3 GENERAL INFORMATION Enrollment Every effort will be made to accommodate maximum participation in the course of your choice. Students should complete and return registration forms indicating 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices of classes with the proper fees (No credit cards). NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED OR RESERVED OVER THE PHONE OR BY FAX!!! Confirmation cards will only be mailed for 2 nd and 3 rd choices. CLASS CHANGES WILL BE TREATED AS WALK-INS AT THE COLLEGE. Classes with insufficient registration may be cancelled prior to the College. Walk-in registrations will be accepted on site for classes with openings. Cash or checks only accepted for walk-in registration fees. NO REFUNDS AFTER September 19, 2015!! ** Attendance at all scheduled class sessions is mandatory. 7 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ** Sections 1 5 Register at to obtain a SID number for NFA classes ** *Section 1 Arson Fire Detection for First Responders (NFA Course) The first responder is often in the best position to make critical observations regarding a fire. Observations of the first responder during the various stages of an incident are extremely critical. This course will cover first responder observations, fire behavior, building construction, origin and cause, vehicle fires, scene security, preservation of evidence, legal considerations and reporting of findings. Topics covered in the course include: techniques and approaches to problem solving, assessing the needs of subordinates, running meetings effectively in the fire service environment and decision-making strategies. 9 Section 31 Fire Officer II (NC Certification) This course will present the Fire Officer Candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of the Chapter Five of the NFPA 1021: Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. This course is designed to meet the needs of the mid-level officer/supervisor. Pre-requisites: Fire Officer I. 24 hours (Friday 8:00am 9:00pm, Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am 1:00pm). Section 32 Chief 101 (NC Certification) This class will offer insight into paperwork and other issues facing today s fire departments. There will be a heavy emphasis on benefits from the State Firemen s Association, the Firemen s and Rescue Squad Workers Pension Fund, the PSOB, Workers Compensation and the State of North Carolina. Packets outlining the procedure to follow in case of a line-of-duty death will be provided as well. The class is designed to benefit all firefighters and is packed with useful information. Chiefs, company officers, and firefighters are encouraged to attend. 8 hours (Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm). Section 33 Changing Our Culture This class will address the significant dangers encountered every day and remind first responders of the actions that can be taken to make the work environment safer and gradually change our culture to see the reduction of injuries and deaths in the emergency service. 4 hours (Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Section 34 Basic Firefighting I This course is designed for the firefighter with little or no experience. Basics to be covered include: ladders, SCBA, fire streams, hose practices, etc. Practical applications will be used extensively. 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Requires Chief s signature on registration. Section 35 Hale Mechanics Pump Technician This class is designed for pump technicians to increase general knowledge and maintenance skills. The class is being sponsored by SAFE Industries, Hale Pump and KME. Class is limited to 17 students, preference will be given to technicians and fleet supervisors. Lunch will be provided by sponsors for pump tech students. 16 hours (Wednesday & Thursday 8:00am 5:00pm). Full Appropriate Safety Gear Required. Class will be held at New Hanover County Fire Rescue Station # Murrayville Rd., Wilmington, NC Section 36 Explosives, Bombs & Booby Traps Emergency responders (including EMS, Law, Fire, and Rescue workers) may encounter various types of explosive devises and environments in today s society. This course will present both classroom instruction and practical exercises that will include bomb searches, spotting booby traps as well as other demonstrations. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Wear appropriate clothing for outside demonstrations and practicals. Section 37 Advanced Topics of Fire Investigations This course focuses on topics above and beyond the NFA Arson Detection for Fire Responders. Topics will include, but not be limited to, Legal Updates, Origin and Cause Determination, Fire Fatalities and the use of K-9s in Fire Investigations. The course is designed for personnel who are or hope to become fire investigators within their jurisdictions. Pre-requisites: NFA Arson/Fire Detection, Arson/Fire Detection for First Responders or Equivalent. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Requires Chief s signature on registration. Section 38 - Report Writing for Fire Investigators This class will focus on the proper written documentation of fire scene investigations. Topics covered will include: Scene notes, interviews related to scene investigation and completing the final fire report. 8 hours (Thursday 8:00am 5:00pm). Class will be held off-campus - Location TBA. Section 39 Fire Inspection I This class will meet the objectives related to Fire Inspections for NC Code Officials Qualification. 36 hours (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Class will be held at New Hanover County Fire Rescue Station # Castle Hayne Rd., Castle Hayne, NC Section 40 Fire Inspections Con Ed (Code Enforcement) This class will meet the annual continuing education requirements for Fire Code Officials. 6 hours (Thursday 9:00am 4:00pm). Class will be held off-campus - Location TBA. Section 41 Building Inspections Con Ed This class will meet the annual continuing education requirements for Building Code Officials. 6 hours (Friday 9:00am 4:00pm). Section 42 ACLS Refresher This course is a renewal of skills learned in the initial ACLS provider course. Students must bring current ACLS book to class and have a valid ACLS card to participate in this class. Must bring current card to class. 6 hours (Saturday 9:00am 4:00pm). Section 43 BLS CME This offering will provide continuing medical education credits for the following topics: Patient Assessment, EMT Pharmacology review, Burns, and Obstetrical Emergencies. Included with this class will be hands-on skills review. 8 hours (Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm). Section 44 - Scene Photography Students will learn scene photography procedures in both classroom lectures and practical exercises. Students will need to bring a suitable digital camera and any accessories (tripod, lenses, etc.) that they may use in
10 the course of their duties. Cell phone cameras will not be allowed for this class. 16 hours (Thursday & Friday 8:00am 5:00pm). Class will at Wrightsboro United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 3300 N. Kerr Ave., Wilmington, NC Section 45 - Active Shooter Response This class will cover several considerations as related to Active Shooter Situations. Information on establishing an effective response for all disciplines of Emergency Response (Law Enforcement, Fire & EMS) will be included. 8 hours (Wednesday 8:00am 5:00pm). Section 46 - Drowning Investigations This class will cover facts & myths in drowning investigations. Students will learn scientifically proven investigation techniques and the proper application of this information in all types of drowning scenarios. 16 hours (Thursday & Friday 8:00am 5:00pm). Class will be held at New Hanover Co. Sheriff s Office Wolfe Building, 198 Division Dr., Castle Hayne, NC Section 47 - Fire Scene Investigation for Law Enforcement This class will guide law enforcement officers on the basic aspects of a fire scene investigation. Course will highlight the challenges and opportunities of fire scene investigation. 6 hours (Friday 9:00am 4:00pm). Section 48 Basic Public Information Officer (NC Certification) The Basic Public Information Officer Course (G290) is designed to prepare participants to function as full- or part-time PIOs. Additionally, this training is a prerequisite and foundation for more advanced training that takes participants from the awareness level to the mastery level in their public information careers. This training will equip participants with the basic skills needed to be full- or part-time PIOs such as oral and written communications, and understanding and working with the media, and basic tools and techniques needed to perform effectively. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am 1:00pm). Section 49 Traffic Incident Management This class is designed to build teams of well-trained responders who can work together in a coordinated manner, from the moment the first emergency call is made. First Responders learn the correct deployment of response vehicles and equipment, how to create a safe work area using traffic control devices, and techniques to speed up accident clearance. 4 hours (Friday 6:00pm 10:00pm). Section 50 - High Voltage Safety for the First Responder This class will concentrate on safety and awareness of the first responders at emergencies involving electricity. It will cover power generating plants, transmission lines, distribution lines, substations, transformers and other parts of the system. The student will learn what to look for when responding to electrical emergencies and practice what they learn in tabletop simulations (responding to down power lines, transformer and substation fires, energized equipment such as aerial apparatus. construction cranes, etc.). The student will also learn a method of escaping electrically energized apparatus, lockout/tagout procedures and when lockout/tagout should be used. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Section 51 Recognition of the Occult & Terrorism for First Responders This class is designed to educate students in the area of the occult and terrorism. It will attempt to dispel myth and misunderstanding often created by the media including Hollywood. The first half of the class will focus on the differences of Satanism, Witchcraft and Hispanic/Mexican fold magic. The second half of the class will focus on terrorism, including the differences between international, domestic, state sponsored, lone wolf, cyber, and agricultural. The information shared at this class is unique and valuable and encompasses over 25 years of law enforcement training. No recording devices or cameras are allowed in the classroom. (This is not a class in religion). 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Section 52 Autism Awareness for First Responders This course is designed to provide First Responders with an understanding of Autism, its characteristics, and the knowledge to assist the patient on the spectrum in an emergency situation. 4 hours (Friday 6:00pm 10:00pm). Section 53 - Fundamentals of Evidence Collection for Fire/EMS This class will provide emergency responders with information on the recognition, preservation and collection of physical evidence as it relates to fire & medical emergency scenes. 8 hours (Wednesday 8:00am 5:00pm). Class will be held off-campus - Location TBA. Section 54 - Courtroom Testimony for Emergency Responders This class will provide first responders with the basics of courtroom testimony. Students will learn the importance of proper scene documentation, note taking and what to expect when called to testify. 6 hours (Thursday 9:00am 4:00pm).
