1 1 Guidance for IA DMM: Connecting Your Computer to FSU Video File Server This guide will walk you through the process of connecting your computer to the FSU Video File Server and then uploading video files from your computer to the server. Although there are a number of steps, this process is straightforward just carefully follow the steps below. Keep in mind that the process might vary a bit depending on the operating system and browser that you are using, so don t despair if your computer deviates a bit from the steps. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Step 1 is different for PCs and Macs: on a PC you need to download and install FileZilla; on a Mac, you need to download it and then simply run it. Once you complete Step 1, everything is the same for both platforms. Step 1 For PC Computers Running Windows: Download and Install FileZilla (You will only have to do this the first time) Click on project.org/download.php or copy and paste it in your browser. Click on the green Download Now bar. If you encounter a window such as this, select Save File. Navigate to where your browser saves downloaded files, e.g. in the Downloads folder in My Documents or on your desktop. Double click on the FileZilla install file (titled SFInstaller_SFFZ_filezilla_ _).

2 2 If you encounter a window such as this, select Yes. When you arrive at this screen, choose Next. When you arrive at this screen, and others like it, keep selecting Decline unless you want to install the applications offered.

3 3 When you arrive at this screen, select whether you want to make the FileZilla application available to all users of the computer or just yourself, then select Next (for the purposes of this tutorial, Anyone was selected). NOTE: To select Anyone you need to have administrator privileges on the computer. When you arrive at this screen, make sure these items are checked (Adding a check to Desktop Icon will make the application easier to find) then select Next. When you arrive at this screen, select Next. When you arrive at this screen, select Install. The application will install.

4 4 When the application finishes installing it will display this screen. Be sure that the Start FileZilla now box is checked and then select Finish. You re ready for Step 2. Step 1 For Apple Computers: Download FileZilla (You will only have to do this the first time) Click on project.org/download.php or copy and paste it in your browser. Click on the green Download Now bar. If you encounter a window such as this, select Save File. Navigate to where your browser saves downloaded files, e.g. in the Downloads folder in My Documents or on your desktop. If the app was downloaded in a zipped (compressed) folder, simply double click on the folder to unzip the App. The app is titled FileZilla.app Double click on the FileZilla app Compressed Folder FileZilla App

5 5 Note: From this point on, the steps are the same for PCs and Macs Step 2: Log In to Filezilla (You will need to do this every time you use FileZilla) After you select Finish, the Application will open. Type in this information in the top of the program window: Host: FIVP.CCI.FSU.EDU Username: Your first name and last name with no spaces (e.g., johndoe) Password: Your password was ed to you Port number: 22 Select Quickconnect At this window select Always trust this host, add this key to the cache and select Ok. (Note: You should only need to do this the first time you log in). You are now logged in.

6 6 Step 3: Upload a Video File to the FSU Server via FileZilla (You will need to do this every time you upload a video) Now that you are logged in, review FileZilla s program window: On the left hand side of the program window is your computer. On the right hand side is the FSU File Server. The FSU Server will open up directly in your Region, and within it, your personal folder. For the purposes of this tutorial, it opened up directly in Region 1 > John Doe. Your Computer This area is the Directory Listing for the John Doe Folder FSU Server A: For the purposes of this tutorial, in the local computer a folder was created titled Videos for IA DMM. This folder resides in the My Documents folder. DMM video files to be uploaded to the FSU Video Server are stored here. B: In the Videos for IA DMM folder a video file titled Test Video File was placed. (NOTE: The icons associated with videos file will vary from file to file and computer to computer.) C: To upload the Test Video File, we simply drag and drop it from the folder on your computer (B) to the directory listing for the John Doe folder (C). NOTE: You are not actually moving the video file; you are making a copy of it on the FSU Video Server. After copying it, you will still have the video file on your computer. B A C

7 7 The green bar at the bottom of the screen will show the progress of the upload. Video files can be large, so the upload will take a while. For example, a 500 MB file might take about an hour or longer to upload; a 1 GB file might take more than two hours to upload. Because it takes so long to upload large video files, we recommend that you learn how to do basic editing and compression. By learning a few skills you will be able to join multiple clips, cut away unwanted sections, and make your video files much smaller so they won t take nearly as long to upload. Please refer to page 12 of Shoot and Share: A Quick n Dirty (but effective!) Manual for IA DMM on Using Digital Video for information about using the free application MPEG Streamclip for basic video editing and compression. Once the status bar shows that the upload has completed you can double check that it successfully uploaded by checking if you can see it in the John Doe folder s directory listing. If it s there, you re done! NOTE: For your records, please create a folder on your computer or program s server where you save all of the video files that you upload to the FSU Video Server. Step 4: Exit FileZilla (You will need to do this after every time you use FileZilla) Once you finish working in FileZilla, simply close out of the program. The next time you want to use FileZilla, doubleclick on the icon that you placed on your desktop. You will need to begin with step 2, Log In to FileZilla, so keep the Host, Username, Password, and Port number convenient (and at the same time, secure!).
