2 Volunteers In Mission Page 2 Page 11 United Methodist Volunteers In Mission Our program exists to enable the participation of Methodists throughout the world in global mission volunteer programs so that affirming, empowering, and trusting relationships are established. This list identifies Volunteer In Mission project opportunities within the boundaries of the North Texas Conference. Our goal is to make a Christian difference in the lives of others and ourselves. Projects do not need to be United Methodist in order to be listed, but must be safe, ethical, and approved by the United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) coordinator for the conference in which it resides. See the back page of this brochure for contact information. Below is an explanation of the codes used on the listings. 4 Volunteers In Mission Page 4 Volunteers In Mission Page 9 AGAPE COMMUNITY CLINIC EAST DALLAS Charles Kemp, FNP, , Charles_Kemp@baylor.edu, located in the basement of the Grace United Methodist Church, 4105 Junius Street, Dallas, TX A church outreach ministry, in cooperation with Baylor Nursing School, that provides health and spiritual care services to the poor in East Dallas on Thursdays thru Saturdays. Need physicians, physician assistants, nurses, translators (Spanish, Vietnamese, and Cambodian), office assistants, social workers, patient advocates, chaplains, and spiritual care persons (ordained or lay). Clinic is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Lodging in churches, motels, and mission house can be arranged. S, A, OA, I. AMIGOS DAYS Rev. Every April teams come for two weekends to repair urban host churches and the exteriors of homes of the elderly or disabled. Some housing is available at Bennett Hall at Tyler Street UMC. WESLEY-RANKIN COMMUNITY CENTER Priscilla Sanchez, Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator, Office: Ext priscilla@wesleyrankin.org, Crossman, Dallas, TX Wesley-Rankin serves a community where persons encounter the challenges of poverty, crime, and despair every day. We bring persons together and invite everyone to use their time and talents to build a stronger community. Wesley-Rankin Community Center encourages education and community fellowship by offering a wide variety of programs for all ages. They offer GED/Parenting classes, computer literacy classes for adults, Elementary and Youth After-School programs, a Senior Citizen Program and much more. This faith-based shelter is located at 2929 Hickory Street and provides help to homeless women, children and men. Over 300 children were helped in The centre is co-located with various health care and counseling, services. Many groups of all ages enjoy providing and serving a meal as well as other opportunities. This is a United Methodist urban ministry based in Oak Cliff which provides after-school and summer programs for underserved children and youth at nine urban churches. They need volunteers to read one-on-one with children children at all sites. They also need volunteers in the summer to provide dinner to 80 college interns who staff the programs and who live in Christian community at SMU. Churches can be involved by co-sponsoring refugee families, mentoring refugees or individuals displaced by hurricane Katrina, and/or through donations of funds or gently used household goods. Helping inner-city churches with VBS and other summer ministries. Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and deed. C2K is located at Bennett Hall, Tyler Street United Methodist Church in Oak Cliff near downtown Dallas. Housing: 40 bunk beds divided between 3 rooms + additional space, with 6 showers, full kitchen. Summertime weekly program includes food, lodging, supplies, and spiritual leadership for $ per person. After the summer program, cost is $15 per person per night for lodging and use of the building.
