SPRING 2013 SPRING 2014 Foyer Oxford Homelessness is on the rise in WA. With an increasing incidence of family breakdown, the number of young people who find themselves homeless or at risk is alarmingly high. Experience has shown us that short term accommodation solutions for young people are not enough and they are likely to revert to their previous living arrangements. To address this problem, in March 2014, in conjunction with Central Institute of Technology and Foundation Housing, Anglicare WA launched the State s first Foyer centre in Oxford Street, Leederville. Based on the successful international Foyer model, Foyer Oxford provides young people with self-contained transitional housing for up to two years, combined with personalised social supports and opportunities to access employment, education and training. The Foyer Oxford consortium has been running a small scale Interim Foyer in Mount Lawley since September This enabled the consortium to establish and trial the program s practices to ensure they were of the highest quality. The results from the Interim Foyer are incredibly encouraging and indicate that 78% of young people engage in education, employment and training and 75% exit into long term, positive accommodation options. Applications to become a resident are reviewed by a panel of experienced youth care professionals. Only those who demonstrate an ability to succeed in independent housing and make a positive contribution to the facility will become residents. Young people selected for the Foyer will not be straight off the streets, they will be people who have started to turn their lives around and many of them will have already benefitted from support services. All new residents will be on probation for their first few months during which time they must demonstrate a formal commitment to education or training, meet obligations of a formal lease, and engage with support staff before they can become a permanent part of the Foyer Oxford community. Foyer Oxford will continue to support residents after they have left the Foyer. Enabling the support programs and education options has been a unique 50% per cent cocontribution between BHP Billiton and the State Department of Child Protection and Family Services. BHP Billiton has committed $5 million across five years towards the Foyer Oxford project. BHP Billiton volunteers have already been involved in Foyer Oxford by assisting staff to set up Foyer apartments making them homely and welcoming, and have helped run Christmas in July for residents. Foyer Oxford has capacity to house up to 98 young people, including up to 25 young parents and their children, and some young people living with a disability. Since the launch in March, Foyer is already home to 60 residents.
This Issue Foyer Oxford CEO s Message 2014 Corporate Winter Breakfast The Peet Op Shop Ball for Corporate Partnerships Opportunities CEO s Message Our aspiration for everyone to have healthy relationships and to live within connected communities challenges us to do better. Many of the problems in our society can be attributed to the breakdown of relationships within the family setting, and within our communities. Getting alongside fellow Western Australians to support them in building strong and healthy relationships is central to our work. builds capacity and resilience in people to see them through the tough times. We are not about short term fixes more about helping people to deal with their core issues and get them back in control of their lives for the long term. Some of our services rely on voluntary donations. Examples include Street Connect and Young Hearts, which are featured in this newsletter. Through these services we are connecting with hard to reach people in our society, and helping to provide the support and opportunities they deserve. Thank you to everyone who supports our work - whether through donations, fundraising, promotion of our services, or volunteering. You are helping us with our mission to support people from surviving to thriving. Ian Carter AM Chief Executive Officer Young Hearts School Support Get Involved with 2014 Corporate WINTER APPEAL Winter 2014 Breakfast On June 13, held its Corporate Winter Breakfast at the Hyatt Regency in Perth. Our guest speaker was Federal Minister for Finance, the Hon Mathias Cormann. Senator Cormann addressed 200 guests on topics such as the justreleased federal budget and he gave his insight into how the budget was prepared and what the future might hold for the economy of Western Australia.
The Peet Op Shop Ball for The eighth annual Peet Op Shop Ball for took place on 5 April, 2014 at Crown Perth to raise money for s vital services. Over 800 guests attended. Everybody looked fantastic and there were countless memorable outfits, from past decades and wedding dresses to pyjamas and kilts all purchased from various Op Shops. Samantha Jade, winner of The X Factor Australian series, headlined the live entertainment. Her performance had the crowd singing and dancing into the early hours of the morning. The night was a huge success, with the Suitcase of Hope initiative raising $64,000 and raising $395,000 in total, with all the profits going toward s various programs. Each Suitcase of Hope helps provide a Western Australian with support, security and, most importantly, hope for the future. Money raised through this years Suitcase of Hope has been allocated to s ARBOR program, which supports people who have lost loved ones to suicide. Bereavement due to suicide is a deeply shocking experience, particularly for children. The extra funding for this program means that more children affected by suicide are given access to specialist counsellors who help kids express their grief and find ways to cope so that they can rebuild and move on with their lives. We cannot do it alone and each donation allows to continue assisting families and individuals facing difficult times. Tables are on sale now for the 2015 Peet Op Shop Ball for, to be held on March 21, 2015 at Crown Perth. For enquires and bookings please contact s Events Coordinator on
Corporate Partnerships Opportunities Companies can partner with in many different ways, including pro bono work, corporate donations, corporate sponsorship, payroll giving, employee fundraising and volunteering. We are keen to build on the support from our existing corporate partners, to enable more companies to benefit from the synergy that comes from working in partnership with. For more information, please contact Mark Henderson, Fundraising and Partnerships Manager, on Staff at Crown Perth have again supported Anglicare WA s Winter Appeal by donating goods including food, toiletry packs, toys, books, blankets and many other items. The goods were delivered to s Emergency Relief in Balga for distribution to those in need. Mark Henderson and Elizabeth Watson from were at Crown Perth to accept the donation and thank the staff on Tuesday 22 July. appreciates the generous support of David Alder and the clients of Alder & Partners who recently contributed to our Winter Appeal. Street Connect is an amazing service. It makes life-changing connections with homeless and at-risk young people, who would otherwise find themselves without any support. Our trained youth workers meet these young people offering guidance and support from the Street Connect Bus. would like to extend our thanks to Garden City Booragoon for their Jeans For A Cause collection from 26 May to 15 June Garden City collected unwanted jeans and donated them the for sale in our Op Shops. A total of 856 pairs of jeans were donated and in addition $ was raised in donations.
Young Hearts The early years of a child s life are critical to their development. Sadly, not all children grow up in a happy, loving and supportive environment. Some children endure an angry, violent or abusive upbringing which impacts their social skills, confidence and emotional maturity. Young Hearts is a children s domestic violence counselling service provided by. The Young Hearts program aims to provide a safe living environment for children, women and non-offending family members. Counselling takes place in a comfortable and secure environment to allow kids to explore their feelings and emotions surrounding family violence and abuse. provides counselling facilities equipped with the essentials so that experienced counsellors can use different styles of therapy including play, art, narrative and behavioural therapy. The Young Hearts counselling service ensures children are given access to safe, positive, supportive and helpful counselling. The service is free of charge to clients and takes place over a six week period with possible extensions if needed. Schools Support is delighted to have the support of a number of schools across WA. operates an Ambassadors Scheme for students from years 10 and 11 in a growing number of schools. The role of an Ambassador is to promote and its work within the school community, raise funds and find other ways of supporting our Street Connect program, and advocate for justice. is grateful for the support of all schools participating in the Ambassadors Scheme: Christ Church Grammar School Guildford Grammar School Hale School John Wollaston Anglican Community School Perth College Peter Carney Anglican Community School Peter Moyes Anglican Community School Swan Valley Anglican Community School St Hilda s Anglican School for Girls St Mary s Anglican Girls School In recent months, Christ Church Grammar has organised two fundraisers for Street Connect; an Op Shop Dance, and a Fashion Parade. Between the two events, the school has raised several thousand dollars for Anglicare WA s Street Connect program. Christ Church is also organising a Sleep Out for Street Connect in September. The Bright Lives Ball is an event dedicated to raising money for s Young Hearts program. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the ball will not be going ahead in However, we are starting preparation for an even bigger and brighter Bright Lives in 2015! is now relying on donations from the Western Australian community to continue operating and support children in need. Young Hearts counselling can be accessed by contacting your local office: Joondalup: Mandurah: Rockingham:
