3 Panoramic of Medellin Medellín is the capital and largest city of the department of Antioquia, Colombia, and the second most populous city. It is located in the natural region known as the Aburrá Valley, in the central Andes, becoming the largest urban center in such branch of the Andean mountain range. It straddles the Medellín river which crosses from south to north, and is the core of the metropolitan area of Valle de Aburrá. The city has a population of 2,441,123 inhabitants (2014), while this figure, including the metropolitan area totals 3,731,447 people (2014). As a provincial capital, Medellin is the seat of the Government of Antioquia, the Departmental Assembly, the Superior Court of the District of Medellin Metropolitan Area and the Attorney General.
