Connecting to the FILTER Virtual Private Network (VPN)

1 Create FILTER VPN Connection Filter s VPN allows computers at remote locations (e.g. home, hotels, Starbucks?) to connect directly and securely to FILTER s corporate network. Computers connected by VPNs can access most corporate resources, including , file servers and databases, in the same way that computers located at FILTER offices access those resources. Because VPNs communicate over a secure tunnel there is a fair amount of overhead on the client workstation to encrypt and decrypt the data that flows across the VPN tunnel. For this reason, it is not uncommon for computers to sometimes feel sluggish while connected using a VPN connection. Creating a VPN connection in Windows XP is not difficult, but in order to have the best experience possible, it is important that all of the following instructions be followed EXACTLY. Also, VPN connections are not recommended for use on dial-up connections. Only broadband (DSL or Cable Modem) connections will provide the amount of bandwidth needed to make the VPN connection usable. Create a VPN connection by first going to the Start menu and selecting Connect To Show all connections You will then see a screen that looks something like this:

2 Page 2 Choose Create a new connection under Network Tasks in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. This will begin a wizard that will lead you through the task of creating a VPN connection to FILTER. Make sure your settings match those shown in the next series of screen shots:

5 Page 5 After the wizard is through creating your VPN connection, it automatically takes you to the VPN login screen. From here you will need to make some additional configuration changes.

6 Page 6 From the bottom of the login screen, press Properties and then click on the Options tab. Make sure you check the box that says Include Windows logon domain Now click on the Networking tab and highlight the line that says Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Press the Properties button below it.

7 Page 7 You should now see the following screen: From here, click on the Advanced button at the lower-right and make sure the Use default gateway on remote network check box is UNCHECKED. If you do not uncheck this box, you will be using FILTER s Internet connection while connected to the VPN and there s a good chance that it will be slower than yours at home.

8 Page 8 Press OK on this and all of the other screens, login using your username, password and domain CORP and then you should be able to log into the FILTER VPN. Connecting to your FILTER Desktop Once you are connected to the FILTER VPN, you will be able to connect to the desktop located onsite at the FILTER offices. In order to do so, you will need to use Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) application to connect to your desktop. Follow the steps indicated below to connect to your desktop remotely. Go to START->Run->MSTSC and click OK.

9 Page 9 A Remote Desktop Connection window will appear like the one below: Enter your computer name and click Connect. This will start the Remote Desktop Application where you will be presented with a login window similar to the one that appears each time you sign into your computer. Sign in as you normally would and you will then be connected to your FILTER desktop.
