Advancing Community College Students: Leveraging & Learning from National Initiatives Bogusia Wojciechowska, Dean of Professional Studies, Bunker Hill Community College, Boston Karl Kiser, Undergraduate, BHCC & UMass Boston Kathryn Kailikole, Director, Louis Stokes Institute, Council for Opportunity in Education Roshonda DeGraffenreid, recent alumnus, Holyoke Community College & Mount Holyoke College, Mass. Moderator: Deborah Boisvert, CAITE Co PI, UMass Boston
Several public and private philanthropic efforts are targeted at increasing community colleges students success and transfer to four year degree programs. Panelists will share their experiences with these efforts and suggest ways BPC projects might leverage them. What national efforts & funding are happening to advance students in CCs? (Lumina Foundation, Achieving the Dream, TRIO, NSF ATE, LSAMP, Jack Kent Cooke, etc.) How are these national efforts being leveraged to work w/ BPC goals? How might they be better leveraged? What does it take to coordinate a BPC project with these efforts? What emphasis is being put on STEM or IT/Computing in these efforts? What are students experiences of these programs? What was helpful in your CC 4 year transfer experience? What worked, what didn t work so well? What else is needed?

CAITE (Commonwealth Alliance for Information Technology Education NSF) The University of Massachusetts Amherst is leading a Commonwealth Alliance for Information Technology Education (CAITE) to design and carry out comprehensive programs that address under representation in information technology (IT) education and the workforce. CAITE will focus on women and minorities in groups that are underrepresented in the Massachusetts innovation economy; that is, economically, academically, and socially disadvantaged residents. Supports ICT Careers Days held at UMass Boston; high schools students & industry partners attending, information sessions for Guidance counselors. Supports Peer mentoring and Facilitated Study Groups for specific courses in the CS and ASIT transfer programs. Funded start up work for the IT Academy. Funds publication of materials. BPS Feb
CFATE (Computer Forensics Advanced Technology Education NSF) This project is a regional collaboration of four community colleges and one university, to meet the regional need of law enforcement for trained computer forensics (CF) technicians. The programs uniquely combine the disciplines of Information Technology (IT) and Criminal Justice (CJ) and are tailored to the needs of each institution. Offers courses and programs for IT professionals and CJ practitioners. Offers regional professional development opportunities for educators to develop expertise needed for teaching these programs. 13 CPATH/ASSECT (Advancing the Successful IT Student through Enhanced Computational Thinking NSF) ASSECT brings together community colleges and universities in five regions Bunker Hill Community College and University of Massachusetts Boston in Massachusetts, Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University in Virginia, Ivy Tech Community College and Purdue University in Indiana, Cameron University in Oklahoma and City College of San Francisco and California State Monterrey in California. The ASSECT partners will embark on a threeyear project to revitalize undergraduate computing education. The outcome will be the production of core computing concepts, methodologies, frameworks, and tools that can be applied across a variety of institutions and inform teaching and learning in undergraduate computing in a variety of environments. Looks at new options for transferring from twoyear to four year in the IT arena. Develops articulation agreements with area High Schools for a option for students Focuses on the integration of Computational Thinking (a traditional Computer Science methodology) into the Information Technology space. The hope is that this will bring to courses such as networking, security and a different approach to the teaching of problem solving. BPS Feb
SYNERGY Brings multiple perspectives on the diffusion of innovation and achieving scale into focus for educators and to provide the opportunity to explore ways they can leverage good work for even greater impact within the ATE Program. The Synergy effort is providing all of NSF ATE grantees a methodology to bring their programs to scale. We will be using the Synergy Process to package the HS Tech Apprentice program called Tech Apprentice in a Box for other school districts to adopt. The Bridge to Community College is providing the logistics, the how to's, for the introductory Computer applications and concepts course. The Bridge to Community College is also providing adult learners the opportunity to take two creditbearing courses, Computer Essentials and Introduction to Information Technology, accompanied by extensive tutoring in math and language skills designed to improve Accuplacer scores.
