1 FIREFIGHTER City of Madison Heights Notice of Examination to Establish Eligibility List For Firefighter REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, as listed in the Job Description which is available online at (under Departments Human Resources). WAGES: Starting $44,767/annually; $64,568/annually after 48 months (plus benefits). YOU MUST APPLY ONLINE AT BOTH THE ONLINE APPLICATION AND THE WRITTEN EXAM MUST BE COMPLETED NO LATER THAN TUESDAY MARCH 25, 2014 AT 4:30 PM ALL FEES ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APPLICANT ~ FEE INFORMATION AND TESTING SITES FOR WRITTEN EXAM AVAILABLE ON EMPCO S WEBSITE. Passing results (min. 70%) of this one test will be accepted by participating Fire Departments in Michigan As of Online Application/Written Exam deadline of Tuesday, March 25, 2014, Applicants must: 1. Be 18 years of age or older 2. Be a US Citizen 3. Possess HS Diploma/GED 4. Possess State of MI (or reciprocal State equivalent) Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) Certification and License (NOTE: must be enrolled in Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P) program and provide proof of such with City application in order to proceed to oral boards) 5. Possess State of MI Fire Fighter II Certification 6. a. Possess valid MI driver s license b. No alcohol/drug conviction within last 5 years of application date c. Not have six or more active points on driving record Candidates must have a current written exam passing score and have completed the EMPCO online application as of March 25 th. ONLY CANDIDATES WITH THE TOP 100 SCORES WILL PROCEED THROUGH THE INITIAL ELIGIBILITY LIST PROCESS; the remaining candidates will be contacted only if the initial eligibility list is exhausted prior to the two-year expiration date. The top 100 candidates will be notified of their status and the deadline for submittal of a City of Madison Heights employment application along with proof of HS Graduation/GED, EMT-P Certification and license (or EMT-B License and proof of enrollment in EMT-P program), MI (or reciprocal State Equivalent) Fire Fighter II Certification, and copy of driving record. These items will be verified and candidates who do not comply with the City s application process will be removed from further consideration. The remaining candidates will be allowed to proceed through the oral boards. At Time of Hire: 1. Licensed as EMT-P 2. Successfully complete physical agility test, post-offer physical (including drug screen) and psychological examinations. 3. Successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation. 4. Provide Employment Eligibility Verification Information (i.e., INS I-9 Form). Form I-9 must be completed at time of hire. MADISON HEIGHTS RESIDENCY IS NOT REQUIRED.
2 GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Respond with their assigned unit to fire alarms, emergency medical situations, and other natural or man made emergencies as required; participate in fire prevention activities; perform fire suppression activities in the protection of life and property against the hazards of fire; provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to the ill and injured; operate and assist in maintaining fire apparatus, firefighting equipment, and facilities; and to perform related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the supervision of a Fire Sergeant or other superior officer. TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this classification may be called upon to do any or all following. These examples are not totally inclusive of all the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Employee holding this position is expected to maintain and update knowledge in job-related skills, office procedures, and office equipment. A. Respond as ordered to fire alarms with assigned unit, handle and safely operate various types of hose lines, nozzles, fire extinguishers, hand and power tools, erecting of ground ladders, and water systems required for fire extinguishment. B. Assist with fire extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, rescue, salvage, and overhaul operations. C. Drive and operate fire apparatus, EMS vehicles, and other vehicles as assigned. D. Responded as ordered to emergency medical alarms with assigned unit, provide emergency pre-hospital medical care involving starting i.v. s and dispensing medication as well as the use of resuscitation equipment, suction equipment, cardiac monitors, extrication equipment, and other medical supplies, under the direction of a Medical Control Physician. E. Participate in drills and other department training programs. F. Participate in fire prevention activities. 1
3 TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: [CONTINUED] JOB DESCRIPTION G. Perform general cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair of fire apparatus, firefighting equipment, and fire stations. H. Perform clerical duties including completion of reports, correspondence, and records as required. I. Operate telephone systems, radio systems, and other alarm systems as required. J. Respond as ordered to technical rescue incidents providing trench rescue and confined space rescue services commensurate with level of training. K. Prepare meals, wash dishes, and maintain fire station kitchen area as assigned. L. Perform any/all duties assigned by the Fire Chief. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations. A. Climb over obstacles; climb through openings; climb ladders; jump down from elevated surfaces; jump over obstacles, ditches and streams; and crawl in confined areas to search, investigate, and/or rescue. B. Communicate effectively over Fire Department radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and vehicle operations. C. Communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions, and commands. D. Conduct searches of buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve walking and/or standing for long periods of time and which requires the ability to distinguish color, odors, and perceive shapes. E. Conduct visual and audio observations. F. Enter and exit vehicles quickly to perform rescue operations or answer an emergency call. 2

Exercise independent judgement, within legal and departmental guidelines, to determine when there is undue danger and report the dangerous condition to their supervisor. H. Gather information by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, and informants. I. Operate an emergency vehicle during both the day and night; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits while exercising due care and caution, and in exception to traffic control devices and in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions and environmental conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow. J. Operate firefighting equipment, mechanical equipment, and tools. Pull/drag hose lines, use rope and tie a variety of fire service knots. K. Operate and use Fire Department self contained breathing apparatus. L. Perform Fire Department functions while working various shifts and unanticipated overtime. M. Perform tasks which require lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects while performing rescue or general firefighting functions. N. Perform patient assessment which involves touching, feeling (palpitation), vocal communication to detect possible injuries. O. Prepare various forms and other reports, using appropriate grammar, punctuation, symbols, and mathematical computations. P. Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and the law for purposes of ensuring appropriate firefighter behavior/response and performing activities involving the public. Q. Use bodily force to gain entrance through barriers to investigate and/or rescue. R. Use first aid equipment, splints, and bandages. Operate oxygen delivery equipment including resuscitators/inhalators. Operate suctioning equipment and defibrillation equipment. 3
