2 Why Elementary School Counselors? Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills children need to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program counselors work as a team with the school and community to create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing education, early identification and intervention, school counselors help all children achieve success. The professional elementary school counselor holds a master s degree and certification in school counseling. 2

3 Mission Statement DeKalb County School System Mission Statement The mission of the DeKalb County School System is to form a collaborative effort between home and school that maximizes students social and academic potential, preparing them to compete in a global society. Allgood Elementary The mission of McLendon Elementary School is to deliver powerful teaching and powerful learning through family, community and school. DeKalb County Guidance Program Allgood Elementary School guidance program supports the mission of the school district and local school. The guidance program contributes to the accomplishment of that mission by facilitating an active comprehensive, developmentally sequential and standards based guidance program. Through the provision of guidance services, all students shall receive enhancement of student competency in the academic, personal social and career domains. This supports all students in acquiring the knowledge and attitude needed to develop into effective students, responsible citizens, valuable workers and long-term learners. The guidance program supports the individual needs of students as well as district academic and co-curricular programming. 3

4 PHILOSOPHY DeKalb County Schools Guidance and Counseling Program Philosophy The Guidance and Counseling program is designed to promote the social, emotional, personal, and cognitive development of each student. Our program is an integral part of the educational process which enhances the total development of the student. Allgood Guidance program philosophy We believe: The responsibility for monitoring educational progress rests with the parent and student, the professional school counselor will assist in this process. All students have self-respect and value All students can achieve All students have the right to take part in the school guidance and counseling program The School Guidance and Counseling program: Is built on clear-cut goals and developmental student competencies for all students The Counselor: Abide by professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association professional ethics Maintain a quality school counseling program by taking part in professional development competency training/retraining. 4

5 School Guidance Program Goals Decrease discipline referrals for battery and classroom disturbance by 2%. 2. Ensure 90% of 5 th grade students identified as at risk for retention because of their multiple D s and F s on their report cards will pass 5 th grade. 3. Increase average student attendance by 3% for the school year
