2 Initial Condition Report Inventory The fol low ing items were pres ent: Clock case with Japy movement, working and in good condition Contemporary pendulum Alabaster case with gilt figurine of cupid holding bow, doves on torch adjacent Contemporary key Mea sure ments: Base 42 x 15.5 cm. Height (to top of fig u rine): 32 cm. Clock hous ing opening 10 cmø. Be zel di am e ter 11 cm. Rear opening di am e ter 8.3 cm, neither gated nor covered. General Condition Dirty, slight wear to figurine. Generally good condition and good restoration prognosis. Case Clock base with brass feet in very good con di tion, no dam age. No ev i dence of re pairs. Ornaments Spelter fig u rine in tact, very dirty, gild ing slightly worn, wear and pa tina com men su ra ble with age. Good condition, no evident repairs. Dial/Hands/Bezel Alabaster dial with gilt metal ro man nu mer als. Very good con di tion. Hands good, gilt. Movement Pendule de Paris 8-day move ment with count wheel and (con tem po rary but not orig i nal) iron bell held in place by knurled brass nut, Thieble suspension. Num bered 18126, Japy Fils mark. Ad just ment gear stamped Brocot Proprt. Con tem po rary al though pos si bly not original pen du lum pres ent (Pen du lum num bered 52 rather than 26 as expected). Sus pen sion good. In work ing or der, some rust on steel parts. All other num bers cor re spond. No parts miss ing and move ment in gen eral good con di tion. Crack to one main spring. Rear opening di am e ter 8.3 cm, neither gated nor covered. General Condition Dirty, slight wear to figurine. Generally good condition and good restoration prognosis.

3 Notes/Observations Clock in un usu ally good con di tion for age. Dates to based on marks. Repair/Restoration Steps General This is a high qual ity Victorian man tel clock from around 1870/80, fea tur ing a well cast, gilt putti stat u ette and a beau ti ful al a bas ter base with a good qual ity move ment. It is orig i nal, in - clud ing key and pos si bly pen du lum as far as it is pos si ble to as - cer tain. There are no signs of prior res to ra tion or re pairs any where. The clock move ment bears no signs of re pairs, no new bush - ings seem to have been in stalled. The wear to ar bors, wheels and es carp ment is low, less than ex pected con sid er ing the age of the move ment. The clock car ries one ser vice sig na ture, by F B Paulas, dated 21/2/75. Case The clock case was dis as sem bled, cleaned and reas sem bled. All alabaster sur faces, in clud ing those un der the or na mentation, were treated with Re nais sance Wax, a con ser va tion wax de vel oped in co-op er a tion with sci en tists at the Brit ish Mu seum. Ornaments This clock fea tures a beau ti ful or na ment in the shape of a cu pid or putti, and doves perched on a torch. The or na ment is fas tened to the clock case by means of screws, screwed into the fig u rine and tight ened to the base by means of hand-made nuts. As part of the restoration pro cess the or na ment was re moved from its plinth. The steel parts treated with chem i cal rust re mover and sub se quently preserved with oil. It was con cluded that apart from clean ing the figurine thor oughly no fur ther res to ra tion or re-gilding should be un der taken. Dial/Hands The gilt hands were in good con di tion and have been cleaned. The alabaster dial with metal Ro man num bers was in very good con di tion and just needed to be cleaned. 4 Movement The main spring bar rels were dis as sem bled and the springs re moved and dis carded. Bar rels and ar bors were ex am ined and ap proved. New main springs were fit ted. The move ment was re-as sem bled and both strik ing and go ing train tested. It bears the man u fac turer s mark Japy Fils and Médailles Serial num ber The move ment was com pletely dis as sem bled. All parts were ul tra sound cleaned and ex am ined un der high mag ni - fi ca tion. The end plates were ex am ined for wear, and all wheels and piv ots stud ied in di vid u ally to de tect any missing or bent cogs. All piv ots were bur nished. The end plates turned out to be in ex cel lent con di tion and no new bush ings needed to be in serted. The plates were ul tra sound cleaned, polished and pro tected with shel lac. A com plete lu bri ca tion pro - ce dure was car ried out. The move ment was sub - jected to two weeks of test - ing in a test rig, At the end of the test pe riod it was in stalled in the clock and reg u lated. Dur ing test ing it was dis cov ered that the pen du lum did not have the cor rect length and a new pen du lum was fab ri cated and in stalled. The sound of the bell was not au then tic and a new bell was in stalled.
