First Day 1999/ Philosophy/2nd Step Curriculum 4. Maplewood Large & Small Groups Individual Parent Consultation McCord-master schedule, registration, scheduling, WEB Program, testing, conferences, small groups, emotional and academic support for individuals, parent consultation, crisis
5 Transitions: Making entry into a new district or building a smooth and stress free one Transition to New District/Building in Elementary & Junior High Maplewood-new student lunch, Getting to Know You Activity, 2 week check-in McCord- new students-info about jrhi, schedule,walk through schedule & tour, connect with other students in classes. Ice Cream/AI at end of 1st week Transition from Elementary to Junior High Counselors visit feeder schools/? s about Junior High and scheduling 5th Graders visit McCord after testing in May. 5th Grade Parent Night in May 6th grade book of tips for success.
6 Transitions (continued) WEB- 5th-6th Orientation Program- several days before school starts; new 7th & 8th graders are also invited. Introductions of staff & leaders, Getting to Know You Activities, What is Cyber Bullying?, Scenarios & Discussions, Being an Upstander, I Am the Majority (DVD), Scavenger Hunt of School, How to Be Successful in Junior High, Using the Crosswalk, Closing Activity. 1st Day of school-leaders greet and help 6th graders at the start of school and eat lunch with them.
7 Types of Bullying/ How to Prevent Them Types of Bullying: Elementary-name calling and exclusion, some cyberbullying in 4th & 5th(rumors & gossip, mean texts) JrHi-rumors & gossip, name calling, relational aggression, cyberbullying-imposters online, rumors & gossip, exclusion from online groups, threats & intimidation. How to Prevent: Being Proactive & Educating 1. Elementary- 2nd Step Curriculum/Framework Teach about feelings- understanding our feelings helps to develop empathy;*cutting is a huge concern in junior high; research indicates that kids who cut have not learned to express their feelings in a healthy way.
8 Ways to Prevent (continued) Teach about: Learn to respond to feelings in a kind way. Communication Skills- being assertive, not passive or aggressive, teaches them to advocate for themselves and others, learn to feel capable and confident. Calming Down Strong Feelings-enables thinking/then we can problem solve Problem Solving Skills-helps to build healthy relationships, helps to consider another s point of view
9 Ways to Prevent (continued) Educate about being a good digital citizen. Focus on good citizens and leaders/peer mentors Survey students about cyberbullying and school climate to learn how to improve. I AM THE MAJORITY social norming campaign, Utilize WEB Leaders, Focus on the positive! *Majority of students do not bully! Be An Upstander! Don t stand by, stand up for others!
