3 3 DAY INTENSIVE PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM MARGARET RIVER, 1 3 AUGUST 2014 Outback Initiatives 1. Introduction: We are NOT a Boot Camp Outback Initiatives is a Perth based Human Resource Development organisation involved in personal and group development initiatives which has been operating locally, nationally and internationally for over 20 years. Working closely with our customers we provide individually designed programs that not only achieve the client s specific outcomes but also initiate personal and organisational positive change that is ongoing and sustainable. These challenging, experiential-based, outdoor programs enable people to identify, understand and address individual strengths and weaknesses and commit to strategies to work more effectively. Our programs are experiential in nature thus subjecting participants to the practical aspects of working with other people, understanding their own and others behaviours and finding ways to achieve win/win outcomes in working relationships. They foster initiative and accountability, and encourage a considered approach to risk taking in the individual. We do NOT provide artificial, feel-good, short-term exercises. A successful capacity-building process should be approached strategically, not as a one-time event. Our simple yet effective development solutions will have an immediate and positive impact and result in actionable ideas to help you achieve your goals. Our Personal Development Plan and optional post-program ½ day experiential sessions ensure that the learnings and program outcomes are reinforced. Despite the short duration of this program, Outback Initiatives have found this format an ideal catalyst for improving the effectiveness of participants in their personal lives and the renewing or setting personal goals. It is important to understand that the programs are conducted in a learning environment where no person is being tested or put under any scrutiny. It is an outdoor-based hands on experience where there is no gender, age or fitness bias. This intensive 3 day program is based on our longer leadership initiatives conducted for the Singapore Police Force, The Gurkha Regiment of the Singapore Police and the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation. 2. Why Conduct This Program In The Outdoors? We know through our 20 years of experience that the programs outdoor-based experiential nature is far more effective than an indoor lecturing/teaching environment. Immediate consequences of team decisions have an immediate impact on the team, therefore learnings are significant and lasting and based on actual experience. We provide an environment where participants gain PRACTICAL experience in working in a team as opposed to classroom-based theory and gain valuable insights into their behaviours through a structured debrief and feedback process. 3. Objectives What Will You Gain From Our programs are designed to meet a broad range of needs for today's dynamic leaders, such as communication style, resilience, personal values and leadership presence and influence. We do this by providing a program with specific activities and debriefs which target and explore creativity and innovation, building healthy and strong relationships and partnerships based on mutual trust and respect; and acting ethically and with integrity. Through challenging experiential activities, we will explore effective leadership approaches to: Engagement and influencing for performance and organisational outcomes; Your impact as a leader in challenging situations: reactions, values, assumptions; Outback Initiatives Page 3 of 8

4 Enhancing personal communication and engagement styles to support change; Motivating people for collaboration and performance. You will have the opportunity to: Outback Initiatives Develop an understanding of self in terms of leadership, identifying personal leadership styles, strengths and weaknesses and accepting individuals differences and leadership styles; Develop an understanding of emotional intelligence to assist with relationship development; Understand how to engender motivation and commitment to achieve your personal and your team s goals; Understand team development and processes use of behavioural models and problem solving processes, including managing conflict; Learn to leverage personal qualities to influence others and impact across systems; Develop or enhance effective communication skills including giving and receiving honest feedback (DiSC assists with this process). 4. DiSC Behavioural Profiling Participants undergo the DiSC behavioural profiling which will enable them to identify their own behavioural style, identify their strengths and weaknesses, anticipate and minimise potential conflict and also helps them to read and understand others better. It is also an ideal tool for giving and receiving feedback in a positive, non-threatening manner. We will send a link via for participants to complete the profiling on line at their leisure prior to program commencement. A debrief session will take place on the program go over the results in the context of the program. 5. Location & Timing Places are limited to 24 participants to ensure each participant receives the support required to complete the program. This program will begin and conclude in Perth and will be conducted in the Margaret River/Augusta region over 3 days from Friday August 1 through to Sunday August 3 inclusive. 6. Program Content The main component of the program is experiential; however it is intended to introduce preprogram activities which focus on self-awareness and leadership theory. This is a vital step which will create a bridge to the experiential component which is linked to reality. The following elements are covered pre program: DISC model (Self awareness, behaviours) Program safety and pre program briefs. Participants are split into discrete teams and presented with a progressive series of exacting tasks requiring an excellence in leadership and team processes in order to be successful. Experienced facilitators lead participants through a series of activities and debriefs. The real power of experiential programs come from our underlying methodologies and the development of a number of individual and team aspects in parallel. Participants gain a greater understanding of their own style and how they interact within the group and develop and enhance their communication, planning and conflict resolution skills. Our unique and highly successful program has a proven track record which enables you to explore different modes of engaging and influencing others, build personal strengths and systematically devise a leadership approach to challenging issues. I wish I had done this course when I first took on the role of a team leader - this course provided and confirmed learning experiences that could have saved me from some serious issues and setbacks that have cost me years in terms of career satisfaction and enjoyment - this stress also flowed through to family life and that should never have happened Chris Pegg S/Sgt, Moe Police Outback Initiatives Page 7 of 8

8 Outback Initiatives 17. What did participants think of the program? A word of appreciation to the Outback Initiatives team for the professional and safe way in which our extraordinary experience was managed. From the very start until the end of the process we were enabled, empowered and encouraged. The risk factor and consequences added a heightened sense of importance and an authentic need to contribute, participate and achieve all of the tasks which challenged us. I experienced a huge sense of pride and elation in our accomplishing the many complex and diverse challenges. The guidance was subtle but the learning s were powerful and we were able to take corrective action quickly and effectively, gaining a greater understanding of leadership skills, personality styles and the complexities of human nature. I have returned to my organisation with some very practical strategies, valuable new skills and a sharper awareness of who I am myself, who I am working with and how to get the most out of myself and others. This multilayered experience has been the best investment of my time that I have made in several years, thank you to the OI crew for your passion and emotional intelligence, what a fun and fabulous time we had, great to have made many new friends amongst like minded women, can t wait for the journey to continue! -Caroline Experiential Learning facilitator, Crossing Point Leadership Academy.. Over the years during my time as a professional soldier and more recently an Executive with the CBH Group, I have been lucky enough to attend a number of development programs where leadership and team skills are the main focus. I can therefore state with some confidence that Outback Initiatives provides among the best individual and team development programs one can experience. The program they operate is based upon a tried and proven methodology combined with the specific needs of the group involved. A number of times during our program I was motivated to complement the program directors on the highly professional, safe, enjoyable and very effective way in which activities were conducted. I have pleasure in commending Outback Initiatives to any organisation contemplating this type of development program. Tim Collins, Executive Manager, Australian Grain Centre - CBH I had the privilege to be invited to the Outback Initiatives Women's Leadership course on the 19th - 22nd of September. I went into the experience with an open mind, a willingness to learn and a trust that even with little to no information I was in for a big weekend. By the first night I was very tempted to start walking home on a pit stop at Baldivis and was wondering what did I get myself into!! But as the weekend progressed I learnt how to lead and how to follow, how to respect and how to listen, how to communicate and how to create a safe team environment no matter what style of leadership we were under. I also learnt so much about myself individually finding confidence in my abilities and discovery and growth of my weaknesses that I am ready to take the next step in life and adapt what I have learnt putting into practice. I will be back each year to monitor my progress and looking forward to more exciting challenges and different personalities to test my limits.
