From shares to bonds to funds (portfolio management) up to derivatives and certificates the most important financial products and services are analysed. Modern Financial Risk Management is the main content of the third module. 18 Studying at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics Photo: Stefan Malzkorn we attach a great deal of importance when selecting our teaching staff to the interplay of academic excellence and many years of professional experience in well-known companies. Learn theory and methods Discuss and understand Apply in company Reflect theory Employability approach HSBA s study programmes are geared to the needs of practice and open up excellent career opportunities. Our graduates have a solid basis in business administration and are quickly in a position to respond to professional change. Value approach Excellence Commitment Fairness. Our Values. Your Success. HSBA is designed on the basis of this overarching motto. In our guiding principles, we have undertaken to observe the values and the model of the honourable merchant. Issues concerning business ethics are incorporated in the study programmes as an overlapping topic. Duality approach HSBA s academic approach follows the fundamental principle of duality: combining a challenging theoretical study programme with practical professional experience. Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the lectures and apply these in practice. Based on the experiences at the company, the knowledge acquired is then discussed, reflected upon and continuously expanded on in the lectures. In order to ensure the sustained transfer of scientific theory to company practice, International approach Internationality is an essential component of a balanced course offering, particularly in Hamburg, a city that sees it self as the gateway to the world. HSBA considers the international nature of the course contents to be vital, offering a wide range of study programmes and events in English as well as encouraging study abroad. The share of international students on our master s programmes is 35 per cent on average, with more and more exchange students coming to study at HSBA. 18
19 Studying at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics Network approach HSBA maintains close connections with a large number of institutions in Hamburg and around the world. Our partner companies are at the core of our strong corporate network, flanked by the association of friends and sponsors of HSBA, the HSBA Alumni Association and our international partner universities. Excellent study conditions The bright and friendly atmosphere of our campus provides students with the best conditions for learning. Our study groups with generally no more than 30 participants facilitate productive discussions and work. All of the (compulsory) literature, databases and journals relevant are available in the HSBA library. Students benefit from the location of HSBA in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the city hall, the Chamber of Commerce with the Commerzbibliothek and the ZBW [German National Library of Economics]. Studying in Hamburg As a seaport, Hamburg is an important location for logistics and foreign trade as well as a leading financial centre in Germany. It is also home to many advertising and multimedia agencies, media companies and cultural institutions. In addition, Hamburg is synonymous with aircraft and vehicle construction and is an important location for the health sector and has a well-developed basic industry. This mix of economic potential and a good quality of life makes Hamburg one of Europe s most dynamic business regions. With the Inner Alster lake in the centre of the city, countless parks and green spaces, its proximity to two oceans, a large range of diverse leisure activities and excellent shopping areas, Hamburg is one of the top ten city destinations in Europe and a popular place to live and study. The high quality of life is also due to the fact that Hamburg is one of the safest cities in the world. Photo: Karin Rose 19

The JOB & MASTER programme HSBA s JOB & MASTER programme is a free placement service for applicants looking for a study place who wish to combine challenging academic and professional development. Many companies that work together with HSBA value the highly trained applicants from different specialist areas and the possibilities for further education provided by HSBA s MBA programme. The programme is aimed primarily at candidates for the M.Sc. in Global Management and Governance. In special cases MBA candidates may enter the programme, especially if they do not live in Hamburg and are looking for a new professional challenge. The JOB & MASTER selection process The candidates apply to the JOB & MASTER programme with their written application to the master s programme. The personal and professional suitability for JOB & MASTER is assessed during the three-stage HSBA admission process. If the candidate assessed is suitable and accepted onto the study programme, the placement process starts immediately. The applicant s profile is made accessible to a large number of companies via our candidates catalogue. Additionally, he/she is also matched to one of the job profiles advertised or can apply directly to our partner companies. If necessary, HSBA can also support each applicant individually by preparing non-solicited applications. Companies arrange an in depth job interview with suitable candidates.
