1 Union County College Faculty Curriculum Committee New Course Proposal Form To all faculty members seeking to introduce a new course proposal to the Curriculum Committee, please make sure to complete the attached form accurately before submitting your proposal. For all new courses, please submit an electronic copy of your proposal to the Curriculum Committee Chair, with a copy to the New Course/New Program Subcommittee Chair. All new course proposals must follow these guidelines completely. If these guidelines are not followed completely, your new course proposal may be delayed in the acceptance process. Please refer to the Curriculum Committee website for all deadlines and meeting dates. Please Note: a) These guidelines for submitting new courses were taken from the Union County College Curriculum Committee By-laws found on the committee s web page, and have been changed into checklist form for easy use. b) This form must be submitted to the New Course/New Program Subcommittee chairperson with your new course proposal. c) All courses that will be offered in a Distance Learning format (Online or Blended) must be reviewed by the Academic Technology Committee and approved by the Curriculum Committee. This applies to new courses that will be offered in the Distance Learning format for the first time. The proposal for all Distance Learning Courses should be reviewed by the Academic Technology Committee (ATC) prior to being submitted to the Curriculum Committee (but reviews may be concurrent if necessary). The ATC will only review the proposal as it relates to the technology required to deliver the course. For ATC proposal procedures, please contact the Chair of the ATC. 6 UNION COUNTY COLLEGE COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER & NAME: LECTURE/LAB HOURS CIS 1xx Introduction to Medical Informatics Technology 3 Lecture Hours CREDITS 3 PREREQUISITES: None COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the student to the field of medical informatics. Students learn about health data acquisition, storage, security, and ethics. The course emphasizes the connection between computers and telecommunications technology with health care. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to: 1. Discuss the emergence of medical informatics technology and how it is influenced by ethics. 2. Identify the essential concepts of biomedical computing and professions in this field. 3. Summarize the role of computers and communications in modern biomedical research, health, and health care as it relates to IT policy. 4. Research, store, and secure electronic health record systems. 5. Evaluate medical informatics decision making technology. STUDENT RESOURCES: Biomedical Informatics: Computer Applications in Health Care and Biomedicine, 4 th ed. edited by Edward H. Shortliffe and James J. 7 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The successful completion of a tests and final exam. The completion of all in-class assignments and projects. The completion of all assigned readings and homework. Attendance and class participation. Students are required to attend all classes. See the College Attendance Policy discussed in the UCC Catalog. An essential element of this course includes information literacy. Information Literacy is the evaluation and assessment of integrated information. Students will be able to locate, discern, and effectively use information to solve issues and/or problems.
