3 Context The success of the Erasmus Mundus Programme worldwide, together with the scheduled implementation of the Bologna Process, pushed European Universities to reserve to joint curricula development a special place in their internationalisation strategies. European Universities have been involved in joint programme development since the eighties, however the Erasmus Mundus Programme has brought a substantial change in the philosophy connected to joint programme creation and administration, focusing on the concept of consortia didactical and administrative integration. At the present, after 5 years of Erasmus Mundus life, many administrative issues are still open, such as the sustainability, which is linked to different National university funding systems and to social cohesion dimension, and the need for common procedures and tools for consortia cooperation. 3

4 Focus (1/2) The Erasmus Mundus model raised additional debates, focusing not only on curriculum development, but on administrative issues too, such as: Application, selection and certification procedures: How to integrate the needs of the transnational dimension into the normal procedures? Financial management: How to harmonize tuition fees? How to address social cohesion problems? How to sustain a Joint Programme? Organization of services and quality issues in Joint Programmes DURING THE FIRST YEAR THE JOIMAN PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON THE ABOVE MENTIONED ISSUES, INVESTIGATING IN THE ALREADY APPLIED PROCEDURES AND HIGHLIGHTING GOOD PRACTICES 4

5 Focus (2/2) ERASMUS MUNDUS II is promoting Joint Programmes at Doctoral level, providing the opportunity to involve in the consortia Higher Education Insitutions from Third Countries. These opportunities will raise new debates and challenges within the Higher Education Community. DURING THE SECOND YEAR THE JOIMAN PROJECT WILL ADDRESS THE NEW CHALLENGES OF THE ERASMUS MUNDUS II PROGRAMME, Joint PHD Development and in particular the issues related to: Joint Programmes with Third Country Insitutions and in particular with non- BOLOGNA PROCESS HEIs 5

6 General Objectives To improve the management capacity of European Higher Education Institutions in the administration and management of Joint Programmes To create a common discussion platform among institutions with a relevant experience in the development and management of Joint Programmes To analyse the existing administrative procedures and practices in the management of Joint Programmes at Master and PhD level To develop new guidelines, good practice examples and common cooperation tools To prepare European Universities to the opportunities and challenges of the Erasmus Mundus II Programme 6

7 Activities and Methodology The following activities will be carried out by the Network: Survey and analysis of the existing procedures implemented by the universities of the Network in the above described research domains Survey and analysis of the existing procedures adopted by universities outside the Network in the research domains Survey and analysis of the existing tools for cooperation adopted by HEI for the joint management of Programmes Definition of the main administrative problems faced by the partners in running JP Development of good practice reports, new methodologies and new cooperation tools Dissemination of the achieved results Valorisation and Exploitation activities 7

8 Outputs Survey on Selection, Enrolment Certification procedures, on financial sustainability and on the organizational model of HEIs in relation to Joint Programme Good practices report on the research topic of the project Call for papers on Joint Phd development and management and on Joint Programmes with non Bologna Process HEIs Dissemination of the achieved results with relevant stakeholders Three Valorisation Seminars in Rome (November 2009) Brussels (March 2010) and Vilnius (September 2010) 8

9 Expected Outcomes The Network will improve the management capacities of its members in the management and administration of Joint Programmes Will give to participants the tools to face new challenges in the development and management of Joint Programmes Will provide to the HEI community a set of analysis, reports and good practice examples, in the following domains: Application, Enrolment, Selection and Certification of students career Financial sustainability of Joint Programmes Quality/Organisation/Services in Joint Programmes Development and administration of Joint PHD Programmes Development and administration of Joint Programmes with non UE and non Bologna Process institutions 9
