The principles of nursing management, leadership, and research are applied in this special environment of the health care profession. Prerequisite: limited to students admitted to the MSN program. ISBN-13: Student Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Write a formal research paper in an APA style. 2. Write two formal critiques of peer reviewed articles identifying each type of article and including an in depth analysis of each article in relationship to nurse administration problems. 3. Conduct a formal presentation with an in depth evaluation analysis and synthesis of the managerial dilemma s within the nursing administration field. 4. Present evidence-based practice concepts in relationship to nursing administration and leadership standards

2 Measurement: All student learner outcomes must achieve a grade of 80% or above in order to be passing. 2 Course Outline Week One Overview of course Concepts and theories guiding professional practice Factors of Change, Complexity and Creativity for Nurse managers/leaders Week Two - Organization and Strategy Organizational structure and analysis Human resource development Strategic planning within nursing management/leadership; evidence-based practice Issues/Staffing and scheduling Week Three - Risk management, regulatory issues and performance appraisals Principles of budgeting for nurse managers/leaders Risk management issues Quality management and performance appraisals First Critique due Week Four Understanding Academic and clinical partnerships and evidence based principles and ethical practice for managers/leaders Changing management paradigms for clinical and academic partnerships; evidence based practice Understanding a culturally diverse workforce impact on management/leader activities The impact of ethics on practice for nursing management/leaders Second Critique due Week Five Wrap up course Managerial/leadership research paper due and presentation Culturally Diverse workforce Summation of course topics Evaluation of course Means of Evaluation 1. Discussion Board - Students will reflect, analyze and synthesize the topics offered on discussion board and post researched peer reviewed articles. They will also present their managerial research paper on the discussion board for comments and discussion with colleagues. 2. Managerial Leadership Paper guidelines will follow APA guidelines and be developed as follows:

3 3. Select a topic that you are researching related to nursing management/leadership (try to include evidence based practice concepts) and then follow the guidelines for your paper. In the process of researching and analyzing, you need to address each of the following areas. Carefully include an evaluation, analysis and synthesis within the paper plus include two paragraphs in the summary of your paper regarding evidence based practice. This paper will be 15 pages in length including all of the areas listed below Cover Sheet Abstract Introduction and purpose Historical antecedents to topic Theoretical components to topic Organizational structure and analysis of topic Strategic planning Tools for operations and health care delivery Evaluation and implementation quality management Budgeting format Summary including evidence based practice APA style Body of the paper - a minimum of 20 pages Reference pages 4. Critique of Managerial/leadership articles Critiques (2) Select two peer reviewed managerial leadership research articles. Write a seven to ten page paper for each critique. Conduct a thorough analysis and synthesis of the articles. Include statements in the summary regarding the application to evidence-based practice. Choose articles based on your managerial interest and expertise. These critiques are to be written in APA style. Include a cover sheet, abstract and reference page. Then this to your faculty person via Blackboard. Write a seven to ten pages for each critique including the following. Cover page Abstract Statement of the Phenomenon of Interest Purpose addressed within the article Analysis and synthesis of the article topic Applications to evidence based practice Conclusions and Recommendations End Summary Critiques Presentation: A discussion board presentation about the two critique articles by each student and which will be followed by a question and answer session on the discussion board. During the course of your presentation, you are to address how it might be possible to apply these research articles to evidence-based practice within the management/leadership/executive area. This will all be done via discussion board. 3

For additional information, see the university catalog. A&M-Texarkana Address: Upon application to Texas A&M University- Texarkana an individual will be assigned an A&M-Texarkana account. This account will be used to deliver official university correspondence. Each individual is responsible for information sent and received via the university account and is expected to check the official A&M-Texarkana account on a frequent and consistent basis. Faculty and students are required to utilize the university account when communicating about coursework. University Drop Policy: To drop this course after the 12 th class day, a student must complete the Drop/Withdrawal Request Form, located on the University website (http://tamut.edu/registrar/droppingwithdrawing-from-classes.html) or obtained in the Registrar s Office. The student must submit the signed and completed form to the instructor of each course indicated on the form to be dropped for his/her signature. The signature is not an approval to drop, but rather confirmation that the student has discussed the drop/withdrawal with the faculty member. The form must be submitted to the Registrar s office for processing in person, mail (P. O. Box 5518, Texarkana, TX 75505) or fax ( ). Drop/withdraw forms missing any of the required information will not be accepted by the Registrar s Office for processing. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that the form is completed properly before submission. If a student stops participating in class (attending and submitting assignments) but does not complete and submit the drop/withdrawal form, a final grade based on work completed as outlined in the syllabus will be assigned.

Principles of nurse management and Nurse Executive including information management, policy and regulation issues, risk management, evidence based practice within management. Understanding the tools for evaluation of operations and care delivery systems; quality management; performance appraisal and the professional staff Building academic and clinical partnerships with transformational leadership and evidence based practice; creating the culture for the environment; and managing a cultural diverse work force. Evaluation of course and faculty Meet and greet on discussion board. Read Chapter 1 through 6 in your textbook. Go online for discussion questions on the discussion board. Peer reviewed articles should address the topic of the week, if you post them on the discussion board. Read Chapter 7 through 12 in your textbook. Peer reviewed research articles to place on discussion board for colleague review. The articles should address week two topics. Read Chapters 13 through 15 in your textbook. First critique due by 6/16/11at 5 pm and must be placed on for colleagues to review and comment. Read Chapters 16 through 19 in your textbook. Second critique due by 6/23/11 at 5 pm and must be placed on for colleagues to review and comment. Read Chapter 20 through 23 in your textbook. Present your managerial paper on the discussion board, must be posted by 7/7/11 for colleagues review and comments. Submit managerial paper online to faculty person by 7/7/11 at 5 pm. Participation Policy (a) Students are to be prepared with addressing the discussion board topics. This preparedness will include an analysis and synthesis of the topics presented and scholarly inquiry aimed at addressing each area of the discussion. Online modules will be presented and discussion board topics will be presented for class input. Students are expected to complete the assignments within each module. Specific instructions for completing each assignment will be included within each module. (b) Students are to be responsible for their own work and when interacting online must not make any untoward comments such as profane words, personal attacks on

7 your colleagues or any type of offensive materials that would be considered as inappropriate for a graduate online level course. 7 (c) Discussion Board Standards: The student will be on the discussion board a minimum of 3 times per week or more, as needed, since this course is only five weeks you are expected to participating the minimum amount each week. Discussion board content must be complete with thorough analysis and synthesis of materials presented for discussion.
