1 Lighthouse Counseling & Family Resource Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to strengthen families and improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of residents of Placer County by providing counseling, education, and easy access to community based resources.
2 When Ms. L arrived at Lighthouse she had experienced severe domestic violence, recently leaving her abuser. She was forced to begin living with her children on the floor of a garage. Feeling depressed and overwhelmed, she had no secure housing, no bed, and no job. She had hit rock bottom. Seeing this as a turning point in her life she enrolled in services at Lighthouse, which included case management, counseling for herself and her children, employment readiness training, and budgeting workshops. She soon was awarded with a scholarship to further her education from a local service organization. She now has stable housing, a professional office job, is close to completing her degree, and her teenage child also gained employment at a respected retail store. Through hard work and the help of Lighthouse Ms. L and her family have achieved self-sufficiency and independence. Stories like Ms. L's are only one of many benefits of sponsoring Lighthouse. 8 Testimonials We help our residents stabilize housing Recently, we had a mother, father and three children sleeping in a car in Lincoln. The father came into Lighthouse for help. The Lighthouse staff not only helped the father obtain a job, but Lighthouse helped this father get his family off the street and into a safe apartment, by providing the apartment complex with the rental deposit. This father was able to sign a one year lease and with the job he obtained, he can now support his family and they are self-sufficient. We help our residents obtain medical and dental care One of our case manager s recently received a call from a woman with four children, who needed knee surgery. Though she had medical insurance, she could not schedule the knee surgery because she had 9 dental cavities that were causing her to have an infection run throughout her body. Antibiotics were ineffective, and she did not have dental insurance and could not afford dental care. Lighthouse connected her to a local dentist who offered to provide the nine fillings, free of charge. Today, she is free of infection and able to schedule her much needed knee surgery. Furthermore, with the health problems resolved, she can be present for her children again and return to work. We help our residents resolve conflict through counseling Currently, we have a couple in counseling who were physically abusing one another. They came to Lighthouse, because their children were in danger of being removed from the home due to the domestic violence. The mother had been incarcerated for hitting the father, leaving visible marks. After 12 counseling session, the couple is learning to resolve their issues in a healthy way and there is no longer any violence in the home. We help the children of this community grow and remain in school Lighthouse has been counseling an elementary school boy who was demonstrating angry behavior in the classroom, low self-esteem and struggled with abandonment issues. Through counseling, this child has begun to open up and express his emotions. He has learned some of his strengths which helped raise his self-esteem. He has also learned new problem solving skills. Today, this child is motivated to come to counseling and motivated to grow and change. However, without Lighthouse s intervention, this child might have remained in an isolated, angry world that could have prevented him from becoming the productive individual that he is capable of being.

11 For Lighthouse Counseling & Family Resource Center, 2014 was another amazing year of growth. Lighthouse grew in the following ways: We received funding from the Mental Health Services Act, allowing us to grow substantially in our Counseling Department, as well as in our Family Resource Center leading to the hire of 6 new staff members. We hosted our third Community Wellness Fair reaching hundreds of families in our area with health and human service education. We continued to work closely with the Placer County Children s System of Care and began working closely with Placer County Family Court and MDIC (the Multi-Disciplinary Interview Center of Placer County), engaging Placer s most at-risk families in Lighthouse services. We integrated our Teaching Pro-Social Skills and other services into school sites throughout Placer County. We grew our partnerships with other non-profits and service agencies, giving clients scholarships to services offered elsewhere, in order to not duplicate efforts and create community efficiency. We started utilizing social media in a greater way and re-designed our website, engaging our community in the latest and greatest events and programs that were happening internally and externally. We strengthened internal controls. We kept our administrative costs low, finalized the fiscal year with positive income and obtained a clean financial review from our outside auditors. We increased the upcoming year s budget to over $1 million for the first time. Though growth can have challenges, we ended 2014 with great success. The Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce awarded Lighthouse with the Best Non -Profit award and The Lincoln News Messenger named us Best Non- Profit, Best Office Staff, Best in Customer Service, and Best Website. To our staff and supporters, thank you! You make it possible for Lighthouse to shine brightly as we carry out our mission in integrity, ensuring people in need receive comprehensive, holistic help that truly makes a difference. 12 A Lighthouse Success Story At Lighthouse Counseling & Family Resource Center we see many families in the midst of their hardest times. No matter the circumstances, we strive to meet the needs of all who walk through our doors. In 2014, Lighthouse received into case management a homeless, single mother of two with no transportation outside of a bicycle. On the date she came in, Elaine* was less than a week away from her family living on the street. She and her children were currently staying at a hotel in Rocklin with vouchers from the County that were set to run out. Despite these challenges, Elaine biked diligently everyday from the hotel in Rocklin, to her college classes in Roseville, to her internship in Lincoln. As a first step in assisting Elaine, one of our family advocates called a local low-income apartment complex to find housing for Elaine and her family. Although the complex had a long wait list, after hearing Elaine's story, the manager got Elaine and her family into an apartment within the week. Lighthouse was also able to provide Elaine with bus passes, so she no longer had to spend hours on her bicycle every day. She was also given a "Birthday Basket" with party supplies and a Target gift card to celebrate her son's birthday, which happened to be the same day Elaine came to Lighthouse seeking help. Elaine now has stable housing and transportation, and participates in our job readiness program, using our resume writing software and other computer services regularly to help her in continuing her positive progress forward. Lighthouse continually strives to create this real and lasting change in all of our clients through our carefully chosen programs and services. * To protect the family s confidentiality, the names of the parties have been changed.
