretical study programme with practical professional experience. Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the lectures and apply these in practice. Based on the experiences at the company, the knowledge acquired is then discussed, reflected upon and continuously expanded on in the lectures. In order to ensure the sustained transfer of scientific theory to company practice, International approach Internationality is an essential component of a balanced course offering, particularly in Hamburg, a city that sees it self as the gateway to the world. HSBA considers the international nature of the course contents to be vital, offering a wide range of study programmes and events in English as well as encouraging study abroad. The share of international students on our master s programmes is 35 per cent on average, with more and more exchange students coming to study at HSBA. 10

Excellent study conditions The bright and friendly atmosphere of our campus provides students with the best conditions for learning. Our study groups with generally no more than 30 participants facilitate productive discussions and work. All of the (compulsory) literature, databases and journals relevant are available in the HSBA library. Students benefit from the location of HSBA in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the city hall, the Chamber of Commerce with the Commerzbibliothek and the ZBW [German National Library of Economics]. Studying in Hamburg As a seaport, Hamburg is an important location for logistics and foreign trade as well as a leading financial centre in Germany. It is also home to many advertising and multimedia agencies, media companies and cultural institutions. In addition, Hamburg is synonymous with aircraft and vehicle construction and is an important location for the health sector and has a well-developed basic industry. 13 Course fees and funding Special offerings for students and companies Course fees The course fees are EUR 17,500 for the 24-month programme including exam fees for applications received prior to 31 May (i.e. including an early bird discount of 12.5 percent otherwise EUR 20,000). The course fees include networking events as well as participation in extracurricular events. Living and travel expenses are not covered. Tuition fees may be tax deductible. Scholarships and funding programmes HSBA also awards several full and part scholarships each year to cover the course fees (for example together with the VDR (Verband Deutscher Reeder: The German Shipowners Association), and the Verein der Freunde und Förderer der HSBA (association of friends and sponsors of HSBA). The funding is awarded to particularly gifted applicants who qualify for fi nancial assistance. Only the scholarship of HSBA and the German Shipowners association has allowed me to join the MBA Shipping programme. I very much enjoyed the unique group experience in this multinational group. 14 Application and admission MBA Shipping HSBA admission process Applications can be submitted at any time. Because HSBA awards a limited number of study places each year, we recommend that applications are submitted as early as possible. Admission requirements Two years of management experience. Ability to complete a course of studies in English (minimum level: B2 of the European Framework of Reference). Academic requirements - A completed third-level degree covering 240 ECTS credits and the minimum grade good. or - a degree covering 210 (180) ECTS credits with the minimum grade good supplemented by one (two) additional year(s) of professional experience or third-level training. or - passing the Entrance Exam: Applicants without a completed third-level degree but with at least six* years of relevant professional experience (e.g. Schifffahrtskaufmann) are admitted under certain conditions and can be accepted onto the entrance exam. The entrance exam comprises a written paper, a 30-minute oral exam and a two-hour written exam. The written paper deals with a management topic. The paper must be 10 to 15 pages long and has to be submitted within four weeks. The entrance exam takes place after the Admission Day. How to apply Step 1: Written application Applications for the course must be made in writing (via preferred). Applications must include: Letter of motivation CV Copies of certificates including transcript of records and diploma supplement Letter of recommendation from a current or former employer or an academic reference. Step 2: Telephone interview After reviewing the documents, a 30-minute telephone interview takes place to discuss the student s motivation and qualifications. Step 3: Admission day Admission day runs for one day and involves an indepth assessment of the applicant s personal and academic suitability. It takes place once a month in Hamburg and is held in English. Step 4: Acceptance The applicant is informed in writing of the vote by the admission board. If there are still places available, a study contract is offered. If there are no places left, a place for the following year is offered. Step 5: Signing the contract A place is reserved on the course for the applicant after he/she has signed the contract.
