2 1402 Hybrid Firefighter I Course Orientation Guide Overview This Hybrid NFPA Firefighter I course combines online elearning elements with traditional skill development sessions to prepare you for the role as a firefighter. The 1402 course contains the following elements; 24 online elearning ATS (Action Training Systems) interactive video modules, 20 reading assignments, Power Points, quizzes, tests and traditional hands on practical skill development. During the class, supplemental instructional sessions are held where a lead instructor interfaces with all students online. At the successful completion of both the online portion and practical skill sessions, the student will participate in the South Carolina Fire Academy s NFPA Firefighter I course evaluation. The course, in its entirety, is designed to meet the training requirements for Firefighter I as specified in the National Fire Protection Association 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. The provided study will assist you in preparing for the final, proctored, written exam. The selfevaluation Exam Prep found at the end of the course is used to prep you for the exam; it is not a certification exam. Course Prerequisites You must have completed hazardous materials awareness level training, First Aid and CPR. Outcome Objectives After successfully completing all elements of this course, you will have met the job performance requirements for Fire Fighter I in the National Fire Protection Association 1001, Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, and 2012 edition. You will also receive a NFPA Fire Fighter I, IFSTA endorsed certificate. Testing The final examination process for the Hybrid NFPA Firefighter I course is a 100-question IFSAC endorsed written examination and 6 practical skill stations. Text The text for the course is International Fire Service Training Association s Essentials of Fire Fighting 6th edition. Every student will receive the text as well as the Course Orientation Guide and Performance Task Manuals (PTM) which includes other course information. Class Schedule As a hybrid class, the classroom portion is flexible. During the orientation session for the class, the instructor will provide the schedule for the class. This will include supplemental instruction sessions as well as practical skill development sessions. These sessions will be completed at least once a week during the course. 3 1402 Hybrid Firefighter I Course Orientation Guide The SCFA Online Training Hybrid Firefighter I website is your home base for the elearning portion of the course. ( It is designed to assist you in working through the course. You will need to log onto the site and use it throughout the course as well as the resources and assignments located there. The site has been established to guide you through the elements of the course, whether you are working at home or away from home. The modules of this course are divided in topics and each topic has four categories. They are; Activities, Study Materials, Skills Development and Chapter Evaluation. Each of the categories will be preceded by icons to help you recognize them as you move through the course. Listed below are the icons with short descriptions of what they represent. ICON ICON ICON ICON ICON ICON Activity - Reading assignments Each online module contains a chapter reading assignment from the student text. For this course, IFSTA s Essential of Fire Fighting 6th edition is used. Activity Watch Interactive Video Module The Interactive Video Module is a learning tool used to assist the student with the cognitive portion of the class. Each module contains must know information about the course. Study Materials Review PowerPoint Each chapter contains IFSTA s PowerPoint that may that corresponds to the reading assignment; these are a great study companion. Study Materials Take Quiz Each module contains quizzes designed to challenge the students and assist in test preparation. Skills Development - Review Skills This section provides a video review of each skill and a printable skill evaluation sheet and photo skill sheet of the performance task. Chapter Evaluation Take Test Each student must successfully pass each 20-question chapter test with a score of 70% or greater. The student may take each test three (3) times with the highest grade counting in the grade report. The tests are not timed and the student may save it and return at a later time if necessary. Once the test is complete, click the Submit and finish button. The student s score will automatically be posted in the grade report. The assignments in the course include reading, completing the interactive elearning Modules, reviewing the Power Points and taking the module quizzes and tests. It is strongly recommended that you complete the modules in order, beginning with Module 1. You must complete all required elements of the course with an overall score of 70% or greater. Online Course Completion At the completion of the online portion of the course, the student will receive an containing your Notice of Completion. The Notice of Completion is a receipt that verifies your completion of the online portion of the course. To receive the Notice of Completion, complete all the elearning Course Evaluation. This is an anonymous submittal to assist us in the development of online training classes. Once the South Carolina Fire Academy/May 2014/Revision 1 Page 3 of 6

4 1402 Hybrid Firefighter I Course Orientation Guide evaluation is complete, open the Notice of Completion link and click the Review your certificate button. An will automatically be sent. Remember the student must pass all 20 chapter tests and complete the elearning Course Evaluation before the certificate button is visible and certificate sent. Navigation inside the course: The standard navigation for web browsers is used in this course. You will access your main course page through the main website page that is explained in the login letter you received. Once you are in the course and begin to open multiple windows in the IE8 browser or tabs in Chrome or Firefox browsers you will need to make sure you close out of them to get back to the main course page. To do this, use the box for windows IE 8 and the x tab for Chrome or FiewFox. If you click either of the - buttons this will take out of the course and back the main website page and you will have to navigate back to the main course page like you did the first time. Another option for you can click the course number when it is displayed. to get you back to the course Tips for Success for the online portion of the course The following tips are offered to help you be successful in the online portion of the class: Complete all of your reading and course assignments early. If you wait until the last minute, you will quickly fall behind in the course. Read all of the information in the assigned chapters, not just enough to complete the assignments and answer the questions in the module tests. The proctored final exam will cover ALL of the information in the chapters. Dedicate specific times to work on the course. It is best if you can do some work every day or every shift, even if it is only for an hour. Create an environment for working on your course that is learning friendly. Eliminate any distractions such as television, background noise, etc. Put forth an honest effort with student assignments and the learning activities. Each assignment is designed to apply a cognitive step from the FFI standard. Make use of all your available resources. Academic Dishonesty Policy All work submitted for this or any other SC Fire Academy course must be the student s own work. Please follow academy policy when completing assignments for this class. The SC Fire Academy policy for Academic Dishonesty is located in the Public Fire Service Curriculum Catalog. Academic misconduct includes any of the following actions: Cheating Plagiarism Falsification of records Unauthorized possession of examinations Assisting others with in any perpetration of academic misconduct Attempts to engage in academic misconduct even if unsuccessful Any incident of academic misconduct will result in the student being dropped from the course and the sponsoring agency notified of the incident. Class Schedule Practical Skills Development This course will include instructor-led hands-on practical skills development sessions. The purpose of these sessions is to provide the student practical skills instruction and hands on experience required to be a NFPA Firefighter I as outlined in NFPA s 1001 standard. The practical skills development portion is divided into 4-hour blocks of instruction. Your instructor will provide a course schedule that includes the dates, times and locations for these skill sessions at the skill development orientation. Students are expected to attend and participate in the skill development sessions. You must attend both the class orientation and 80% of the skill development/supplemental instruction sessions to receive credit for the class. Please communicate with your instructor if you are going to miss a skill session. Class Schedule - Final Evaluation The final session of the class includes the testing of the Firefighter I objectives. The evaluation will consist of a written examination and a practical skill assessment. Written Examination The final examination for the class is the IFSAC endorsed Firefighter I certification test. This 100-question multiple choice test is a combination of all the course content. South Carolina Fire Academy/May 2014/Revision 1 Page 5 of 6

6 1402 Hybrid Firefighter I Course Orientation Guide The final exam is scheduled for a 2-hour session before the practical skills evaluation. Specific details and times will be provided by your instructor. Practical Skills Evaluation The practical skills evaluation is a final test of the skills covered in the course. During the skills evaluation, you will demonstrate your ability to perform a random sampling of skills to an evaluator. You will be provided a copy of the Performance Task Manual during the Orientation session which will include all possible skill evaluations and completion requirements. During the practical skills development sessions, the instructor will refer to this document in an effort to assist you during the evaluation phase of the class. If you have any questions about the final evaluation, please address them with the instructors during this portion of the class. The practical skills assessment will be completed at the end of the course. Your instructor will provide specific scheduling information for the date, time and location of the skills evaluation. Evaluation Overview Written Exam Information Questions: 100 Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Minimum Score: 70% Time Allowed for Exam: 2 hour Performance Task (PT) Evaluation Information # of PT in Bank: 133 # of Skills Tested: 15 or 17 (depending on skill packet) Grading Criteria: Pass/Fail as outlined on the South Carolina Fire Academy/May 2014/Revision 1 Page 6 of 6

8 Class Orientation Date: (1 Hour) Introduction of the class to include scheduling, expectations and overview of the online and supplemental instructional sessions. The instructor will also establish supplemental session dates. An inspection of PPE will also be completed to make sure all students posses safe and compliant PPE components. 9 Skill Session 3: PPE / SCBA Develop skills associated with PPE and SCBA to include emergency procedures, low profile maneuver, disentanglement, and donning and doffing of PPE and SCBA. 9 6 SCBA air emergency 9 8 Low profile maneuver 9 9 Disentangle from debris or wires 6 1 Don PPE 6 2 Don PPE/SCBA for use at an emergency 6 4 Doff PPE Skill Session 4: Firefighter Safety & Intro Burn Introduce students to the safe mounting and dismounting of apparatus, the setting up of scene control devices and an introductory burn. 2-1 Mount and Dismount an Apparatus 2-2 Perform scene management at a roadway incident Intro Introductory Burn Skill Session 5: Portable Extinguishers PPE & Search Introduce the student to the use of a portable extinguisher. Continue with skills practice in donning PPE and SCBA and perform a primary and secondary search. 7 1 Operate a pressurized water extinguisher 6 2 Don PPE/SCBA for use at an emergency 9 1 Perform a primary search 9 2 Perform a secondary search

11 Skill Session 8: Locating Information / Communication and Search Introduce students to locating information in fire department documents and the handling of routine business calls. Continue developing basic skills needed for a primary and secondary search, transmitting a MAYDAY report and PPE use Handle emergency and non-emergency calls 3 2 Use a portable radio for routine and emergency traffic 9 1 Perform a primary search 9 2 Perform a secondary search 9 5 Transmit a MAYDAY report 6 2 Don PPE/SCBA for use at an emergency 6 4 Doff PPE Skill Session 9: Rescue Drags & Carries Demonstrate rescue drags and carries needed to move or remove someone from a structure.
