WHY COME TO NEW COLLEGE? For some pupils at schools without sixth forms, college is generally the next step. If your school does have a sixth form, you don t automatically have to stay on there - going to college can provide a whole range of opportunities and benefits that you never knew existed. We regularly enrol large numbers of students from all schools with and without sixth forms in Swindon and the local area and beyond. Greater choice At college there s a choice of courses at all levels from Entry Level through to Level 3 and University Level and to suit all abilities. There s also a far wider range of subjects on offer than schools. Greater independence Whilst staying on in the same environment may suit some students, others prefer the greater independence that college can provide. There s no uniform (unless your course choice requires appropriate professional dress), you can call tutors by their first names and you are treated like an adult. With that greater independence, comes the responsibility of ensuring that you maintain effort, attendance and behaviour. A bridge between school and university or your first job Studying at New College can be a great bridge between school and university or your first job. The combination of greater independence, more freedom and opportunities available within a safe and secure environment with support on hand, can help your personal development and ease the transition to university or the world of work. Advice, guidance and support at every step of the way The advice and support doesn t stop as soon as you enrol but continues throughout your time here. You ll get advice on your courses and progression, career, university and job destinations from both teaching and support staff across college. Our personal tutorial system provides both one-to-one support and group tutorials, whilst our Student Services Team provides advice and support on a range of other issues to help you overcome any barriers to your success. 07

Choosing New College over your sixth form We advise you to consider all post-16 options available to you to find the place where you are most likely to enjoy your course and be successful. Here are some key questions to think about as you explore and compare your school with other providers:- Do they publish results and success rates for every course? Do they have special initiatives for gifted and talented students? Are there opportunities to engage with employers and develop my employability skills? Do they offer me impartial information, advice and guidance about my post-16 study options? Do they offer a wide range of courses for me to do what I want to do? Are there vocational courses as well as academic ones on offer? Can I stay on one site to complete my studies? Do they have proven quality and experience in teaching at A Level/Level 3? Are there progression opportunities available? Do they publish progression and destination statistics to higher level courses, universities and jobs? New College Swindon can answer yes to all of these questions and more. Few schools can match the scope and quality of our provision. If they have a new sixth form and therefore limited experience of delivering A levels, does their performance at KS4/GCSEs indicate that they will perform well at KS5/A Levels? Will I be treated more independently than I was when I was in Key Stage 4? Can they offer me support services like personal tutors, counselling, bursaries, chaplaincy, and nurses? Will I be able to get on courses if I don t get high enough GCSE grades? Can I do additional courses or qualifications to make my university application form or CV stand out? Are there top-rate specialist facilities for me to learn and be taught in? Can they meet my additional learning support needs? 08

For some areas, we have progression pathways where you can enter at Level 2, progress to Level 3 and then take an HND or foundation degree with us. We will always commit to running two-year programmes but delivery styles may change. Which level is best for me? Take a look at your expected (or actual) GCSE grades and compare them with the table below. Don t worry if you are between two levels - you can apply for courses from both. This table is only a guide to our general entry requirement. It does not cover all the possibilities - we will advise you at your Guidance interview. 22 Changes to A Levels from 2015 As a result of recent Government consultation on A Level reform, changes are being made to certain A level courses from September 2015 onwards. Currently students take an AS qualification in their first year of study and then can choose to study an A2 component in their second year to make up the full A Level. New A Levels will now be linear so that assessment of a student s knowledge and understanding of the whole course takes place at the end of two years. The new reformed A-levels will not include AS Level qualifications. New AS Levels will be standalone qualifications, designed to offer breadth of curriculum. The marks from them will not contribute to an A Level grade and AS Levels will broadly remain at their current standard. Students should note that the UCAS tariff points for these qualifications for university entry will also be changing and should check the UCAS website at for up-to-date details. A Levels are being reformed in two initial phases. 23 technical baccalaureate measure In April 2013, the Government announced the introduction of the Technical Baccalaureate (Tech Bacc) Measure which recognises the highest level of technical training. This new measure will recognise the achievement of students taking Level 3 programmes which include an approved Tech Level, Level 3 Maths and an extended project. The measure starts from September 2014 with reporting of achievement in the 2016 performance tables. There will be three elements to the Tech Bacc: 2. Level 3 core Mathematics qualification, including AS Level Mathematics For the Tech Bacc measure, students will need to complete a Level 3 maths qualification. This will include AS/A Levels in Mathematics. New Level 3 Core Maths qualifications are also being developed and piloted from September STEM technicians (e.g. lab technicians, IT technicians, various engineering technician roles, construction professionals) Service technicians (e.g. retail and hospitality management, personal services, junior accounting positions) Creative technicians (e.g. digital media, other media, creative industries, sport industry, textiles, design) 3. Extended Project This will develop and test students skills in extended writing, communication, research, and self-discipline and selfmotivation. The extended project component also gives students the opportunity to undertake research projects with an industry-focus, relevant to their vocational programme. It will encourage them to explore further aspects of the occupational area and equip them with a breadth of knowledge and understanding to strengthen their employability. 1. Level 3 vocational qualification Further details on which vocational qualifications will be included in the Technical Baccalaureate (Tech Bacc) Measure will be announced in due course by the Government but are likely to be most suitable for young people interested in occupations that require significant theory and technical knowledge acquisition, such as:- Details of the Tech Level qualifications which will count towards the Tech Bacc measure can be found at gov.uk/government/publications/vocational-qualificationsfor-14-to-19-year-olds 21 23

help when you need it We want you to feel fully supported during your time at College. Our Student Services Team, working alongside your tutor, can provide advice on a number of support issues to help you to succeed. Sources of advice include: Your Tutor Your tutor should be the first person you go to for advice on any issues. He or she will keep you up to date with College matters, cover some important life skill issues in group sessions, help you through the UCAS or job application process, and provide advice on overcoming any individual barriers to your success in College. Enrichment Coordinator We like students to get fully involved in College life. If you want to get involved or have any suggestions about how to improve student life, talk to the Enrichment Coordinator. College Counsellors Counsellors in College are here to help if you have any personal problems that affect your learning. They will listen and support you and the service is confidential. The Just Ask Team The team provides information, guidance and solutions on a wide range of issues as well as helping you get back on track with your learning programme. Additional Support If you have a medical condition, physical or sensory impairment, learning differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Autistic Spectrum Condition or any other learning needs, our Additional Support Team can help you. We provide services including one-to-one teaching, support in class, computer programmes and specialist equipment. We work closely with other services to make sure your needs are met. It s important to tell us early on if you had special examination arrangements at school - e.g. use of a laptop or extra time. We can make similar arrangements for you. We have a social curriculum for students with Autistic Spectrum Conditions which enables ASC learners to have a greater awareness of their learning difference and how it affects the social world they live in. It aims to help ASC students to become more effective contributors and communicators. Exploring ways to deal with stress and anxiety are essential in order to establish emotional resilience for life and workplace. You can discuss your needs before you start your programme - please let us know on your application form or at your interview. Our Transition Project Team will help you to make a smooth transition from your current school to New College. Project Mentors are available to provide advice and guidance to you in your school, or you can visit New College to get to know the building and facilities. For more information, contact Sarah Howes (Additional Support Manager) at: sarah.howes@newcollege.ac.uk Safeguarding Team All members of staff have regular safeguarding training. We have a group of staff who have additional training to support students who are concerned about their own safety. Careers and Higher Education Advice Your tutor can help you to choose a career or university course. The College s Careers Advisers can provide extra advice to help you decide your best route into work or university. 26

Exams and Assessments Our Exams Team will provide you with information and advice about your exams and other external assessments along with your subject lecturers. IMPORTANT - If you are joining New College part way through a qualification e.g. you have completed AS Levels elsewhere, you must see our exams team in your first few weeks to ensure your qualifications are correctly combined. Childcare If you have children, there are funds to help you with childcare costs while you are studying at College, depending on your age and circumstances. For more details, please contact Student Services. You can receive funds to use any registered child minder or nursery. Imagine Co-operative Childcare is an independent purpose-built nursery located behind New College. It is open from 8:00am to 6:00pm, and offers flexible childcare for children aged 3 months to school age. Call for more information. Our Chaplaincy Our multi-faith Chaplaincy Team can support you with information and advice on faith issues and can be a friendly listening ear at times of personal loss or difficulty. They have links to local faith communities in Swindon. Accessibility All our buildings and facilities are available to students. We have resources to improve accessibility, including reserved parking and lifts to all areas of the main building and Sports Centre. We also have an entry on Disabled Go at www. disabledgo.com. Details can be found in our Accessibility Advice leaflet - please ask for a copy. Or view it on our website at 27

student life Being a student at New College is about so much more than getting qualifications. You will have the opportunity to get involved in enjoyable and worthwhile activities, make new friends, develop yourself and have a great time. N-SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO... Student Voice It s really important that you get involved in New College life and have your say on what matters to you, the student. N-SEE Student Forum: A weekly group that represents fellow students on a range of issues and act as direct contact for all students. This student forum actively represents students all year round and two members are our Student Governors. N-SEE Student Conferences: Three events each year which gather students views on a variety of topics to help improve College life. Student reps are nominated at the start of the year for this event. N-SEE Student Ambassadors: These students are interviewed to be part of a group who support College events such as Open Days and Parents Evenings as well as representing the College at local school promotional events. Your views are very important to us and involvement in these groups gives you the opportunity to provide us with feedback. You are also likely to be asked to complete questionnaires and surveys and take part in quality circles, focus groups and other initiatives - for example opinion walls. Your views help us to improve how we meet YOUR needs. Events N-SEE Events Team - We run an events team who meet regularly to organise a range of events and College trips for students. This group are key in organising and making decisions on what students would like to take part in throughout the year. N-SEE Events run some of the following events, trips, and theme weeks to enhance the social experience for all students: New College Has Talent! This popular annual competition seeks to find the most talented student performers across the College. Former winners include Jahmene Douglas who came runner up in 2012 s X Factor and is now set for a great music career. Murder Mystery Event - an exciting Who Dunnit? performance organised and acted by students is a sell-out event. All About You Week - taking place in early Autumn, this event gives new and existing students the chance to sign up for extras courses and activities, meet new friends and have fun! The week incorporates a Freshers Fayre and Volunteering Day. Fun Days - these are all about relaxing and letting your hair down and include giant inflatables, BBQs and other activities. Raising and Giving (RAG) Students and staff raise money for a range of charities; the College s official charity is Prospect Hospice and we raised 5000 in RAG Week - in November, students hold their dedicated Raising and Giving week, with activities such as cake sales, mini fairgrounds, tug of war and bucket soakings. Charities benefitting included Help for Heroes, Water Aid, Naomi House, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children In Need. Kenya Project For the last 4 years students have been volunteering every July in a two week trip to Nakuru Kenya, undertaking community work with local children, coaching and building and renovation work. The difference these trips have made with the schools that we help and with the students that take part has been life changing. Students can sign up for this trip in September/October. 28
