Smith, Ph.D. Amy Crutchfield Ben Haden Fall 2015 This Leadership Profile is intended to provide information about Hawai i Pacific University and the position of Vice President for Enrollment Management. It is designed to assist qualified individuals in assessing their interest in this position.

2 The Opportunity Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU), located in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, seeks a vice president for enrollment management to serve on its senior management team. The incoming vice president will set the strategic direction for HPU s enrollment objectives, and execute on its short and long term goals. She or he should excel at driving enrollment from a best practice and systems perspective, and have a passion for recruitment within a local, national, and international context. The ideal candidate will be metrics- and process-driven, with a student-centered focus and proven ability to forge relationships. She or he will also possess a combination of modern recruitment management experience, social media savvy, a deep understanding of the academic programs to which HPU recruits, and knowledge of financial aid. The vice president for enrollment management is administratively responsible for Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions and Financial Aid, while also serving as a key member of the senior administrative team. This is not a status-quo position. The incumbent will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of HPU and its student population. The incoming vice president will be tasked to establish a clear vision for the enrollment unit; develop a strategic plan with clearly articulated goals, objectives, benchmarks and action items; drive and implement the strategic plan with consistency and focus; ensure the campus is unified in executing on both the immediate enrollment goals and demands for the next class while laying the foundation for future classes; and employ both traditional and non-traditional means to attract, select, enroll, register and retain a highly diverse group of students. The University seeks a strategic, creative, forward-thinking, analytical, collaborative, and highly experienced enrollment professional who has the vision and confidence to combine best practices with entrepreneurial approaches in an effort to lead the way across an urban, multi-site campus. The vice president for enrollment management will oversee a staff of more than thirty and work in close coordination with both the administrative and academic functions across the institution to achieve enrollment success. 3 Summary of the Role of Vice President for Enrollment Management The vice president for enrollment management (VPEM) is administratively responsible for all undergraduate and graduate admissions programs and financial aid. Reporting to the president, the VPEM will also serve as a key member of the senior administrative team and provide strategic advice and counsel on all campus-wide enrollment matters. The next VPEM will be responsible for the development and implementation of recruitment, pricing and financial aid and leveraging strategies for the institution, encompassing the traditional day students, adult undergraduate students and graduate students. Additionally, the VPEM will: Provide strategic leadership in advancing the University s recruitment, retention and enrollment goals; Assure effective use of technology and data analytics in achieving enrollment objectives in each college and program; Maintain the University s commitment to superior student-centered service; In consultation with the deans, set and drive annual enrollment as well as net tuition revenue goals for each college and the academic programs; Balance and manage brand awareness for the University as a whole in the context of strong individual programs and in collaboration with marketing and communications ; Further integrate the Admissions process with Financial Aid and Registration; Collaborate with senior management on a wide range of recruitment and marketing projects including comprehensive communication plans and campus visit programs; Ensure compliance with all Federal and State regulations as they relate to Admissions and Financial Aid; Lead marketing initiatives including marketing analysis for current and potential future programs; and Manage and effectively deploy admissions and financial aid budget. The successful candidate will excel at driving enrollment management from a systems viewpoint with a passion for recruitment in the global context in which HPU operates and thrives. The ideal candidate will be metrics- and process-driven, with a student-centered focus and proven ability to forge strong and productive relationships. 3

4 Candidate Qualifications and Characteristics Hawai i Pacific University s next vice president for enrollment management should possess the following qualifications and characteristics: Proven leadership experience and the ability to inspire trust and instill confidence in the HPU community; Enthusiastic campus presence, actively engaged in a living learning community of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the local Honolulu and Oʻahu community; A person with financial acumen who will aid the university in matching aspirations with finite resources while thinking creatively about enrollment strategies and tactics; Strong management skills with the ability to promote collaboration and teamwork while inspiring success from an evolving enrollment team; A global perspective and commitment to fostering diversity in its many forms; Knowledge about key issues affecting universities nationally and internationally; An appreciation and advocate for the private comprehensive institution experience; A genuine appreciation for the Hawaiian culture and its place in regional, national and international discourse; High energy and an ability to execute on a strategy with clear goals and objectives; and A willingness to work hard in a hands-on environment where teamwork and collaboration is critical to the success of the institution The incumbent should also possess: Bachelor s degree; master s preferred; Ten years of management and leadership experience in higher education; Extensive knowledge of traditional functional areas in enrollment management with experience in graduate enrollment highly desired; Extensive knowledge of university administration and national admissions; Familiar with and able to provide oversight for financial aid law, policy, practices and regulations; Substantial experience working in higher education enrollment management; A record of success in meeting local, regional and international enrollment goals; Comfort with institutional complexity, and skilled at introducing sustainable change at multiple levels; Knowledge of national enrollment and market trends; Awareness of cutting edge strategies, and mastery of demographic information; Able to build and assess current financial aid models, strategies, and practices; 4

5 Able to work closely with student financial services staff and consultants in optimizing state, federal and institutional resources to achieve enrollment and net tuition revenue goals; Proficiency with customer relationship management (CRM) and student information systems; Experience in using communication technologies to recruit and enroll students; Exceptional planning, budgeting and organizational skills; Ability to analyze data and review options to determine best strategy; Experience managing staff, with an ability to inspire, motivate and support their professional development; Excellent communication and presentation skills; A strong professional network, including relationships with the college counseling community; and Strong intercultural competence with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment. Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership Develop a comprehensive enrollment strategy that aligns with the mission and vision of the campus Historically, Hawaiʻi Pacific University has served three populations of students: local Hawaiʻi residents; students from sister states on the U.S. mainland; and international students. HPU also has a strong military presence and has been recognized as one of the most military friendly schools in the country. Of utmost and near term importance is for the vice president for enrollment management to create a working strategic plan that 1) details specific action items for sustaining student enrollment in both the near and long term; 2) articulates alignment with HPU s mission, vision, and enrollment goals and objectives; and 3) takes into account and 5

6 embraces the diverse nature of HPU s student body, physical plant, and unique program offerings. The vice president for enrollment management will translate the University s enrollment plan into strategies and tactics and provide leadership in executing and achieving enrollment and net tuition revenue goals. Lead the implementation of best practice enrollment systems, policies and procedures Over the last few years, HPU s enrollment functions have been managed and led by multiple leaders across the institution. The university desires more strategic coordination and consistent enrollment strategies. There are significant opportunities to develop more fully standards of practice in a way that meets the enrollment goals for the campus. The next vice president will have the opportunity to assess the current enrollment environment and quickly implement best practices systems, policies and procedures that will have an immediate and positive impact. Basic objectives must be met to ensure the enrollment of the next class. However, the incumbent must be willing and able to ensure day to day tasks are managed while developing more robust systems and practices within the enrollment division for the future. Facilitate enrollment discourse across campus and ensure HPU is executing on its enrollment plan The vice president must continually engage in dialogue across campus and evaluate and assess the overall strategy and focus to be sure enrollment is optimally effective in maximizing both current and long-term enrollment health. The incumbent must be willing to be a hands-on leader, if necessary, to facilitate strategy and continue to move the bar by enrolling increasingly talented undergraduates while growing the graduate student population. The vice president will be charged with raising the level of discourse across the University in regard to enrollment and the appropriate mix of students, and she or he will strategically employ both new and proven outreach methods so as to increase key populations within the student body, working in partnership with all areas of the institution. Create a culture of openness and transparency through collaboration The vice president will encourage and promote a culture of openness and transparency and collaborate across the institution to ensure the campus is meeting its enrollment targets. The VPEM will collaborate with Institutional Research to develop and analyze enrollment-related research and admissions trend data, with an eye towards informing decisions about short and long-range enrollment goals, new market opportunities and trends. The vice president will 6

7 collaborate regularly with others across campus, including academic departments, Marketing, Finance and Administration, Athletics, Distance Education and International Programs, and be conscious of linking new student enrollment to persistence and retention at the University. The new vice president will be expected to have outstanding managerial skills and continue promoting the importance of both external and internal customer service in enrollment offices as part of enhancing the student experience and achieving operational and service excellence. Enrollment HPU s enrollment includes approximately 5,700 full and part-time undergraduates and 1,100 graduate students for a total enrollment of approximately 6,800 students. In Fall 2015, approximately 500 freshman from over 44 states and territories as well as 20 countries matriculated at HPU. The top countries for international students are Norway, Canada Sweden, Taiwan, and Thailand. The typical profile of the HPU freshmen student includes an average SAT composite score of 1000 and GPA of 3.5. The university s largest undergraduate majors are in the areas of Nursing, Biology, Marine Science, and Business. Currently, the first to second-year retention rate for full-time undergraduate students is 70 percent, and the six-year graduation rate is 42 percent. Hawai'i Pacific University has been recognized by a number of leading publications for the value it offers undergraduate and graduate students. HPU provides a high caliber education at a tuition rate well below the national average. HPU offers competitive academic and talent-based scholarship awards to new freshman and transfer students. Scholarship opportunities are also available for continuing students who meet certain academic or need-based criteria. HPU s freshmen scholarships range from $16,000 to $48,000 for four years of enrollment (annually $4,000 to $12,000 awards, renewable for three additional years). HPU s ACE scholarship is for adult students who are in need of financial assistance who have exhausted the more traditional avenues of support, such as the Federal Financial Aid Program. Hawai'i Pacific University is a NCAA Division II institution, and member of the Pacific West Conference, and a limited amount of athletic scholarships are available upon the discretion of the sport s head coach. Hawai i Pacific University: An Overview HPU is a private, not-for-profit institution of approximately 5,700 undergraduate and 1,100 graduate students. Founded in 1965, it is now Hawaiʻi s largest private university, with campuses in historic downtown Honolulu and in the lush, verdant foothills of the Koʻolau Mountains on the windward side of O ahu; six military base locations around O ahu; and a major marine science research institute, the Oceanic Institute, at Makapuʻu Point. HPU is 7

8 accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and has multiple additional accreditations and memberships from nationally recognized groups. HPU offers more than 50 undergraduate programs and 14 graduate programs taught by approximately 180 full-time faculty members as well as adjunct faculty. The university s academic enterprise is organized around four colleges: Business, Liberal Arts, Natural & Computational Sciences and Health and Society. Hawaiʻi Pacific University has graduated tens of thousands of alumni including a growing number of individuals making a significant mark in their professional endeavors, including Marshall Islands President Christopher Loeak, U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard and software engineer/author James D. McCaffrey. Hawai i Pacific has become well known over the past four decades as one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the nation, with students from all 50 U.S. states and nearly 80 countries. Located halfway between North America and Asia, HPU is set in the world s most remote metropolis, an island of roughly 1 million residents with significant populations from Polynesia, Asia, Europe and North America. In addition to its inherent demographic diversity, Honolulu is visited by more than 4.4 million guests each year from around the world, creating a culturally rich, international environment throughout the island of O ahu. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the university is pursuing multiple exciting new ventures, most prominently, the revitalization of a living-learning complex at iconic Aloha Tower Marketplace on the downtown Honolulu waterfront. Opened in the fall, the endeavor provides exceptional housing options for nearly 300 students, as well as classrooms, small-group study spaces, venues for lectures and conferences, retail and dining outlets and more. Nevertheless, more work could be done to shine a light on its programs of excellence through effective communication and publicly championing the excellent work of current and former students, faculty, and staff. This narrative will lay a foundation for the work that needs to be done in terms of attracting and retaining high quality students as well as enhancing the overall fundraising efforts of the university. 12 A 2012 report from NAFSA: Association of International Educators shows that international students studying at HPU generate a larger impact on the Hawaii economy than international students studying at any other Hawaii university about equal to the total of international students studying at the University of Hawaii s Hilo, Manoa, Maui and West Oahu campuses combined. The organization comprising Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times placed a new emphasis on academic rigor when conducting and scoring the fourth annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey, a highly respected 150-question analysis of a school s complete offerings for veterans. For more information click here. Student Life College students share similar goals of meeting new people, finding ways to get involved, and having new experiences. The Center for Student Life & First-Year Programs supports these goals by offering intentional, educational, and innovative programs and activities. Students have the opportunity to experience leadership by getting involved in undergraduate student 12

13 government, Campus Activities Board, clubs, and as Orientation Leaders during New Student Orientation. Athletics Hawai i Pacific University is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II. The HPU Sharks compete in the Pacific West Conference and offer 14 scholarship sports. HPU has a variety of competitive men s and women s teams. HPU s men s athletic programs are baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis. Women's athletic programs at HPU include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Acrobatics and tumbling, an emerging women s sport, began competition in For the school year, 11 of the 13 teams had individual members who were recognized at the conference level by being selected to an All-PacWest Team. Six of the teams had members make the All-West Region Team and three teams boasted All-Americans. Faculty HPU employs approximately 180 full-time faculty members in addition to adjunct faculty all with distinguished academic and business credentials. A vast majority of HPU faculty members hold the highest degrees in their fields. Faculty range from top-level executives at Fortune 500 companies to state government leaders who enliven the learning experience with real-world knowledge. HPU faculty members are renowned for the personal interest they take in each of their students. HPU s student-centered approach and low student-faculty ratio of 13:1 naturally results in personal attention and one-on-one guidance. There are no student assistants; only highly qualified faculty teach classes. The average class size is less than 20 students. Campuses and Facilities HPU combines the excitement of an urban downtown campus with the serenity of a residential campus set in the green foothills of O ahu s Ko olau mountains. The main campus is located in downtown Honolulu, the business and financial center of the Pacific. It is home to the College of Business Administration and College of Humanities and Social Sciences. 13

14 Downtown Campus The downtown campus comprises buildings in the center of Honolulu s business district. Recently, Hawai i Pacific University (HPU), through a legal entity, purchased the Aloha Tower Marketplace (ATM) buildings in late Aloha Tower Marketplace is an iconic destination. It includes: University Housing: Transform the second floor into modern, urban loft spaces for nearly 300 students, as well as a small number of faculty and staff Retail & Dining: Refresh the ground floor for various university uses plus a vibrant mix of retail, commercial and dining establishments that the public is encouraged to come and experience Community Spaces: Multi-purpose venues with spaces for community gatherings, performances, lectures and recreational activities Hawaii Loa Campus Eight miles away, situated on 135 acres in Kaneohe, the Hawaii Loa campus is the site of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, as well as many general education courses. On the suburban and residential windward Hawaii Loa campus, academic life revolves around the Amos N. Starr and Juliette Montague Cooke Academic Center (AC). The AC houses classrooms; organic chemistry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and regular laboratories; faculty and staff offices; a theater; an art gallery; and the Atherton Library, which includes circulating and reference book collections in the areas of art, history, marine science, nursing, and Hawai i and the Pacific. Additionally, the library provides access to electronic books (ebooks), databases, study rooms, computers, and wireless Internet. Oceanic Institute The Oceanic Institute of HPU is a major research center specializing in marine biology, marine aquaculture, biotechnology, and ocean resource management. The Oceanic Institute is located on a 56-acre site at Makapu u Point on the windward coast of O ahu, Hawai i. Learning, internship, and research opportunities for graduates and undergraduates abound in this hands-on learning environment. All three sites are conveniently linked by shuttle. 14

15 Military Sites HPU is also present on seven campuses on military installations across the island of O'ahu. The campuses are located at Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hickam Air Force Base, Schofield Army Barracks, Fort Shafter, Tripler Army Medical Center, Marine Corps Base Hawai'i - Kaneohe, and Marine Corps Base Hawai'i - Camp H.M. Smith and provide U.S. service members, dependents, and U.S.D.O.D. personnel with educational opportunities. Downtown Campus Hawai'i Pacific University One Aloha Tower Drive Honolulu, HI Hawaii Loa Campus Hawai'i Pacific University Kamehameha Highway Kaneohe, HI Oceanic Institute Oceanic Institute Kalanianaole Highway Waimanalo, HI 96795, U.S.A. Honolulu, Hawai i Honolulu is the state capital and the most populous city in the state of Hawai i. It is the county seat of the City and County of Honolulu. Hawaii is a major tourist destination and Honolulu, situated on the island of Oahu, is the main gateway to Hawai i and a major gateway into the United States. The city is also a major hub for international business, military defense, as well as famously being host to a diverse variety of east-west and Pacific culture, cuisine, and traditions. Honolulu is both the westernmost and the southernmost major American city. For statistical purposes, the U.S. Census Bureau recognizes the approximate area commonly referred to as "City of Honolulu" (not to be confused with the "City and County") as a census county division (CCD). Honolulu is a major financial center of the islands and of the Pacific Ocean. The population of Honolulu CCD was 390,738 in 2010, while the population of the consolidated city and county was 953,207. The city has been the capital of the Hawaiian islands since 1845 and gained historical recognition following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan near the city on December 7, (excerpt from 15

16 Procedure for Candidacy Hawai i Pacific University invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Enrollment Management.
