2 Position: Reports To: High School Counselor Senior High School Administrator POSITION SUMMARY The High School Counselor is a leader of the school s culture with a focus on constructive discipline, positive reinforcement of aligned behaviors, and rich communication with parents and families of the students. In addition, the Counselor shall: 1) plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive counseling program; 2) plan, coordinate and evaluate the extracurricular activities, and 3) shall lend his or her unique talents, insight into character development, and dedication to doing whatever it takes to ensure students succeed, putting our school s students firmly on the track to success in high school and college. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Share a commitment to the success of the mission, goals, and objectives of the MOT Charter School. Set high expectations and standards for yourself and others. Live out the school s mission, vision and goals. Establish a professional rapport with students and with staff that earns their respect. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school. Serve as a role model for students by dressing professionally, accepting responsibility for your actions, and demonstrating good sportsmanship, the importance of learning, and pride in the education profession. Inspire confidence in students and families. Develop an open and trusting relationship between faculty, students and community members. Observe of all Board policies and all procedures and policies as outlined in the MOT Charter School Employee Manual. Display personal qualities that reflect favorably upon you and the school. Share responsibility for professional, cooperative staff relations and for activities important to the operation of the school. Conduct one-self according to professional, ethical principles. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program Guidance Curriculum Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators. Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.

3 Incorporates into their programs the life skills that students need to be successful in college and beyond. Individual Student Planning Academic planning/ SSP s Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions. Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans. Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data. Collaborates with parents and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning. Communicate graduation requirements to parents and students. Meet with high school students annually to evaluate their academic progress/records and to ensure that they are on schedule to graduate. Meet with juniors individually to ensure that they are on schedule to graduate, are preparing for college applications, and have a senior schedule that will satisfy graduation requirements. Meet with students on an individual basis concerning academic issues and concerns reported by teachers and parents. Manage student transfers, including transcripts and graduation requirements. Preventive and Responsive Services Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs. Early intervention planning for students who are academically at risk Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs. Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed. System Support Provides appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive school academic counseling program. Preview new student records for academic needs and appropriate class placement. Assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data. Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills. Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program and academic interventions. Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession. 2. School Climate Create, implement, and evaluate programs that increase student motivation and reduce disciplinary and academic probation referrals. Investigate and resolve student disciplinary matters.

4 Track and manage student discipline records. Create programs to address specific disciplinary issues that arise throughout the year. Demonstrate skill in conflict-- resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, and/or the community. Implement policies on tardiness, attendance, discipline, bullying. Manage student supervision and enforce school behavior expectations; including attendance. Counsel students and parents about school policies. Assist in the planning, developing and implementing individual student behavior plans. Maintain high standards of student conduct and work to ensure discipline codes are followed for all students, according due process to the rights of students. Serves as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues. Assist in developing programs to promote positive student behavior as well as intervention strategies. Confer appropriate consequences for behavior issues. Coordinate parent teacher conferences and back to school nights. Responsible for monitoring student attendance and addressing attendance concerns. 2. Extracurricular Activities Responsible for all aspects of the Extracurricular Program, including: marketing, scheduling, registration, roster management, risk management, record keeping, awards, celebrations, pictures, etc. Recruit and communication with all extracurricular advisors and volunteers. Ensure that participants are registered and have paid the registration fee. Ensure we have the required facilities for extracurricular activities. Manage the budget for extracurricular activities. Ensure club advisor compliance with rules and policies of MOT Charter School. Supervise and evaluate the school s extracurricular activities. 3. College Admissions Develop and maintain a college counseling program. Build and maintain the college bound environment. Maintain and communicate college information and resources to students and parents. Build relationships with a variety of schools and maintain the profile of our school. Review transcripts to evaluate progress toward graduation requirements. Support students and parents in the college planning process. Design and support the implementation of a SAT and PSAT prep course. Communicate PSAT, SAT and ACT information to students and parents. Develop and manage college and career classroom guidance appropriate to all grade levels. Plan and administer the College Fair, Career Day, College Information Night, College visits and AP exams. Develop and maintain the College Planning Guide. Write college recommendations for seniors. Assist students and parents in the college application process. Assist students and parents with financial aide and scholarship materials. Minimum Required Qualifications:

5 Bachelor s Degree from an accredited university in counseling or a related field. Current first aid certification and CPR certification. Excellent administrative experience. Five years relevant work experience with high school students. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.
