2 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games 8.1 Overview The Pan Am/Parapan Am Games is an international multi-sport event with athletes from across Latin America, South America, the Caribbean and North America. Approximately 7,000 athletes will compete in the 2015 games. There are 36 Pan Am sports and 15 Parapan Am sports. The 2015 Pan Am Games will take place from July 10 to 26 and the Parapan Am Games will take place from August 7 to 15. Toronto is the official host of the games, while surrounding municipalities will also be involved. York Region will host two venues: at the Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre located near Kennedy Road / Enterprise Boulevard, and at the Angus Glen Golf Club located near Major Mackenzie Drive / Kennedy Road. York University, which is on the south side of the York Region / Toronto border will also be a venue. A map of the venues is shown in Figure Transit Planning for the Games Meetings are being held on an ongoing basis between the Pan Am/Parapan Am committee, Toronto 2015, Pan/Parapan America Games Secretariat, and YRT/Viva. The meetings are to ensure there is adequate transit capacity to transport athletes, families, and spectators to venues. The Pan Am/Parapan Am committee has retained a consultant to produce a model of the expected demand for each venue. The venues located in York Region and York University are currently service by transit. YRT/Viva is committed to ensuring there are minimal impacts to existing customers and customers attending the games. Customer Service and Operations staff will be available at the venues located in York Region and York University to provide customers with information and help them travel to their destinations. 150

4 Venues York University The fully accessible CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium is designed for certification by the International Association of Athletics Federations as a Class 1 track suitable for hosting Olympic and other top-tier competitions. It will have a 400-metre track and an infield that supports throwing and jumping disciplines, as well as a scoreboard, professional broadcast capabilities, athlete change rooms, equipment storage, and classroom space. Spectators in the grandstand will have an unobstructed view of the field of play, as well as the natural landscape of the campus s protected Boyer Woodlot. The stadium is building on the world-class athletics infrastructure already present at York University, including the Toronto Track & Field Centre, which will serve as an athlete training and warm-up facility during the Games. 5 Angus Glen Golf Course Angus Glen Golf Club, one of Canada s most prestigious golf courses, will host the first-ever Pan Am Games golf tournament in July The championship-level golf course has hosted the Canadian Open twice. In 2015, the Pan Am golf tournament, which includes both men s and women s events, will welcome both professional and amateur players. Sixty-four golfers will tee off in the 72-hole competition on Angus Glen s south course. The Pan Am competition will take place a year ahead of the return of golf to Olympic competition at the Rio Games for the first time in more than 100 years. The welcoming design of the 13,657 square metre (147,000 sq. feet) multipurpose centre features a glass front with splashes of colour. Inside, it boasts a triple gymnasium with approximately 3,158 square metres (34,000 sq. feet) for training, competition and community use, as well as a 10-lane, 50-metre Olympic-sized swimming pool. The 12.5-metre-high clear ceilings of the centre s field house also meet international badminton, volleyball and other sport height requirements for an ideal field of play. In addition to the athletic facilities, the centre also makes space for several all-purpose rooms, meeting areas and a twolevel fitness centre for optimal community use at the 2.4-hectare property at 16 Main St. Unionville.
