The photo on the opposite page shows a panoramic view of the Cassino interconnection on the Rome- Naples High Speed line, during its construction. talferr undertakes the design, technical checking of design, and supervision of construction of new High Speed lines along the main railway lines in taly: Milan-Rome-Naples and Turin-Milan-Venice routes that run respectively from North to South and from West to East of the country, and the link between Milan and Genoa harbour. taly s High Speed/High Capacity system extends over 1,000 km and it has been designed to the most advanced technological standards with speeds of not less than 300 km/h. The new lines carry mixed traffic comprising passenger and freight traffic and are being closely integrated with the conventional railway network. 9

FS was the first in the world to adopt it, and in 2006 received the Best Paper Award from the World Congress on Railway Research. Adopted by the EU as standard for new High Speed networks, Level 2 ERTMS/ETCS eliminates the possibility of human error, ensuring continuous control over the train s movement. This result is the highest degree of safety at the highest speeds, enabling a greater frequency of trains, which may run even only a few minutes apart from one another. The objective of the French and talian states is to use this new link to produce a massive transfer of freight traffic from road to rail. This is all the more important in view of numerous projections which indicate that by the year 2015, the existing road and rail infrastructures will be saturated.
