1 CAROLINAS COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOOL OF NURSING COURSE SYLLABUS Fall 2015 (Last revised 08/04/15) Course: Credit Hours: Placement: NUR 100, Medical Terminology 1 Semester Hour Spring / Fall Course Description: NUR 100, Medical Terminology, is designed to provide a basis for understanding of medical terms, abbreviations, and symptomatic, diagnostic, procedural, and operative terms utilized in nursing practice. These terms are used by the Associate Degree Nurse in all areas of practice including professional behaviors, communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, teaching and learning, collaboration, and managing care. Online Course Platform Requirement: This is an online course using the College Information Portal. A general college orientation to this learning platform is available in addition to the course specific orientation on the first day of class. There is an online orientation to this class that you will find on the NUR 100 page. You will be required to access the internet as well as software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Windows Media Player. Should you be unable to access these software applications from your home, you may use the Computer Resources Lab at the college to complete assignments. The College Information Portal online learning site is QUALITY ENHANCEMENT PLAN: Information Literacy In its QUEST for information literacy, the College has adapted the information literacy standards of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) (2000). The College has identified the learning outcomes below as expected skills of an information literate student. Learning outcomes that correlate to activities in this course are designated in bold type. The information literate student: 1. Determines the nature and extent of the information needed. 2. Retrieves needed information effectively. 3. Evaluates information and its sources for currency, relevancy, and reliability. 4. Uses information to accomplish a specific purpose. 5. Uses information ethically and legally. Plagiarism Carolinas College currently holds a licensing agreement for use of a plagiarism detection and prevention tool that is an electronic web-based service. The tool helps users detect and prevent plagiarism from sites and full text published internet sources. As your faculty member for this course, I may use the tool to either require you to submit your written assignments electronically for review of your own work or I may submit text from your assignments. 2 STUDENT LEARNNG OUTCOMES NUR 100, Medical Terminology At the completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Communicate human flourishing needs through the use of correct medical terminology and abbreviations. 2. Develop a professional language to integrate nursing science for the management of safe and quality care. 3. Utilize medical terminology in order to communicate and practice professionally with integrity and responsibility. 4. Understand medical terms as they are used in Evidence Based Practice to improve the quality of care for patients, families and communities. Required Resource Purchase Your Online A-V Tutorial E-Textbook at: Scientific and Medical Terminology E-Textbook: This course material is designed for degree seeking students at the Carolinas College of Health Sciences and is a student centered Online computer based classroom course. The tutorial format has an 800 page online printable textbook contains interactive audio-visual lecture pages that prepare each student for the 1000 self-testing flashcards and the 800 multiple choice self-test questions. Student Computer Technical Help (ANYTIME) Go to the E-Textbook Website and click CONTACT US on the bottom left of the Tool Bar or go to: Phone: Toll Free Required Online Access: NUR 100 College Information Portal Web Page: Grading See Carolinas College of Health Sciences Catalog/Student Handbook on CCHS website ( Numerical range for all Nursing courses will be: = A = B = C = D 69 & Below = F The lowest passing grade in the course is a letter grade of C. In order to pass NUR 100, students must receive a testing grade of 76.5% or greater, and a course grade of 77% or greater. The course is designed to provide a sequential programmed process for learning the language of healthcare. This one (1) credit ground based format is instructor guided but a participant based learning experience. Class will meet only the first week to orient to the online environment. The course web-page will have course documents and resources to guide learning. The course content will be self-paced learning with identified deadlines to complete online tests and comprehensive final exam. All tests and final exam will be completed online. Name Badges Students must display their CCHS issued name badge above the waist for every class and clinical session. Any student present without the appropriate name badge must obtain a temporary badge from the receptionist in order to remain in class as well as on CHS campus. 3 Orientation to Course To begin the course, you will need to view the power point, entitled NUR 100 Orientation. Upon completion of the power point, there is an orientation quiz(1% of grade) that is to be completed by date on the calendar. You may take this quiz as many times as you want, the highest grade achieved will be recorded in the gradebook. You are not required to take it more than once though, if you are pleased with the grade that you achieved. Evaluation Methods There will be ten (10) online tests, and a comprehensive final exam. Each of the tests will have twentyfour (24) questions completed in 10 minutes. The comprehensive final exam is cumulative and will have fifty (50) questions completed in 50 minutes. Questions for all tests and the final exam are in multiple choice format. Tests and the Final exam are completed online and must be completed by the designated date. A testing schedule will be available on the first day of class. Students who are unable to complete a test by the designated date must contact the instructor at least one (1) hour prior to the test time closing. Alternate tests may be used for make-ups tests. Failure to complete an online test by the designated date will result in a grade of zero (0) for that test. In the event that a class is canceled or the College is closed for inclement weather, the test closing date will be extended to the next open day. Once a test is completed by a student, a student has two (2) business days to submit, in writing via , any dispute to test questions. No test question(s) can be disputed once the two (2) business days have lapsed. The faculty decision regarding the dispute will be returned to the student, in writing, within five (5) additional business days and the decision will be final. After final course grades are submitted to the College Registrar, there will be no further review of any course tests/final exams by students. Calculation The course grade will consist of: Ten (10) online tests 84% Comprehensive final exam worth 15% Online Orientation Quiz 1 % 100% Exemption from Comprehensive Final Exam Students who attain a or greater Preliminary Course will be exempt from taking the Comprehensive Final Exam. Following all online tests, a Preliminary Course calculation will be done to ascertain students who will be exempt from taking the Comprehensive Final Exam. These students will be notified by the Lead Course Instructor and their Preliminary Course will be utilized as their Final Course. In order to pass NUR 100, the student must meet all of the following requirements: 1. View Orientation Power Point 2. Take the Orientation Quiz(highest grade will be recorded) 3. Achieve a final testing grade of 76.50%. 4. Achieve a course grade of 77% or greater. 5. Complete all chapter exercises for chapters 1-4 and 6-14 at 6. Complete all timed/graded chapter tests for chapters 4 and 6-14 at Accommodations for Disabilities The College will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities. 7 Carolinas College of Health Sciences Honor Code I have read the syllabus for NUR 100. I understand that I am accountable for all of the information contained in the syllabus. I have been given the opportunity to clarify any questions. It is expected that all students promote amongst themselves the highest standards of ethical conduct. Students are expected to demonstrate honesty and integrity in both the classroom and clinical setting. Each student is responsible for maintaining, upholding, and promoting honesty, trust and respect for self and others. The honor code serves as the basis for student behavior and places responsibility for abiding by the code on the student. Violation of the honor code will subject a student to disciplinary action, up to and including administrative dismissal without eligibility to be readmitted. Any person who has reasonable cause to suspect a student of violation of the honor code should report the relevant facts to the dean of student services and enrollment management. Honor Code violations include the following: A. Academic dishonesty includes the following actions and behaviors: 1. Cheating Offering, providing or accepting unauthorized support or assistance in completion of any task, project, academic assignment, or test. The use or attempted use of any unauthorized information, material, or assistance in completing any assigned task, project, assignment, or test. 2. Plagiarism Representing the ideas, language, or created work of another person or persons as one s own or as the college s own. (See Academic Integrity policy for specific definition and examples). This includes violation of copyright law. 3. Self Plagiarism/Multiple Submission Copying portions of any original assignment for credit and submitting them as original work in more than one course without prior approval of the course instructor and/or duplicating submission of a prior original work without proper citation and reference of that prior work. 4. Falsification/Fabrication Falsifying information for any reason or fabricating information, grade, data, citation, or reference or in completion of any project or academic assignment. Falsification or fraudulent alteration of academic or college records, including application for admission. 5. Complicity Collaborating in or facilitating any of the above actions or assisting in the creation of a paper, project or other creative work that another person then presents as his or her own project, assignment or test. 6. Interference Intentional interference with or alteration or destruction of another person s project, assignment, or examination. B. Clinical dishonesty includes the following actions and behaviors: 1. Having another person perform one s assignments without instructor permission. 2. Collaborating with others on assignments if contrary to stated rules. 3. Falsifying patient records or communicating false information about clinical care or clinical experiences. 4.
