4 Study course overview Executive MBA THE EXECUTIVE MBA is perfect for practitioners from a wide range of academic backgrounds who wish to enhance their skills profile. With its generalistic approach, a broad range of business administration theory as well as relevant economic and legal topics are covered. This applied study programme in particular focuses on leadership, strategy and international management. A study week abroad in Dubai is integrated into the study course and offers the unique opportunity to deeper evaluate the intercultural aspects of the global economy. The Executive MBA is built around the concept of the honourable merchant ( Ehrbarer Kaufmann ), whose entrepreneurial dealings lead to success in business while also assuming social responsibility. The programme is therefore geared towards corporate management and leadership. 6 Course structure and guiding principles Executive MBA Master s Thesis (Area of Choice) First year Second year Entrepreneurship & 9 Innovation 10 Corporate Responsibility & 7 8 Corporate Communication Ethics, Compliance & 5 Dispute Resolution 6 Decision Making & 3 Economic Behaviour 4 Turnaround Management: 1 2 Introductory Case Study Going Global: Concluding Case Study Financial Management International Accounting & Governance International Strategic Management Leadership & Human Resource Management Internationality Business Ethics Governance Course structure 90 ECTS must be acquired over the course of the Executive MBA. The overlapping topics of internationality, business ethics and governance are incorporated in the modules and analysed in the respective context. The degree concludes with a four-month master s thesis. Guiding principles Three overarching principles form the backbone of the course: Internationality Business Ethics Governance In the individual modules, the topics covered are also always looked at from the perspective of these three guiding principles. This means that international or intercultural aspects are taken into account in the lectures, for example when discussing the special aspects of international personnel management or the role of global financial markets. In light of HSBA s special focus on values, business ethics aspects are always considered, with a central role accorded to the model of the honourable merchant. In order to discuss the options for managing companies, governance is a core aspect of teaching. Students should learn to assess and apply various institutional alternatives for action in the respective areas of business. This puts the students in a position where they can make conscious and informed decisions even in critical situations. 6

12 Studying at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics Photo: Stefan Malzkorn attach a great deal of importance when selecting our teaching staff to the interplay of academic excellence and many years of professional experience in well-known companies. Learn theory and methods Discuss and understand Apply in company Reflect theory Employability approach HSBA s study programmes are geared to the needs of practice and open up excellent career opportunities. Our graduates have a solid basis in business administration and are quickly in a position to respond to professional change. Value approach Excellence Commitment Fairness. HSBA is designed on the basis of this overarching motto. In our guiding principles, we have undertaken to observe the values and the model of the honourable merchant. Issues concerning business ethics are incorporated in the study programmes as an overlapping topic. Duality approach HSBA s academic approach follows the fundamental principle of duality: combining a challenging theoretical study programme with practical professional experience. Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the lectures and apply these in practice. Based on the experiences at the company, the knowledge acquired is then discussed, reflected upon and continuously expanded on in the lectures. In order to ensure the sustained transfer of scientific theory to company practice, we International approach Internationality is an essential component of a balanced course offering, particularly in Hamburg, a city that sees it self as the gateway to the world. HSBA considers the international nature of the course contents to be vital, offering a wide range of study programmes and events in English as well as encouraging study abroad. The share of international students on our master s programmes is 35 per cent on average, with more and more exchange students coming to study at HSBA. 12
13 Studying at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics Network approach HSBA maintains close connections with a large number of institutions in Hamburg and around the world. Our partner companies are at the core of our strong corporate network, flanked by the association of friends and sponsors of HSBA, the HSBA Alumni Association and our international partner universities. Excellent study conditions The bright and friendly atmosphere of our campus provides students with the best conditions for learning. Our study groups with generally no more than 30 participants facilitate productive discussions and work. All of the (compulsory) literature, databases and journals relevant are available in the HSBA library. Students benefit from the location of HSBA in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the city hall, the Chamber of Commerce with the Commerzbibliothek and the ZBW [German National Library of Economics]. Studying in Hamburg As a seaport, Hamburg is an important location for logistics and foreign trade as well as a leading financial centre in Germany. It is also home to many advertising and multimedia agencies, media companies and cultural institutions. In addition, Hamburg is synonymous with aircraft and vehicle construction and is an important location for the health sector and has a well-developed basic industry. This mix of economic potential and a good quality of life makes Hamburg one of Europe s most dynamic business regions. With the Inner Alster lake in the centre of the city, countless parks and green spaces, its proximity to two oceans, a large range of diverse leisure activities and excellent shopping areas, Hamburg is one of the top ten city destinations in Europe and a popular place to live and study. The high quality of life is also due to the fact that Hamburg is one of the safest cities in the world. Photo: Karin Rose 13

15 Mentoring programme of the Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns zu Hamburg STUDENTS ON THE EXECUTIVE MBA benefit in particular in their personal and professional development from a special mentoring programme involving members and partners of the Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns zu Hamburg e.v. (VEEK), i.e. the Honourable Society of Hamburg Merchants. VEEK embodies typical Hanseatic values that have helped merchants in Hamburg to trade and offer services successfully for centuries and that are still just as relevant in today s business world. Experienced entrepreneurs affiliated to VEEK support and accompany the EMBA students on their path to the management levels of business as personal mentors. This gives them a unique opportunity to benefit from the vast wealth of experience and networks of Hamburg s entrepreneurs in addition to an excellent course of studies. Experience is a good navigator in finding the right path to success in the jungle of networks, competitive pressure, job offers, information and media. In the mentoring process, I see myself as a navigation device that indicates a path. But it is the mentee who ultimately steers the course. Minou Tikrani, Managing Director of Konstruktiv PR- Beratungs gesellschaft mbh, Mentor and Board Member of VEEK The students take part in the VEEK programme for personal development and benefit from the mentoring offerings of the VEEK members. In addition, among other things they are permanent guests of the VEEK for the duration of their course and can attend its events. As a mentor for the master s programme, I am personally committed to passing on my experience to the mentees and to supporting them in their personal and professional development. 16 Course fees and funding Special offerings for students and companies Course fees The course fees are EUR 26,250 for the 24-month programme including exam fees for applications received prior to 31 May (i.e. including an early bird discount of 12.5 per cent, otherwise EUR 30,000). The course fees include the mentoring programme as well as participation in extracurricular events. The excursion to Dubai is not included. The tuition fees may be tax deductible. The JOB & MASTER programme HSBA s JOB & MASTER programme is a free placement service for applicants looking for a study place who wish to combine challenging academic and professional development. Many companies that work together with HSBA value the highly trained applicants from different specialist areas and the possibilities for further education provided by HSBA s EMBA programme. Scholarships and funding programmes HSBA also awards several full and part scholarships each year to cover the course fees for example together with the VDI ( Verband Deutscher Ingenieure : Association of German Engineers), Commerz Collegium zu Altona (a traditional association of businesspeople in the Hamburg district of Altona) and the Verein der Freunde und Förderer der HSBA (an association of HSBA sponsors). The funding is awarded to particularly gifted applicants who require and qualify for financial assistance. Financial assistance amounting to between 25 and 50 per cent and in individual cases even 100 per cent of the course fees can be awarded. Student loans are also available with special terms and conditions from banks cooperating with HSBA. Assistance from the employer The study programme is designed to train students for management tasks in companies and to lay the foundations for successful cooperation. This is attractive to students and companies alike, which is why many employers support their employees both in financial terms and by granting additional free time for the EMBA programme. The programme is aimed primarily at candidates for the M.Sc. in Global Management & Governance. In special cases EMBA candidates may enter the programme, especially if they do not live in Hamburg and are looking for a new professional challenge. The JOB & MASTER selection process The candidates apply to the JOB & MASTER programme with their written application to the master s programme. The personal and professional suitability for JOB & MASTER is assessed during the three-stage HSBA admission process. If the candidate assessed is suitable and accepted onto the study programme, the placement process starts immediately. The applicant s profile is made accessible to a large number of companies via our candidates catalogue. Additionally, he/she is also matched to one of the job profiles advertised or can apply directly to our partner companies. If necessary, HSBA can also support each applicant individually by preparing non-solicited applications. Companies arrange an in-depth job interview with suitable candidates. The quality of the professors, together with the networking possibilities, the familiar atmosphere and the personalised attention create the perfect combination for making HSBA the business school of choice for German and international students.
