The Davison Morley Trust was set up by Geoffrey Davison, his fiancée Judith, and friend Leslie Morley. Providing holidays for children and families, the trust relied on volunteer help. The first permanent holiday centre - Sandcastle - was opened in 1971 and the trust changed its name to Break. Other services we ve provided over the years include day services for adults with learning disabilities, which closed in 2010 after 25 years; Magpie, our first family assessment unit, which operated from 1995 until 2013; Ashcroft - a service offering support to women with mental health problems - now continued by Julian Housing; Embrace - which supported teenage parents and pregnant teenagers - and was part of Break from 2010 until 2013; Rainbow - offering holidays and short breaks to people with disabilities for 38 years until These services came to an end, were transferred to other providers, or adapted within Break to meet changing needs.

Our small family homes cater for a maximum of four children aged seven to 18 and have a social pedagogy ethos. Children and young people tell us that they feel cared for, loved and protected by our staff. Our aim is for children to experience emotional and mental well-being, to feel that they belong and are accepted. The majority of our homes are run in partnership with Norfolk County Council but we also look after young people from other Local Authorities. Break also provides, on behalf of Norfolk County Council, a four bed, full-time home for disabled young people. They live with us but have regular contact with their families as we assist them to live as independently as possible.

Break provides community based and residential assessments where we work with families at a critical point in their lives - usually when there are concerns about parents meeting the needs of their child(ren). Protection of vulnerable children is our prime focus. We promote and assess parenting skills to keep children safe and offer intensive support to parents to help achieve this. Our residential service offers self-contained family accommodation. Our community based assessments provide parents with the opportunity to remain in their home whilst their parenting capacity is assessed.

With care leavers at high risk of social exclusion, we support them to lead rich, fulfilling lives and give a hopeful future. We enable our young people to live independently and also be integrated into society. This service remains available for as long as required because we believe our care leavers should expect the level of care and support that a reasonable parent would provide. Mentoring provides individual support for young people in or leaving care. Volunteer Mentors develop non-judgemental, trusting relationships with a child or young person, and engage in supportive, purposeful activities to support and encourage positive change.

Our first shop opened in the 1970s, and we now have well over forty across East Anglia and the West Country. Without the amazing support of 600 volunteers, our shops could not operate in the way they do. We need your donations of clothes, bric-a-brac, books, CDs and DVDs, to stock our shops. Did you also know that we can take clothes and shoes that you might have thought were ready for the dustbin? Don t bin it, bring it to Break. Shopping, donating or volunteering in our shops are great ways to support Break s work. To find your nearest Break charity shop, have a look at our website. If you can t get to a Break shop, have a look online at the one on

In partnership with Norfolk County Council, Break provides two short break homes for disabled young people, aged 8 to 18, to have regular planned stays. One in South Norfolk providing a range of stays from one night up to one week. Our service in the West provides term-time, weekday boarding for six young people who attend the local special school. We run a small but expanding short break service for Great Yarmouth and Waveney CCG. Since 2013 we have provided a small residential short break holiday time service for Suffolk County Council. BATTERY BATTERY More than 60 young people receive short breaks on a regular basis.

Launched in 2012, Break s Therapeutic Fostering Service is for children aged seven to 17 who require therapeutic re-parenting. The scheme is aimed at children with attachment problems, who have had multiple placement breakdowns, exhibit emotional/ behavioural difficulties and those hard to match children who need a single placement. Our foster carers seek to understand how the child s past experiences or trauma can affect their present view of the world, their behaviours and relationships. We provide our foster carers with a high level of support, supervision, training and respite. With the right support, children and young people can reach their full potential.

Break s Learning and Development Programme offers courses for staff at all levels, with bespoke courses designed to meet organisational, team and individual training needs. The Workforce Development Team deliver training across the eastern region. Training has been commissioned by local authorities, city councils, voluntary organisations, social enterprises and private companies. In partnership with Norfolk County Council, Break has developed the Children and Young People s Workforce Diploma (CYPWD) which is delivered from a Social Pedagogical approach. Schofield House, Break s Learning and Development Centre, is available to hire for meetings and training events. Close to the centre of Norwich, it is fully equipped to meet your needs and has plenty of parking.

In 2012 Break expanded services to children and families in the community when Norwich-based charity, Families House joined us. Their established reputation for supporting families with a wide range of difficulties in Norwich and Norfolk includes support to families who are parenting apart i.e. where parents live separately. Families House has supported Norfolk families since 1994, aiming to build family resilience and strengthen family relationships; ensuring that children s needs remain paramount. Professional and volunteer support for families in Norwich Supervised and supported contact for family members Time For Me - therapeutic support for children Separated Parents Information Programme Drop-in group for parents School holiday activities Parent Support Advisers Young Carers Service Family Group Conferencing Separating Successfully

The children, young people and families we care for are not remote or theoretical. - they are very real and are part of your community. They have the same dreams, feelings, aspirations and needs that we all have. With support - yours and ours - they can experience stability, encouragement, and acceptance. Who knows what they might go on to achieve? You can help in many ways give your time, your interest, your money. Make a donation. Even better, set up a regular donation. Volunteer as a mentor, come and support Break events, get involved with fundraising, or help out in one of our shops. It really does make a difference. And don t forget to follow our patron, on Twitter and Facebook. Jake Humphrey, For more information please contact: fundraising@break-charity.org Registered Charity No
